In the last few weeks my friend Gemma has introduced me to a few of her friends. One of them (let's call her Linda) has recently told me, after we had a long and fun discussion, that she'd like to go on a date with me. I'm flattered, and I like her, but I'm not sure about how I feel about her. On one hand I'm really glad that Linda finds me attractive enough to ask me out, and like I said I like her, but on the other hand I'm not sure whether I'm attracted to her. I wouldn't mind going on a date and just seeing how it goes, so I said yes, but I don't want to hurt her if I figure out that I'm not attracted to her and I prefer just being friends.

It's all so confusing. This has never happened to me before, and I'm afraid of doing something wrong and making her feel bad. She definitely doesn't deserve it, she's a very sweet woman. I also think that I've probably been too picky in the past and I wonder if maybe by giving things time to grow instead of expecting great chemistry and a "spark" from the start.

I already said yes to the date so I will meet her, and I will try to make it into a fun night for both of us. What should I do if I find out that I'm not interested in her in a romantic way?

I think the purpose of a first date is to learn how you feel about someone and many times people learn that they are not attracted or there is no chemistry. Linda may even end up deciding she is not interested, despite initial attraction. If you are not attracted, just tell her there is no chemistry for you if she wants to take the relationship in directions you do not want
