Tokyo Ghoul
Apparently this is super popular, so I'm just posting a thread on the off-chance others have seen it or read it. I'm watching the anime right now (though I've heard only the first season and one of the OVAs are fully canon, and Tokyo Ghoul Root A has a few canon things happen in them but it's a completely non-manga related story or a what-if or something) in preparation for the new season (I'm assuming Tokyo Ghoul:re is returning to being an adaptation?). I'm up to Episode 4 of the first season, and I'll probably give the original manga a bit of a read afterwards because people say the anime is a very rushed adaptation.
Warning for those who've had eating disorders or have queasy stomachs when it comes to elements of eating disorders, there's regular content that more or less apes what eating disorders look like.
Tokyo Ghoul is set in Tokyo and is about Ghouls ( ). Ghouls are people who look and act human, but have strange physical properties, the most important of which is that they can only nourish themselves by eating human flesh. They live in hiding, constantly in danger of being discovered by the government and by fellow ghouls looking to protect their feeding grounds from competition. For those who wish to cause no harm, there's the added struggle of living with their hunger pangs, collecting food that doesn't cause them guilt, and hoping they never get discovered while they try to live a regular life.
Wiki lists the genre as "dark fantasy" (I don't see how, it's a modern day setting), "horror" and "thriller", but so far the anime feels more like a grisly horror-themed shonen, sort of like Bleach but with a little more blood.
I sort of think it's good and sort of think it's not good too. I rewatched the first two episodes (I almost never rewatch anything right away) because I think the Ghoul hunger was portrayed really well, I'm sort of grossed out by the eating disorder-esque stuff but it also makes a lot of sense, and even though people say it's rushed I'm sort of waiting for the world to unfold more (both with the government agency and the big-time ghouls that have been referenced so far).

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Fantasy can be in a modern-day setting! I think I'm too squeamish for this show, Attack on Titan is quite enough watching humans get eaten for me for a few years But if it turns out really good later on, rec me again.

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 4
- Spoiler:
- Nice, the Gourmand used to be buddies with Rize, even though she was a binge-ghoul and he seems to have the "refined palette, so he eats the eyes of virgins" thing going for him, just because they both like reading
- I liked the Gourmand's creeper reaction when Kaneki says he'll hang out with him
- Haaaaaa, white-haired dude with a rolling kick, I know they can be used for real but they always remind me of Jushin Liger
- Bartender splashes him with blood to get a look at his one-eye, and then wonders if the "other one eye" is the same as him
- Huh, so half-humans/half-ghouls are super rare but sometimes get born anyways, and they're stronger than actual Ghouls. It makes me wonder if the doctor in the first purposely conducted a transplant on Kaneki to learn how to create artificial half-ghouls
- I was assuming from the first episode that Rize was targeted or that someone killed her on purpose, the beams dropping seemed too coincidental
- Ohhhh, Rize mocked the Gourmand and he sort of hated her because of it.
- And like, he's expressing a strange form of controlled humanity by eating for "taste." The whole "that's kind of gross, oh wait, we do that to animals/livestock in real life."
- Kaneki's interest in Rize is a little weird too, like she tried to kill and eat him and now he keeps trying to connect to her even though she's either dead or a figment of his imagination
- Sniffing a napkin with Kaneki's blood all over it, holy shit
- Welcome to my evil gameshow lair?
- Ah, the Gourmand Club, I guess they toy with people and then eat them?
- "Cannibalism doesn't quite appeal to me."
- And now everyone's freaked out that he's a one-eyed Ghoul
- OH MAN THE WAY HE RIPS AND BURSTS THROUGH TARO
- AND HIS SUIT TURNS RED FROM THE BLOOD RAIN, IS THAT WHY HIS SUIT WAS RED WHEN HE WAS INTRO'D

