Summer Anime Chart 2016

Post by bomaye on Sat Jun 11, 2016 8:57 pm

Gomenesai. Watashi wa Ken-sama Listen up, nerds! We've got about 3-4ish weeks until the Summer anime season starts! Instead of just springing shit on people randomly, I thought I'd just link to the Summer 2016 chart so anyone who's got any interest in anything can sound off if they're gonna watch something, or perhaps just go "Hey, that might be cool, let me know after a few episodes if it's any good!" A lot of these have promotional videos that come along with them so you can check out the style.

Most of these will be up on Crunchyroll and I imagine some will hit the other random places (Netflix, Amazon Prime) that anime comes out on. Also, it's the internet, so if you want to find it you can always look at the "other" places where you can find horrible substitutes or give someone an anime kiss.

[Also Werel, the new Berserk TV series says it's a sequel to the 1997 series, you're welcome]

So what catches your eye?

Personal List:

Slam-dunks:

- Mob Psycho 100: The guy who did One Punch Man did this too. It's about a kid who no one really notices if but when his emotions overflow his psychic power explodes and is super dangerous or something.
- Orange: "Everyone has regrets in life." A shy high school girl receives a letter from herself from 10 years in the future telling her to keep a close eye on the new transfer student because something tragic happens to him.

Just make me sit up straight and pay attention, why don't you?

- reLife: A 27-year old dude whose life sucks gets recruited to take part in an experiment: take a pill that turns him back into a 17 year old and lets him relive one year of high school.

I know a guy (this isn't a euphemism for me, I actually know a guy) whose dream is basically this. This could be awesome and horrifying at the same time.

Mechaaaaaa aka  Slam Dunks but just because I like giant robots:

Regalia: Three Sacred Stars: MECHAAAAAA (Content blocked warning on the video, that can't be good Neutral)
Majestic Hour MECHAAAAAAAA I didn't watch whatever this is the first time around
Active Raid: MECHAAAAAAAAA I did watch the first season and it was just okay but near the end when it changed to hacker stuff it got a lot better

Sequels to Things I haven't watched yet but will sometime in the future I think

Berserk and both Danganrompa's (I may make the next watch after JoJo the first Danganrompa season just because I doubt I'll play the Vita game)

Probably give these a try

91 Days: Prohibition Era Mafia shit, eh? I'm not sure the animation style will work out for it (after watching Joker Game, I want any kind of serious anime from pre-1940s to look like that), but I'm willing to check it out based on the premise.
Fukigen na Monokean: There was a series called Mokke that was kind of based around solving the problems of spirits that got me pretty good back in the day. I will give this one a cursory try but it doesn't really look like my jam
Handa-kun: A comedy about a kid that everyone likes but he thinks everyone is bullying him. Might be hilarious
Tales of Zestiria The X: Based off the anime-ist of JRPG series, I'll give it a try
New Game!: I dunno about this one. Maybe if it's peppered with game lingo to laugh at or something
Saiki Kusou etc etc etc: A normal high school boy has psychic powers but having psychic powers in high school sucks. Could be funny
Servamp Lame anime vampire shit buuuut tbh Vampires are an a genre I haven't hit up enough so mebs Uh-oh [sh-shut up, Werel]
Taboo Tattoo Martial arts supernatural tattoo conspiracy shit. The only way I stick with this is if there's like Bruce Lee stuff in it, tbh
Time Travel Shojo: There's no description so I'll probably just have to watch an ep to see if there's anything to it
Onara Gouro: An anime short about sentient fart or something.

Gonna hit up some of the OVAs of the shows I watched too

Movie-wise, might try to watch Kimi no Na Wa,  FF XV, Koe no Katchi, Under the Dog, and Planetarian (I think Planetarian has OVAs too?] and I do want to watch Persona but I'm behind on it and probs will end up seeing One Piece anyways because the manga-ka wrote it. I'm not going to watch the third Ajin movie because they're gonna just chop it up and that will be the second season in the Fall (and maybe they'll have to add to it because the last season was the last two movies chopped up)

Also I'm already watching Kuromukuro, they don't list Dragon Ball Super but it's continuing, I'm catching up on the previous season of JoJo so I should catch up to this at some point, and Macross Delta will keep going I think.

Hey, great thread!
I don't know if the anime will be any good, but I read the Mob Psycho 100 manga and it's hilarious, so I'm looking forward to the adaptation! The crude artstyle really added to it, so I hope it doesn't get the One Man Punch treatment. It had a slight black humour undercurrent that I thought was a bit cruel, though, particularly because the main character isn't having the best childhood probably and isn't too aware of what is going on around him.

Here's a better synopsis: con artist that pretends to be a psychic meets actually psychic kid and uses him for his own purposes, hilarity ensues. Said psychic kid also gets into some pretty weird situations on his own, involving bizarre Happy Happy cultists and various strange stuff with a vague social satire tone.

