S2E4/16:

-Aww, Guts teaching Isidoro to fight
-Wow, and I thought Farnese was useless last season Suspect She can't even keep a watch on Casca! Hopefully she'll get some skill development in there with her character development before I want to murder her too much.
-Serpico drops his bucket at Farnese apologizing Laughing / :/
-Isidoro could probably learn more swordfighting from Serpico than Guts at this point.
-"To be completely honest, I'd like you to die" HOLY SHIT, SERPICO
-Still making himself bound to Farnese's will, while knowing she was capable of changing and trying to be a decent human being, but not for him.
-cool-looking troll!
-oh god, another fairy, I don't think I can stand two of them
-a cutesy witch still really doesn't feel right for this show to me
-Really? We're getting into comedy groping and turning people into monkeys? Facepalm
-It's quite touching how much Guts is putting himself into being a good mentor for Isidoro
-Nice house!
-Come on, Guts, those things are way too cute to serve the apostles

e16:
-Laughing Guts’ casual takedown of Isidoro
-Only Farnese would say “Casca-san” to a catatonic in a sack dress
-And only Farnese could manage to lose her and then herself. USELESS
-Yep, Enail, Laughing / :/ is exactly the emoji for Serpico dropping the basket when she apologizes
-NB: In the translated manga the speech bubble for those sheep goes “BEGGH” which I believe should always be the canonical transcription of sheep noises
-Two birds one stone I see what you did theerrrrrrr Disapproving
-Damn, good job Isidoro, sneak attack got Serpico to open his eyes
-I was just thinking “it is pretty sweet how he’s training Isidoro” and then Serpico has to go and embarrass him by SAYING it
-“To be completely honest, I’d like you to die.” Shiny/thrilled
-Well here’s Schierke
-I do agree that Schierke and Flora don’t really match the tone, and overt human-controlled magic doesn’t really fit the world too well. But oh well, you takes what you gets in post-Golden Age Berserk
-Ivalera’s voice is really annoying. ._.
-“Coming from you, it just makes me all itchy.” Laughing
-Oh man, finally at Flora’s house, WHICH MEANS… Shiny/thrilled
-The elementals are super cute, but if Sonia can serve the apostles so can they Razz

Berserk 17

Spoiler:

-Aight, intros grown on me
- I love this mystical flute background music
- Oooo, a ward to protect against the Mad Dog?
- "A friend from the Spirit Realm." Skull Knight?
- "Realm of Ideas" eh? So did the Big Egg/Behelit Apostle from the first half of Season 2 change the big idea? I remember something about the "Idea of Evil" that I was supposed to skip so I did.
- Hrmmm, so if this is loosely based on Europe, these witches are pagan Druids?
- Dat Casca booty
- "Show me how I can use it so I can KILL THEM ALL"
- So, the Behelit is kind of a powerful spiritual being decides to meddle with fate and force something to happen. Kono Sekai ni wa.
- Betty the Behelit
- Further mysteries of the GodHand and the five angels who used to be Human
- Magic equipment upgrade
- Puck thought he was a chestnut x)
- Greatttt, give Serpico a weapon that can cut without needing the strike. RIP Guts
- "Hey Guts, here's a puny axe." Yeah, like that was gonna fly x)
- Something freaky in Guts sword
- Witch-girl apparently really wants to fly through the sky x)
- HEY THAT SHADOW
- That looked like the big-wig Angel of the GodHand.
- Or maybe not. That's not the Skull Knight either, is it?