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 5
- Spoiler:
- Annnd he's alive somehow!
- Touka's sick because she's holding down her friend's food
- Oh, so the Gourmand let him go?
- And her friend thinks she's dating Kaneki, RIP bro
- The dramatic napkin sniffing, god fucking dammit
- Ghouls cannibalizing other ghouls, so it can be done and the people from the Gourmet Club just don't like the taste?
- Saving shitty guy who almost ate Hide, maybe shoulda just left him
- Oh yikes, he's got a human girlfriend. Won't he go crazy and eat her eventually?
- "A rose and a note? There's only one person who would do this..." Cornyyy
- Playing the organ in a church, clicheeeeeeeeeeeeeee
- He wants to eat Kaneki while Kaneki is eating her
- So I guess the other people don't hang around the cafe so Kaneki didn't think to go get them?
- And as soon as I think that, Touka- cuts the Gourmand's face
- Touka's weakened herself by eating her human friend's food
- Punches Kaneki in the guts, takes a small taste of his blood and freaks the fuck out like he's tasted the most delicious thing ever
- Fuuuck, Nishiki and his sister grew up poor and she taught him to eat homeless people
- I thought that was Kimi at first.
- She let him eat a chunk of her shoulder, wtf
- Oh, because she lost her family the day she met him and she probably would've killed herself anyways (or I'm reading between the lines on that)
- "I have an idea." Is Kaneki gonna let Touka eat part of him to power her up?
- YUP

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 6
- Spoiler:
- I smirked when The Gourmand called Nishiki a "zombie."
- Grossssss, Touka took his arm but also took part of his head off
- Oh right, Touka threatens to kill any humans who know about Ghouls
- Just call Touka beautiful and she's out
- Not only out of the fight, but holed up in her room forever
- Hrm, so the girl's father makes those medical instruments that this guy who I'm assuming is Jason wanted to use on Rize back in the first ep
- Welp, "dangerous business" just as the guy says "since when are you working for the humans"
- Ohhh, so the briefcases give the government agents artificial Ghoul powers
- Welp, her dad's callously deaded by the Doves
- Wuh oh, the CCG saw the Mom and daughter
- Ohhhh noooo, they turned the Dad into one of the briefcase powers, didn't they
- Welp, RIP Mom, probably

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 7
Episode 8
- Spoiler:
- Yep, they turned the Father's ghoul thing into a briefcase weapon
- Wow Kaneki, you took her back to see her mom get beheaded :nono:
- Relocating Hinami to the 24th Ward but apparently 24 sucks?
- Ya know, if you guys want to make sure Touka doesn't take revenge, maybe one of you should go after her
- Oh, she only ran to her room
- Huh, they're looking for Jason and "organized movements." Some kind of Ghoul army or mafia?
- Ha, the only other S-Rated Ghouls are The Gourmet/Gourmand (dead) and Rize (dead), right on Ward 20
- Oh boy, Touka's stalking them and hopefully will kill the shit out of them
- "The passionate ones are always the first ones to die." Damnnnn, Anti-Ghoul academy life is rough
- OH FUCK TOUKA JUST KILLED THAT FUCKER
- Oh wait, is that not Touka behind the mask?
- Those are Touka's angel wings
- Yep, Touka with faked mask-hair
- Rough, if a Ghoul attacks the CCG then they're not getting help from the Waiter Nerds
- 11th Ward action incoming
- Bags under his eyes, the other guy hasn't been able to sleep
- I like the contrast of Amon with his eye injury and Kaneki with his new BDSM mask both thinking the same thing. Very "I AM JUSTICE" from Death Note
Episode 8
- Spoiler:
- Hinami drawing bloody pictures now, welp
- Is Hinami going hunting because she hates people now?
- What the fuck, bad guys, leaving Hinami's bagged remains for her to find?
- Kaneki letting the bad guys know they suck too
- You're not really stopping him there, Kaneki
- Probably bite him in the ankle, Kaneki
- OH SHIT HE DID BITE AMON
- Obsessive mantras for CCG guys, "Even if it costs you arms and legs, got at'em"
- "What's gone is my right hand" He's just casually realizing he lost a hand
- Ohhhhh dear, Ghouls can combine their powers into their children the same way you can with Pokemon o.o
- Bruuuuutal, Mado's gonna get fucked up
- MAN. Kaneki so badly doesn't want to be a murderer that he tells Amon to run, but Touka tells Hinami to kill the shit out of Mado
- Touka had no problem killing the shit out of him (though I imagine having amptuation stumps being exposed to sewage wasn't going to work wonders for his immune system)
- Mado was after the one-eyed ghoul
- God damn Rize takes him over, and then he stabs white-haired guy
- Touka got upset at seeing Mado wearing a wedding ring?
- And they make Amon's scream of grief at finding Mado seem as inhuman as when Kaneki had Rize controlling him

