Madoka Magica
One of those I've been meaning to watch eventually, someone made a trade so that they'll watch reLife and I'll watch this. It's over-the-internet watching though, so I don't think I'll be marathoning it like I do other things
Apparently it's some kind of genre-busting magical girl anime but I don't know much else about it. I'll spam whatever thoughts I have whenever we watch episodes
Anyone else watched or meaning to watch?

Re: Madoka Magica
Watched the first three eps
- The music is probably my favourite thing
- The weapon that the one girl uses in the first few episodes is my other favourite thing
- I like the non-weird art, v. beautiful backgrounds.
- The weird art is just there for me. I recognize that artsy people would probably love it but I'm neutral on it
Episode 3

Episode 3
- Spoiler:
- I knew that something awful happens in this episode that kind of blew people's minds, so I was kind of expecting it. But I was also like "Well, they didn't show Mami's head actually getting chomped so maybe she magic barriered' herse-*body flops down, Witch keeps eating it*o-oh"
- I think kyubei/the cat-bunny thing is maybe actually the evil thing. It might've caused the accident that led to Magical Girling Mami, and he was like subtly pushing Madoka and blue-hair to contract

Re: Madoka Magica
Great little show. Loved it back when it aired. And if you're in after three episodes, the rest should be easy.
I wouldn't really call it "genre-busting," it just has that dark edge constantly running alongside the otherwise cute character designs.

Re: Madoka Magica
See, I actually consider Madoka to be a deconstruction of the magical girl genre, a show where the themes and imagery of the magical girl genre are taken to their logical conclusion and we see the bloody, heartbreaking, soul crushing result. See, something a lot of people don't realize is that there's a ton of fucked up shit in magical girls anime. For example, in Sailor Moon--
But Sailor Moon isn't seen as a dark edgy show because all of that potentially really heavy stuff is swept aside with sparkles and flowers and the magic power of friendship and all that shit and so none of the psychological ramifications of that are every really explored. And I think that's what makes Madoka unique and beloved among many fans, is that it's like "yeah we will go there, let's really look at what would happen to the psyche of a teenage girl if all that trauma and violence and overwhelming power really did suddenly appear in her life. I mean when you think about it, there's just something deeply fucked up about the idea of magical girls, you know? They're basically inhuman child soldiers, forced to constantly fight and lie to everyone around them.
That being said, that's also why I don't like Madoka very much. In feeling like it's a genre deconstruction, an intellectual exercise about what being a magical girl would really be like I feel it often feels sterile and bland, lots of pretty backgrounds and dramatic moments with no heart. I mean it doesn't help that the characters are basically Generic Pink Hair, Generic Pink Hair's Best Friend, A Character Named Sakura Because it Can't Be an Anime Without A Character Named Sakura (well okay she's the most interesting) and Angsty McAngstpants. It's sorta hard to care I felt about these character's suffering and trauma when they're just so boring and generic... Look, I think it's a good quality show that excels in many ways and a much needed deconstruction of the tropes of the magical girls genre, but I just felt like it lacked heart or anything to really bring me into the narrative.
Also, whatever you do, DO NOT watch the final Madoka movie (Madoka: Rebellion). It just shits all over the cannon for no good reason and makes absolutely no sense and not only just doesn't add anything, cheapens the (admittedly very powerful and moving) ending of the anime.
- Spoiler:
- The main character committed suicide in a previous life, which she fully remembers in the present day, and in a later episode kills her lover and then attempts suicide again, plus the whole death of her previous life family and friends and genocide of everyone who lived on her planet. Oh and then all the other sailors kill their lovers from a previous life who had been brainwashed by the enemy. Or something like that.

A thought after Episode 5
- Spoiler:
It' almost halfway through and the titular character isn't a magical girl yet. I'm kind of wondering if Madoka becomes a magical girl at the end and her "wish" is something like "No more magical girls."