S2E5/17:

-She can stop the brand from possessing him? Does that mean a leash on the mad dog?
-Casca takes the plum while the elves are fighting Laughing
-Getting a pretty different view of the spiritual stuff here
-It's super-unsettling to hear the apparently good-magic witch talking about the godhand as angels.
-hotsprings episode!
-boobs bouncing randomly without the application of physics whyyyy
-Also, Casca's totally lost her muscles  :/
-Witch has got Guts' number pretty well
-The beheilit is now 'Betty?!' That's not a bad summary of how this series has changed Uh-oh
-"I have to punch them in the face someday" Shiny/thrilled
-"An enormous flow of od," huh? Really hope that's not a euphemism Uh-oh
-I'm assuming the truth the witch is talking about is the truth that the sheer power of needing to punch Griffith in the face is a force beyond even the highest powers.
-Even if it feels kind of too videogame/LOTR for Berserk, I always love a 'getting magical gifts specially matched to each person' scene. I was really hoping Casca would get a sword, and start remembering herself after that one scene where she killed those criminals, though  :/  And that's also quite a burn to Farnese that she's so useless she only gets defensive gear too.
-Of course Guts rejects his present Laughing It's not like he hasn't taken unfamiliar weapons before, though, he should really just hold onto it for just in case Disapproving
-Casca imitating the golem rofl
-SKULL KNIGHT IS HELPING!  Wait, why do you say it isn't Skull Knight, Bomaye??

This season's gotten a better handle on how to balance the lighter stuff with the dark goal/backstory, the feel is sort of like it's a lightheated videogame quest, but where the goal of the quest is to keep up the thin walls holding back the darker story so as to travel through it and see it through while keeping the lighter story from being swallowed up by it.

The intro's growing on me too, and I'm starting to actively like the ending song.

-New intro's growing on me too.
-Big-girl pants time for Schierke
-"It should last for the duration of your journey." Flora, they've been on that journey since 1997, don't overestimate your abilities
-Friend in the spirit realm Wink wink nudge nudg
-Of course there's a trinity of realms in the fake European world. What other number could it be.
-Casca settles the chestnut fight Laughing
-"No prob" is "nopuro" rofl Oh Japanese
-Oh man I'd forgotten there were supposed to be living humans in Elfhelm
-Massive spiritual entities exist there, like Femto's wing and the White Hawk's wing.
-"The world cannot be defined by materialism." Crown
-Iiii think the journey's damaged more than Casca's hair, but her butt seems to be doing fine
-Uugghhh weird/gross seeing the Behelit animated with that fleshy-clay texture
-I much prefer the unknown entity that animates the Godhand to remain unknown at this point.
-"I guess. I have to punch them in the face someday." There's that idiot Guts we all love
-Time for Serpico to literally be an intangible breeze.
-No, not a chestnut Laughing
-Pffft who needs a dumb axe when you've got the DRAGONSLAYER
-Yeah, sorry Farnese, you don't get a kink-elemental flagellator
-If their physical bodies readjusted to their ideal spiritual forms, shouldn't Isidoro be like 6'5" and ripped, cause I'm pretty sure that's how he sees himself
-So much metaphysical canon exposition in this episoooode
-The golem imitating Casca Heart
-(Yes, the old friend is Skull Knight)
-Next week: 22 minutes of troll fighting, 1 minute of plot.

bomaye wrote:RIP Guts
Laughing Not till Farnese decides she's done learning how to light torches in the darkness.

And that's a really good way of describing the tone of the series at this point, Enail. The lightheartedness feels pretty flimsy, even artificial, most of the time.

Spoiler:

I totes didn't recognize the Skull Knight <_<

So this part was like... maybe it didn't feel Berserk like, but it feels important because of that. So far all we've seen in Berserk is "bad guys and demons and evil always win, you will always lose out to your fate, and the only way to survive is to scratch and claw and scrape for even a second's worth of reprieve.

And then we have this peaceful, spiritually strong glade with an old woman who's lived half-past forever pointing out that fate pushed Guts, and Guts pushed back. And even though Gods and Transcendental Beings might be able to manipulate the fates of mere mortals, they can't set them in stone, so Schierke, take heart, GUTS IS GOING TO KILL THEM ALL.

Yes, definitely the first sign of hope in this universe. I'll be interested to see what happens when this view hits the bleaker side of things. It's hard to envision peaceful nature magic kicking ass against Femto without something shifting pretty heavily in the story.