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 9
- Spoiler:
- White guy going "Ha, the new guys are NERDDDDSSSS" about Amon
- I really hope the old lady is Applehead
- Ohhh, I'm betting Mado set Amon up with Applehead just to prove a point
- He surely did
- Shit's going down in Ward 11
- D'awww, big tough stoic white-haired guy holds Hinami's hand when she passes by the alleyway
- Legend of the Devil Ape wtf x)
- "Hey, why don't you go to the place where shit's going down to find info about the psycho binge-eater who can take over your body? "
- Hrm 11th Ward getting more CCG, 20th probably getting more CCG after Mado and the other guy got taken down, welp
- Hide already knows Kaneki's a ghoul, so I wonder why he's pretending not to to worry Kaneki so much
- And he's nerding over a book
- D'awwww, an adorable new nervous kohai
- Amon being moved to the 11th Ward, major shit is going down so can Kaneki please go that way because I want to see it <_<
- Ohohooooooo, a ghoul group fighting the CCG together, Jason-led maybe?
- Touka flashback, yikes she had a full family
- OH SHIT, HIDE JUST BUMPED INTO JASON
- OH WHOA, TOUKA'S BROTHER IS AN 11TH WARDER
- Everyone wants Rize, rumble in the 20th incoming

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 10
- Spoiler:
- Oh yikes, Ghouls messed up a CCG base
- Wuh-oh, the One-Eyed Ghoul is the leader of Aogiri Tree
- "NANIIIII?" And then the next scene he has a cup of coffee
- Fucking Banjo-Kazooie here is worried that Kaneki is nailing Rize
- Oh shit, so Aogiri Tree fucks up the CCG in a ward, gets the CCG to close in and wipe out the other ghouls, and then moves in?
- Ha, Touka's no-longer-wimpy little brother shows up
- And here comes fucking Jason, jesus christ, let's just have a giant fight please
- 200 members of Aogiri Tree o.o
- Wait, that weirdo pickpocket wasn't a ghoul?
- Everyone suddenly going "Whoops, a one-eyed ghoul"
- Ayako has full angel wings, Touka's only got half
- Jesus, Yamamori/Jason can't "break him at all"
- Oh boy, is old-man gonna go get Kaneki back?
- Amon knew a ghoul who ate his parents I'm assuming
- That the new kid is fucking crazy, hanging off of the roof of a building
- Of course, the fucking Gourmand is still alive wtf

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 11
- Spoiler:
- The Gourmand ate himself to recover
- Huh, Jason painted Kaneki's nails for him
- Five hundred ghouls, word spread fast that Aogiri Tree kicked the shit out of the CCG
- 500 ghouls vs 1000 NINGEN, that's cool as fuck
- Why is Kaneki counting, I don't understand the torture
- Huh, so they imprison ghouls instead of killing them?
- Oh cool, Jason was tortured into being sadistic
- Angry boss immediately head-shots a few ghouls
- Why did Angry Boss bring his motorcycle to this
- Fucking cool, a briefcase power that's a gun
- Oh boy, Old Man is gonna do something
- And Amon, white-hair and the Gourmand are all fighting tough enemies
- "How do you win, Amon-kun?" Me: "CHEAT"
- Nice, he sucked in the Bin Brothers with a sword that splits
- ONE EYED OWL
- "Take only men who are willing to die with you." God damn

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Episode 12
Huh.
So it was sort of like early Bleach and Ajin combined together, and fast-paced like a more modern shonen anime is (like My Hero Academia), but not as good as any of them. The talent for world/situation building was there. I think it will be worth checking out the manga. I'll probs just leave the Root A and OVA opinions instead of going through each episode, though.
- Spoiler:
- I dunno, those signs of torture are things that would show up after weeks, the anime made it feel like Kaneki was gone for maybe a day
- The counting was to maintain sanity? I dunno, I don't totally buy it
- Though, doing it repeatedly to make him realize he's a monster does make a degree of sense, but then it makes a human originally doing it to Jason not make sense
- Sounds like the Dr Kano or whatever turned Kaneki on purpose
- Uhhhh, can we go back to the super cool war stuff?
- Congratulations, you went crazy from torture and became the villain?
- Hrmmm, that sort of grew on me as it went on, and then with him devouring Jason at the end, but at the same time it was like... all that rushed build-up for that?