Re: Madoka Magica
Ep 6
Ep 7
- Spoiler:
- Creepy cat-bunny turning people into dead robot zombies with soul-gems
- Also some big monstery thing is coming for something, maybe that's why it's trying to trick everyone into being Magical Girls?
Ep 7
- Spoiler:
- Oh noooooooooo Sayaka, figured something bad would come out of using the wish on someone else
- Those Elsa Maria fight visuals though <3

- Spoiler:
- OH SHIT KYUUBEY GOT BULLET HOLED
- Time travel! I was wondering why Homura seemed to care so much about Madoka)
- Magical Girls become Witches! (I was wondering if this was where it was leading, "Elsa Maria" from the previous ep is a Witch name but also a human name)
- Incubator eats Grief Seeds which were cursed/despaired souls of Witches who were former magical girlsssss

Ep 10
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
- Spoiler:
Me while simultaneous watching it with someone (I cut out what they said because I dunno if they want to be in it too)
[01:50] <Madustcrusader> she's done this a ton of times before
[01:50] <Madustcrusader> she's soulless in the eyes because she never wins
[01:51] <Madustcrusader> she can't win with Madoka being a magical girl, so she switched to preventing it
[01:53] <Madustcrusader> more allies
[01:54] <Madustcrusader> "we'll overpower the walpurgissnatchaskfkasjf"
[01:54] <Madustcrusader> bahahaha stealing guns
[01:54] <Madustcrusader> Sayaka's wish never works out
[01:55] <Madustcrusader> she gave up on sayaka because she can never save her
[02:02] <Madustcrusader> maybe changing the nature of Madoka's wish is the way
[02:03] <Madustcrusader> god damn
[02:03] <Madustcrusader> that's bleak
[02:07] <Madustcrusader> maybe the only way is to kill her before she magical girls and just lose
[02:08] <Madustcrusader> cap her and then Kyuubey goes "welp, time to move on I guess"
I caught up to the plot points minutes before they happened and 'ed watching it happen

Re: Madoka Magica
Ep 11
- Spoiler:
- FFFFFFFFFFFFF Homura's gonna have to kill herself or something to undo all the karmic power she keeps putting on Madoka. There was a hint too, in the original timelines they kept dying against the Walpurgisnacht but then in a later on one, Madoka beat it one hit.
- AGHHHHH MADOKA'S GONNA MAGICAL GIRL NOW AGHHHHGGHGGG

Ep 12
;_;
;_;
- Spoiler:
- The clockwork when Madoka took the Walpurgisnacht's grief makes me think it was Homura, from a future timeline when she finally gave up. The grief from a Magical Girl would have to be ridiculously powerful to manifest something like that, and it fits Homura endlessly failing to save Madoka