I'm also looking forward to Orange since a really good friend of mine is a fan of the manga and I love the art style :>

I usually find the descriptions too dry to really draw me into them, so I usually check out the list and then just wait to see which of the ones I was interested in land up getting good buzz (if I haven't forgotten by then, I land up actually watching very little Wink ). And I probably can't keep up with more than one thing at a time anyway.

Yes!
Orange: I'm a sucker for anything in the melancholy, introspective time travel/communications from past or future/selves from different time periods/universes vein.  It sounds like this one's going to be our next Boku Dake.
Persona: Because it's going to be aaaaages till I get to play the game Sad
ReLife: Oh god what a horrifying concept, kind of have to see that. But OTOH, some of the the character designs were uuuuuuugly and seemed like they're just trying to hit all the 'character type' checkboxes in the video (but I've seen images where it all looked perfectly fine, so I dunno). Just hoping it doesn't involve any romance plots with actual teenagers.

Interested:
Berserk: been curious about the series for a while but it's just toooooo big at this point, so I'm wondering if this would be an accessible jump-in point. Werel, any guidance?
Mob psycho 100: Looks funny, the bad art style is weirdly charming. But I have a hard time getting around to comedies.
Qualidea code: If it's any good at all, this could be exactly my kind of fantasy/action team show.
Kuromukuro: This looked more fun than I'd expected.
Re:Zero...:The rewinding time could make for a cool twist in a high fantasy series, and it looks very anime, in a good way (which I'm finding rare these days).

Somewhat curious:
Fukigen no mononokean: Seems unlikely to be original or deep, but there's something engagingly cute about it from the preview video.
Rewrite: I'd been quite interested from the description, but the preview shows nothing at all of the setting and gives me the impression of an overly cutesy harem show in thin disguise. Unless I hear otherwise, I'm not going to bother.
Saiki Kusuo...: Not enough information to say, but if it's good it could be fun.
Taboo Tattoo: Fantasy/fighting/conspiracy, could be cool, could be totally meh.
Time Travel Shoujo: Well, we know there's time travel, we know it's shoujo, we know there's scientists in the title for some reason?! That's about all we know.  Shrug
Tales of Zestiria: Scenery porn is a plus, the character designs are a minus. Hair with zigzags is just too anime for me. Never played any of the Tales of games.
Regalia: three sacred stars: Neither the description nor the preview gave me enough to say. I'm guessing it's probably not going to be very good.
Endride: I like these sorts of 'the future is in the grasp of two youths raised in different worlds' stories, but the video left me kind of meh. And wtf is up with that guy's eyebrows!?

WTF:
-sentient months? Suspect  This is taking anthropomorphization wayyyyyy too far.
-banana cat?? confused
-"the most admirable of farts?"  Shocked

This has already been on this season (it's a 26 episode anime I think). It's kind of samurai + mecha + hijinx because a time-tossed samurai from 450 years ago has to get used to like cell phones and girls wearing skirts and things.

I think it is meant to have romance subplots to it or something. Part of why I'm interested in seeing it is how they handle this facet of it. Are they gonna go full creepy anime? Is the 27 year old gonna be kind of wistful because he knows a little more than he would've at 17 but also kind of like "I dunno, this feels kind of wrong." Is he going to revert to his high school self because he never really got this stuff down? There is a lot of ways it could go.

ONE did a little of this in One Punch Man too, I'm actually pretty interested where he goes if this focuses a lot more on it, because he kind of poked at things in a Welcome to the NHK way.

And many of them are ways I have zero interest in seeing Razz  But some other things I've seen about this series make me think it won't be one of them.

YES PLEASE WATCH BERSERK, EVERYONE Shiny/thrilled

For those not familiar: a swordsman in a pseudo-medieval-Europe setting joins up with the charismatic, ambitious young leader of a mercenary band and his right-hand woman. The show follows the merc band's ascendance to greater and greater power, the costs and consequences of that power, and the dawning realization that no matter how big your sword or army, humans are totally weak and useless in the face of malevolent supernatural forces unless you make some kind of Faustian deal. If you are interested in meditations on friendship, hubris, loyalty, demons, violence, choices, and the way Japanese people see Europeans, this show is the business. Also, gore. If you can't stomach heads-flying-off late-90s style bloodbath scenes, maybe skip this one, but I promise that the gore is not the point of the show and it actually does contribute in important ways to the narrative.

I'd definitely recommend starting with the 1997 anime-- it's a pretty manageable size (25 episodes), covers the best, most important, most gut-punching plot arc from the manga, and the pacing/animation/voice acting is way better in the old anime than the new movies (which tbh I couldn't even finish, they bummed me out by being goofy and over-the-top instead of gritty and heartwrenching). Also, the soundtrack for the '97 anime is Susumu Hirasawa and is goddamn amazing.