For some reason, Flora and the spirit tree make the universe way more painful for me. It's almost like, without them, you know exactly what to expect from this world: unrelenting pain where, yep, you claw and scrape for a second's reprieve. It's miserable and hopeless, but it's so miserable and hopeless that it's only a matter of Guts/anyone else resigning himself to it and living without expectation of rest or comfort.

With Flora, now there's a fight to be had beyond just KILL THEM ALL. Now there's a macro-scale struggle to keep the spirit realm in its place and defy certain threads of fate, and means/knowledge to do so, and people who have been doing it for a long time. Now it feels like there's more to be lost than Casca: there's this entire hidden world of serenity and wisdom and hope. It's like resting by the Band of the Hawk campfire on a huge metaphysical scale, and you know how that turns out.

Buuuuuuuuut you're right, the message that fate isn't inviolable and that some fish break the surface of the water is at its core a hopeful one, even if entertaining an iota of hope in the Berserk universe feels like shoving needles in your eyes Shiny/thrilled

S2E6/18:

-Guts respectfully talking about religion to convince the priest to let them stay?! I feel like that really shows how helpless and desperate he feels to keep Casca safe even more than how fine he was with Farnese and Serpico joining them, he's willing to do all kinds of things I couldn't see him doing early last season.
-Isidoro's going to spend half the season as a monkey, isn't he Laughing
-Aww, Isidoro tsundere-ing that he doesn't look up to Guts
-M-maybe Shierke will be able to talk to Casca with the telepathy?
-Serpico thinking how ironic that he gets the air spirits who go where they please unbound Sad
-Niiiiice sword
-Isidoro going for one troll and running away immediately when it's a group Laughing
-Farnese shielding Casca  Happy tears
-It's interesting that Serpico can take on Guts in the right circumstances, but is relatively helpless against things that Guts can handle easily. His skills are very much based on handling humans.
-Farnese seeing herself in the dogmatic priest
-I got a little stab to the heart from how much Casca would hate being filed under "protect the women."
-Fuuuuck that cape is cool
-Farnese remembers she has a blade, about time.
-The old guy taking the hit to protect Isidoro Sad
-Damn, that magic is way more powerful than I'd expected

-Yeah, Guts being willing to throw Casca on pilgrim privileges… wonder how that’d sit with her in better times
-I wonder if this episode will include the troll sequence in the credits.
-“What is wrong with him?” Has Farnese never met a teenage boy?
-Scrawny lil Isidoro doing his Guts moves/Guts face Laughing
-I really do sort of like the introduction of the Holy See as a secondary enemy that’s also underlyingly rotten and evil but also on its surface a savior to the people.
-Doing something you don’t want to just because you’re told to is not how you become Griffith’s true friend, Schierke.
-DON’T TIE HAIR ON CASCA’S FINGER YOU DON’T WANT THEM UNFILTERED MIND IMAGES
-“Bound by nothing, they go where they wish. How ironic. I am so unlike them.”
-“We aren’t safe here, like 300 feet above the trolls! Run to lower ground!”
-The CG church roof looks pretty awkward next to everybody else animated normally
-Did that priest just slap Ivalera? He can see her? His faith is weeeeeak
-Trolls hanging off the Holy See emblem rules
-God, yeah, Enail, Casca would murder everyone for being part of “protect the women”
-But he was so shitty to you, Morgan Crying
-That earth king looked pretty cooooool
-New Berserk feels so much like a straight up D&D campaign sometimes that it makes me long for the good ol’ three-main-characters-plus-regulars narrative that was the Golden Age.