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Just finished the mostly non-canon Tokyo Ghoul: Root A
Was still kinda cool. I appreciated the sound effects (maybe the best part), the slightly slower pace and character development of characters who are apparently still part of the regular canon. Some shit was done really well (there's a walking scene in the last episode that was really good, and a reveal of a certain character was awesome and caught me off guard, can't believe I didn't think of that).
It was a little bit Bleach, a little bit Ajin (actually it predates Ajin by a little bit, so it's probably more that Ajin is a little bit Tokyo Ghoul), got the faster pace of a Boku no Hero Academia, but not as good as any of them.
I think the thing that stands out the most to me about both Tokyo Ghoul seasons was that it had a ton of potential and one day they'll probably make a new version that properly adapts everything and gives the right pacing. Apparently the first 12 episodes stuffed about 80ish chapters worth of content in it and you could really tell when certain points were allowed to breathe and other points were rushed through.
I just read the first chapter and it's definitely something I want to continue reading. Even with the anime taking more care with the first episode/first few chapters, the manga is slowed down, doesn't rush and adds more flavour to the proceedings (just as an example, the anime never mentions that Kaneki's favourite author is a horror writer).

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
I've started reading the manga since the announcement of a second season of :re and that :re itself is ending soon (if it hasn't already). I do about a volume per day, 14 volumes of the original manga all together before I'll start watching :re, but probably won't do it every day.
The attention to detail is a lot better in the manga like in Volume 1 when
Currently going through Volume 2

Volume 2
- Spoiler:
- Their lives feel more desperate in the manga than the anime
- Hinami-chan's journal about her mom teaching her how to eat human food
- Holy shit, Uta-san catching Touka lifting up Kaneki's shirt

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Volume 4 added some extra context and lower-key moments that really helped flesh out (pun intended) the setting and characters more. Or it was in the anime and I forgot about, that's possible too
- Spoiler:
- Hide amateur-investigating Ghouls and Ghoul activity and correctly figuring out the circumstances of Mado's death. I'm somewhat wondering if he becomes an Investigator rather than what happened in Root A
- The Gourmet is a lot more awful in the manga and doesn't have the same sense of passionate fun (that scene with the woman having her eyes plucked out after a home invasion, fuckkkk)
- I forget if it was mentioned that Yomo and the mask-maker were originally enemies in the old days.

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Volume 5
- Spoiler:
- The transition between the Gourmet's restaurant and the Church is still awkward in the manga, I was wondering with the anime if they had just rushed ahead or something, but nope, it was more or less adapted correctly
- I think The Gourmet was just all around better in the anime. They went wildly passionate and over-the-top with him in the anime and it really added to it
- The Nishiki stuff was actually more emotional in the manga than I remember the anime being
- Telling all these investigators apart was difficult in the anime but now it's probably gonna be harder with the manga

Re: Tokyo Ghoul
Volume 6
- Spoiler:
- Ohey, Banjou showing up has more meaning with the side-chapter explaining who he was from the last volume
- I really find the similarities between Aogiri Tree and CCG interesting. Aogiri Tree is exerting their power as the top of the food chain to be above humans, CCG has regulations that are there to require them to act like a human but both of them are basically doing the same things to each other at the end of it, cold-hearted brutality
- Also the science behind ghouls and why they need to eat
- I don't remember the anime going into depth about the different Kagune types either, that makes it much more nerdier-shonen (or maybe it just went by too quick and I didn't retain it)
- I don't remember Tatara at all from the anime
- I wonder if the One-Eyed King is the Kanou Doctor. Used Kaneki as a guinea pig to see if it would work and then transplanted the rest of Rize into himself? But Tatara sounded like he was looking to use the rest of Rize
- Actually I just don't remember any of this stuff with Aogiri Tree being in the anime in general. "Food" processing, basically keeping Banjou and the gang as labour-slaves etc
- Ughhhh, Jason emerging having killed some of the escapees, and the isolating the other ones after Kaneki agrees to leave