And then we can all watch the new show, which starts where the old anime leaves off, because it's about time y'all hopped on one of my recs. Razz

Wow. Surprised That does sound like a hell of a show. 25 episodes is not a very manageable size for me, though, especially not to get done before the new show starts - but it looks like that only covers about 14 volumes of manga (I can get through manga way more easily than tv), would reading that be an acceptable substitute?

Amaama to Inazuma: Looks adorable.
D.gray-man: I follow the manga and I did watch the first season. Great character designs.
Berserk: Will watch one episode to see if I can stand the 3d.

Enail: Yes. Reading the first season is better than watching the anime. A good pointer on how to know when the first anime ends is when you're reading the manga and you go "HOLY SHIT. FUCK. NOOO. Nonononono..." That's when the first anime ends. I think around volume 12 or 13. The anime skips some content from volumes 1 and 2.

Oh shit, original Berserk is only 25 eps? I had it in my brain for some reason that it was in the 70ish range at least.

I may just do that and Dangan side by side once JoJo's out of the way <_<

Absolutely! The art in the first few volumes of the manga is a little rough, but it gets much better. And yeah, Golden Age arc is done by the end of volume 14 (and it includes Puck the fairy, who is not in the anime, and who you either love or hate), so if that's more manageable you'll be caught up by the time the new show comes out. If you start reading, let me know, I will make the heck out of a thread. Grin

(Totally recommend listening to the OST while you read, though Razz)

edit: ahahaha yeah, Student, as soon as you're like NONONONONONONO then you've reached the end of the arc. rofl

Do the movies go past this Golden Age stuff? I do want to watch them but if they're going to cover what the upcoming anime does I may just leave it until after

The movies cover basically the same stuff as the '97 anime, so I'd just do the anime and skip the movies/tack them on later if you dig the show.

The first time I finished watching the Berserk anime I sat there in silence for about 5 minutes just staring at the wall and crying.

First time two of my friends watched it, the last episode ended, and one of them just got up, left, and went home without a word.

This show wrecks you up to a degree rivalling or exceeding Boku Dake levels. 1000% worth it.

Puck is adorable. His anachronistic popular culture references can get a bit annoying, though.

I also think we can agree that the only show REALLY worth watching is Jojo Smile

Enail: It's definitely worth it, though it will make you rage for a while when getting to those particular parts.

Was it like the super-gross horrible thing? Because I've sort of heard about what that is and someone told me they were once part of an anime club and some Japanese exchange students were like "Oh, how nostalgic" at some of the shows they would watch in there but they ran away crying from something in Berserk and never came back

It's a super-gross horrible thing. Less gross and more horrible/soul-crushing.

I'm flipping through the first few volumes of the manga right now, and am reminded of two important caveats: one, the manga gets a much slower start than the show. The first 3ish volumes of the manga are a flash forward to after the Golden Age arc, whereas in the show I think the futurey stuff is confined to part of the first episode; the first few manga volumes are a little bit "wait wtf is happening, who is this Guts guy anyway." Second, the manga is actually way gorier than the anime, especially at the outset. Don't let it put you off, if possible; I just skim most of the battle scenes cause I don't care how well dude can draw entrails, and there is much more non-bloodbath narrative after the first little bit.

Look, Enail, if wandering through a Hieronymus Bosch painting doesn't sound like a relaxing time, I can't really help you. Normal people decompress by looking at pictures of scary monsters eating peasants, then follow up by having all their feelings and hopes and dreams nuclear-exploded over the course of a 20-minute anime episode. Heartbreak and chill. innocent

I'm a less avid anime watcher than some people on the site, but I will probably check out reLife and Orange, as both those concepts really intrigue me. I might check out an episode or two of Berserk as well. I have mixed reactions to gross and horrible, and have both favorites and things that I absolutely hate that have elements of that sort, so I'd have to try to see if it was the kind of grim stuff I enjoy.

@Enail: Alternatively, you could watch the 3 anime movies of Berserk to mostly catch up on current events.

Personally, reading the manga allows me to direct the events of the story as if it were a movie in my head. If you imagine the story that way, they may end up having a more visceral effect on you.

Reading manga doesn't completely get me to 'movie in my head' - I'm a bit envious in fact, Hermit! - but it can be pretty visceral still. Given Werel's less-than-enthusiastic comments about the movies and that I find it easier to get through manga, I think I'll go with reading in spite of my inferior read-imagining skills Wink

I'm gonna go the anime route, voice acting and colours and bgm gives me things that I can't really get from manga, I only read it with something like Genshiken where you don't know if there's another anime coming. (Speaking of, should probably check if there's another Genshiken chapter out)