- Spoiler:
- Prajna:
Don’t cook scrambled eggs in a cast iron pan. Just don’t. It’s never a good idea. Fried eggs sure, it works great with how it conducts the heat, but scrambled eggs just stick like corruption to the Soul Gem of a tormented and possibly insane magical girl
But a steel wool sponge is probably still your best bet
David:
I take it you've finished Maddoka Magica
So I guess I'll cook like Sam I Am
Prajna:
There are MOTHAFUCKING VIKING MAGICAL GIRLS(!!!) and they made the series instead about a bunch of spoiled whiny shitheads with all the personality of a wet mop?!
VIKING MAGICAL GIRLS, I’M TELLING YOU
David:
You mean the ones who came before? That Maddoka wish brought back to life?
Prajna:
Seriously, the five seconds in which we see glimpses of the magical girls of history past told a better story than the entire damn anime and all the movies put together
David:
Really? The whole "humanity can't really do shit unless little girls sell their souls and die for it"?
Prajna:
Give me a series about the Tibetan Magical Girl trying to defend her country from invading Chinese forces, only to give in to despair once the Dalai Lama is captured, or the African medical girl trying to protect her kingdom from slavers and the forces of colonization or HOLY SHIT ANN FRANK WAS A MAGICAL GIRL!!! What about her and her fellow Jewish magical girls fighting against Nazis before perishing in the concentration camps?!
Or, I don’t know, THE GODDAMN VIKING MAGICAL GIRL!!!
Doing whatever badass stuff Viking magical girls do
David:
That could be a hell of a series.
Prajna:
I know, right?
I feel like Madoka as a series focused on literally the most boring magical girls ever in the entire universe when there was so much goddamn potential
JOAN OF ARC BELIEVING KYUBEI TO BE AN ANGEL SENT FROM GOD (and Kyubei not correcting her) AND WISHING TO LEAD THE ARMIES OF FRANCE, BUT NEVER SPECIFYING THAT SHE WANTED TO SURVIVE!!!
David:
And I think that may have been, how do you spell her name, Bronhilda? Who's whole thing was getting saved and then dumped by Seigurd?
Prajna:
Kyubei visiting her in the English prison, reminding her that she just wished to lead the armies and save France, not to survive herself, and watching her increasingly break
David:
Maybe you should write to Gen Urobuchi. He doesn't seem to be doing much these days
Prajna:
Hell I bet Boudica was a magical girl too!
David:
Maybe that was your Viking
Prajna:
So much potential! Native American magical girls on the Trail of Tears! Spartan magical girls fighting off the Persians! Aboriginal magical girls trying to find their way home after being stolen from their families!
David:
You know what? Maybe you should write these. A bleak, supernatural update to the American Girl series
Prajna:
I just wanna watch that clip of goddess Madoka traveling through time and rescuing all the magical girls of the past and try to identify them all
David:
YA still makes mad bank, so publishers might be more willing to take a chance on a new writer
Prajna:
But more importantly ANN FRANK WAS A MAGICAL GIRL!!!
I spent like 30 minutes talking to a friend afterwards wondering what she must have wished for
Did she wish for the war to end? For her family to survive? To not be forgotten?
(Her father did survive, though the rest of her family died)
David:
For a moment, I thought you typed "FRANK MILLER WRITES A MAGICAL GIRL"
David:
That they would all stay together?
Prajna:
No, not even that happened. Her dad survived and headed to America, but her aunts who also survived stayed back in Germany I think?
David:
I'll admit, I've had a similar idea
Prajna:
Fanfic about all the other magical girls that Kyubei hints at throughout time?
David:
Not exactly. Have you ever heard about a show called W. H. I. T. C. H. ?
Prajna:
No, I haven’t. Though I think you’ve mentioned it to me before
David:
It was a silly little western take on the magical girl genre, look up the theme song, it's pretty catchy
Anyway, the story is about a bunch of interracial teenagers who secretly fight invasions from a realm of magical evil.
Prajna:
Okay so at 4:56 you see a girl with green hair surrounded by prayer flags, at 4:58 you see that she’s holding Buddhist prayer beads in her hand opposite her soul gem and at 5:09 when Madoka descends you can see that she’s wearing a simple chuda, the traditional clothing of Tibet
David:
But at one point, it's reveled that their grandmothers were also a team of magical girls
I did some simple (and probably inaccurate) math and realized that their grandmothers would have been teenagers during World War II
Think about that. An interracial team of magical crime fighters, sneaking around after hours, on the American home front during WWll
Prajna:
At 5:35 you see Madoka flying over the African steppes, maybe in Kenya? She approaches a dark-skinned girl in tribal clothing lying under a makeshift tent on a patterned blanket. At 5:57 she seems to be flying through modern day/futuristic London, at 5:59 past tropical islands and at 6:01 past a stretch of volcanos on the ocean
Okay yes, that does sound damn cool.
At 6:03 Madoka appears before a girl with long reddish brown hair who is holding a giant teddy bear in what looks like a futuristic city with lots of spires like a castle? No idea who the fuck that’s supposed to be
At 6:04 she appears before a blond, blue eyed girl on a beach wearing boots and a fur-lined dress, she has a white cape, white decorative wings and a helmet with horns in it. She holds in her hands a broken dagger and beside her are a broken battle-ax and a broken shield. (This is Viking magical girl)
David:
And if the Chinese girl was Japanese instead, and escaped from an internment camp after her brother was killed in the Nisei brigades...
Prajna:
At 6:06 Madoka appears before a purple-haired girl in a purple and white layered dress who is lying on a mountainside, an erupting volcano in the background
David:
Ah, Pompeii
Prajna:
Oooooh, so that’s what that was! Okay, thanks!
It’ll be fun trying to piece these together and find out what they’re supposed to be referencing
At 6:19 a girl in a headscarf and hijab is shown in a partially destroyed building looking over a smoldering bombed out city, crying with a soul gem in her hands
David:
Well... That one's not too hard...
Prajna:
At 6:24 a girl with short brown hair is shown lit from light coming through slats in the boards, while a bunch of others huddle in the darkness. Briefly before she clutches her soul gem you can see a yellow six pointed star pinned to her chest
David:
Ah yes...
Prajna:
At 6:27 a girl in medieval
Japanese clothing is shown inside a giant fire, burning alive
David:
Fires were a big problem in old Edo
Prajna:
At 6:29 there’s another shot of Cleopatra
And at 6:31 another one of Joan of Arc, tied to the stake and about to be set on fire
Aaaaand, that’s all