Spoiler:

- "You cannot handle those demonic beats." DOHOHOHOHOOHOOO
- "We're in your debt." "HOLY SHIT GUYS THAT SWORD"
- "Fight For Survival Against The Demonic Legion." There's something about some of these episode names, man
- Haaa, Police Puck makes no sense but I dig it anyways
- Dohohoohoooo, Isidoro admires Guts but won't admit it
- "With the passage of time, my memory has grown fuzzy. Did any of that really happen?" Ya know, there's been a few times where I've thought back to people I used to know who I never did see on facebook or anything like that wonder to myself "were those real people?" silent
- "Doing something you don't want to just because you're told to, is weak." YEAH, GUTS, TELL SHIERKE THAT "FUCK THE NORMIES" IS OKAY
- "This one's mine!" *horde appears* rofl rofl rofl
- Oh shit, Farnese or Casca froze the trolls
- KILL THEM ALL GUTS
- "REV, HOLY FUCKING SHIT, DID YOU SEE THAT GUY"
- Farnese dealing with someone she used to be like
- Morgan-san :_;
- Magicccccc
- Huh, the preview makes it sound like the magic backfires. "100 consecutive kills" x)

S2E19

Spoiler:

- "No matter how it's express, the sun is the sun, and light is light." Sun
- "The name of God is God's alone. It's not for humans do decide."
- Guts approves of your heresy, Schierke
- An ogre? Wtf? x)
- Casca said "ogre" silent
- "Sorry Guts, you're gonna have to kill it"
- Guts: You need time to cast a spell. No worries, I got this.
- Everyone Else: WHAT THE FUCK AM I SEEING
- Kelpie, is this supposed to be scary, because it's adorable rofl
- Like, Casca will just randomly hop on its back and it becomes her new steed
- Serpico's getting a little too good at controlling Sylphs, eh?
- "They're stronger than the usual ones." "What the FUCK do you consider "the usual ones"?"
- Even Guts is all like "God damn, this magic shit..."
- Of course Guts has to cut its head off rofl
- The way of magic is to never become one with power. So the demons and the Behelit are evil because they trick or cajole people into becoming one with power?
- Hey, nice, the people are actually thrilled as fuck that the demons are gone even though their town got wrecked
- "I'm counting on you Lady Witch" ;_;
- Of course the Trolls got Casca and Farnese
- Rage against the villagers silent
- Serpico gets to be the cavalry later on
- So I like that Guts has such ridiculous brute force that even magic users are like "what the fuck, how is this even human?"

-Hey Schierke, “4 guardian angels” is also what the God Hand was called before Femto happened, so maybe be careful?
-Bahahaha that ogre is so hilarious looking
-CASCA SAID OGRE??
-The trolls nipping at the ogre’s severed hand Laughing
-“The kelpie is a mid-level water spirit.” Yeah just full D&D now.
-The kelpie IS kind of cute. “Frog horse.” rofl
-"I knew he wasn't normal, but..." Yeah I do enjoy Guts being acknowledged as a freak
-“The frog horse is green, and so are my clothes. You take the black ogre. This is how appropriate matchups are signaled in D&D.”
-Such monologuing while fighting, and yet I’m enjoying it
-Poor starstruck Isidoro.
-Casca’s always falling into rivers innocent
-“You did a great job.” :’)
-Even Schierke’s gotta get on the “control my rage before I destroy everything” train.

S2E19:

-Four guardian angels? Reeeeaaallly hope those aren't going to turn out to be the original four Godhands Uh-oh
-Farnese is upset at the idea that something as powerful as magic could come from or be compatible with the religion she once believed was all-powerful and good, that's a little sad.
-C-casca said "ogre" Shocked
-CROCODILE HORSE! ...Horsodile? Crocorse?
-The whole crowd thinking the ogre will slaughter Guts, and Puck's just like "nah."  Cool
-Serpico steps up.  Must be nice for Guts to have some competent backup for a change, it's been a long time.
-Damn, I love that wind cloak
-Soooo D&D and/or nostalgic old videogames
- "You're an excellent small fry, though" Laughing
-Schierke's voice actor's pretty good, she manages to sound powerful and serious when she needs to
-Guts is actually impressed!
-Is Casca actually trying to re-learn words? It seems like more than she was doing before.
-"Her soul might not be able to return, rendering her an invalid" then it cuts straight to Casca.  silent
-I continue to be impressed at how dedicated Farnese is to protecting Casca, she just went right into the water with her, no hesitation. If only she had the skills to back up the dedication...
-Poor Serpico, trying to keep up with Guts is not good for the health
-Guts being all gentle and encouraging with Schierke instead of throttling her and screaming FIND CASCAAAAA  Heart  We're getting a lot of little moments to quietly show his character development
-Schierke is impressively good at turning things back to the Reverend and helping him save face/faith, that was super-smooth and classy
-Poor Isidoro, it's a tough crowd to try and keep up with
-Isidoro gets a sword the right size cheers
-Serpico has to turn the rescuing over to Guts. He and Isidoro should start a support group. Farnese can lead it, she had all last season to accept being useless Laughing
-Next week: more phrases to try and make former-Casca pissed off enough to awaken and stab someone

Spoiler:

- Oh good, the trolls can't touch them
- A walking Behelit, catch it and make it a pet!
- Puck's riding an eyeball bat x)
- Oh great, a rape dungeon Neutral
- And demon-births
- Please just kill them all quick, Gatsoo
- Casca giving Guts the stink-eye
- Schierke, he's Guts, killing them all is what he does
- Giving Farnese a compliment now silent
- "Time to man-up, Isidoro"
- YEAH 100 MORE KILLS
- Was that the Skull Knight busting through? silent
- OH SHIIII IS THAT ONE OF THE GODHAND
- Skull-Knight-kun
- "King"
- So Griffith and/or the Behelit Apostle were the keys to merging the ethereal world and the mortal one? Or just the evil ethereal realms because why would they let God and Angels or things like that in?
- So the Skull Knight is the King of that old story... and wasn't the implication that he also supposed to be part of the Godhand too?
- And of course he kills the shit out of Ogres like nothing
- YEAH, ARM CANNON GUTS
- HAAA ISIDORO GUTS'ED A BAD GUY
- "That sword is forged by the malice of thousands of dying souls." Guts is a fucking monster
- Wow, he defeated the personification of one of the Godhand in the Ethereal realm, without being tempted to use the Behelit
- Schierke made a pact with a Mud God? What did she have to give up? silent
- Sticks a sword down his throat, out comes a blade made of behelits o.o
- A sword that lets them travel through different layers/dimensions. Give Guts that so he can go Kill Them All Shiny/thrilled
- Later, evil-shit astral realm
- FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF GUTS LOOKING AT THE NERD PATROL AND REMEMBERING THE BAND OF THE HAWK

S2E20:

-"I'm seeing all kinds of weird stuff." Puck concurs, while sitting on a flying disembodied eyeball Laughing
-I kind of hate seeing Casca always being nothing but the object for other peoples' motivation and growth, but I do still find it pretty touching how intently Farnese tries defend Casca all the time
-Casca seems more aware of things lately, she understood Farnese telling her to climb. Starting to feel a glimmer of hope for her.
-Oh, goody, random monstrous rape scene, it's been a while  Neutral
-Farnese finding the courage to try to fight the trolls from Casca's presence that she needs to protect.
-That dirty look Casca gives Guts Sad
-Farnese even manages to think about Serpico's welfare  Wink
-Quite remarkable how the entire female population of that village is young and attractive   Side-eye
-Guts is not impressed with the suggestion he can't handle a measly gazillion trolls without magic
-Guts thanking Farnese and her tearing up. Sure would be smart of those two to do some fighting lessons for next time Farnese winds up alone to protect Casca.
-"Now let's get started" and that smile Shiny/thrilled I've been loving the way you can see how hard Guts has been trying to be gentle and appreciative and cooperate with his allies and potential allies the last few episodes, the way he knows he has to leash the mad dog to protect Casca, but it also feels kind of like a relief for a moment to be just him and a bunch of monsters he has to slaughter and no need to hold back. Especially since now he seems to trust that his team can protect her enough to know he doesn't need to keep that in the back of his mind for a moment.
-OMG, Farnese actually killed something! There's hope for her yet!
-What just swept through?? Skull knight maybe???
-BEHEILIT OH FUCK
-Is that Butt-Window Godhand Lady???
-Hey, Guts, don't just stay there like that, getting close with demon boobs doesn't go well for people Uh-oh
-This is getting beyond innuendo into straight out... nuendo? Innuendome?
- SKULL KNIGHT!!
-King?
-Whore Princess of the Uterine Sea rofl What an awesome title!
-Isidoro standing in front of the group and calling "come at me" to the trolls Shiny/thrilled
-Shierke and Guts' personal pitfalls are very similar. Cute witch girl is not someone I'd have expected to be paralleled with Guts, it's kind of cool.
-Isidoro running out of the circle and kicking the boss troll's ass
-His sword is forged with the malice of thousands of dying souls?! Shiny/thrilled
-Schierke can be damn creepy when she's merged with spirits
-Skull Knight drawing the sword out of his throat glowing and wreathed with thorns and covered in eyes Shiny/thrilled
-Guts just being like "I don't understand a word you say, whatevs"
-The silent scene in the credits music of Serpico just running to Farnese
-OH MY GOD THAT SHOT OF THE OLD CREW AND THEN GUTS SAYING I NEVER THOUGHT I'D FIND THEM AGAIN  Happy tears  Crying  Happy tears NEED AN OUTRIGHT BAWLING BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW IF I'M HAPPY OR SAD BUT OH MY GOD MY HEART SMILEY just...my heart *sob*

Holy shit that ending...

- So the Skull Knight is the King of that old story... and wasn't the implication that he also supposed to be part of the Godhand too?

Spoiler:
Wait, I'm completely blanking on this, what old story?

Didn't they hear an old story at one point about an Ancient King using the Red Behelit and maybe implying it was the Skull Knight? And you could also sort of gather that that's why Zodd warned Guts about what was gonna happen, because he was supposed to be one the sacrifices?

e20:
-Hooray those silver shirts are actually good for something!
-That lil’ face-legs is even cuter than the kelpie.
-I love it when Miura gets to cut loose and just draw a bunch of weird monsters.
-Guts mentally reaches for Casca and it cuts to Farnese waking up Smug
-Yesss wield that blade for another’s protection.
-Why can’t it be enough for trolls to just eat people instead of rape them to death/make chestbursters? Disapproving
-The animation really has gotten better this season.
-Though I kinda wish there were more than one naked villager lady body template, but I guess that’d be expensive.
-And Farnese gives a shit about Serpico!
-Farnese gets gratitude, Isidoro can be counted on, everyone can be trusted to protect Casca while herding out a million civilians, Guts is so generous lately Heart
-OH. HEY. THERE. SLAN.
-“And my body is composed of troll intestines?” Laughing
-Shades of Corkus’ last moments.
-“Struggler” is my favorite of Guts’ epithets.
-Of course he knows what’s going on, Whore Princess. No words needed to be said by you in the first place. You’re just indulging in a penchant for the dramatic to impress the struggler.
-Her face of sheer delight as Guts blasts her right in the womb Shiny/thrilled
-YESSS FUCK YES ISIDORO
-Wonder what Schierke’s end of the pact with Rotting Roots is.
-Wait, “the aftereffects of her advent and destruction”? Not Schierke’s thing? Are the two related somehow? Please tell me Schierke’s end of the bargain had nothing to do with that?
-“I don’t have time for weird magic.” rofl
-That sword.
-OH MY GOD THAT ENDING Happy tears
-Ahhhh boy it’s finally Armor Time next week

Yeah, but I don’t remember when that happened in the anime. Did you read the manga? Did I forget that happening already? scratch  (Also, have they said the King’s name yet?)
