reLife

Post by bomaye on Sat Jul 02, 2016 7:04 am

A 27 year old-NEET is given a pill that changes his outward appearance back to a 17-year old's, and he takes part in an experiment: in return for having his living expenses covered and potentially being offered a job afterwards, he must live the life of a third year high-school student for 1 year.

There's a manga, and it's currently ongoing, and I'm not a reading a word of it yet, but I'll try to find a list of synched up chapters and episodes afterwards for those of you who prefer to read it. Or maybe I'll just read your summaries and try to match them up myself, it's better for readers to not read anime summaries because you're more likely to get spoiled I think <_<

[Edit: Apparently there's 105 chapters but they're short chapters, I saw someone figure that it's probably closer to 60 twenty page chapters over 13 episodes, so maybe about. They're also changing order of events apparently so maaaaaybe it won't be a completely faithful 1:1 adaptation to follow along with]

The anime just dropped. As in, all of it. The 13 episode season is entirely out in Netflix bingewatch form... somewhere. It may just be horrible subs right now, I don't actually know if crunchyroll or anyone go that part of it, so it may also be released weekly on a normal schedule. Don't search for stuff about it either way, there's going to be heavy metal spoilers out there

Now the important part: I've watched the first three episodes and so far it's mostly hilarious misunderstandings and hijinx that an adult would experience if back in high school (example: You can see the main character smokes in the picture already) with small mixtures of adult nostalgia, adult melancholy, or adult recognition of situations you never caught as a high schooler. There's also a slight mystery as to the origin and execution of the experiment with potential promise of maybe some more serious stuff to come.

You get the premise in the first 5 minutes of episode 1, the execution in the next 5 and then the rest is off to the races. I think you'll know by the end of the first episode whether you're in or not.

Ep 1

Spoiler:

- I like how within a (painful) 10 minutes, the premise and set-up is completely out of the way
- And how much of a goof he is trying to navigate high school again x)
- "A year surrounded by these bright young things." OLD PERSON FEELS ACTIVATE
- Forgets his pencil box x)
- THE. FUCKING. CIGARETTES.
- Can't do any of the math, this first day from hell x)
- I really liked how he was impressed with the teacher younger than him and gave her a genuine and heartfelt compliment Grin
- The "failed first sample" makes me wonder if there's other reLifers among the students, or if they're all reLifers.
- Someone else I was watching with saw signs that the main character was having panic attacks (the water bottle? also when he flashback'ed while talking to the teacher in the staff room)

I'm gonna be rewatching Ep 2 and 3 at some point so I'll save the reviews for them after

Look at me, watching two shows in one day!!   Run in circles flail

Ep1:

-There's something I dislike about the art, sometimes the faces just look weird and ugly.
-That opening shot of him talking on the phone and getting dressed for as if he'd come straight from work was very effective, condensed storytelling.
-In general it has an interesting writing style, scenes skip straight to the point in a way that sometimes feels awkwardly sudden, but it's also not wasting any of your time to get across what it wants to get across. Overall, I like that quite a lot.
-the intro makes it look kind of like a harem series.
-Watching him go into the classroom and constantly embarrassing himself is downright painful, I don't want to go back to high school, even vicariously!   Shudder
-I had old person feels about that "surrounded by these bright young things" line too, bomaye!
-I found myself wondering if the girl with glasses' hair was a wig, which really shouldn't happen in something drawn  Uh-oh
-Don't creep on high school kids!  Disapproving The teacher's cute, and she's age-appropriate... wait, but then she'd be creeping on high school kids as far as she knows. I think I'm just going to have to blanket Disapproving everyone till things get sorted out and everyone knows who the adults are
-I got a laugh at Ryo turning red with laughter at him getting caught with cigarettes and pissing off the teacher by reacting like an adult.
-That little flashback and clutching his throat bit was curious, there must be something interesting going on there. It seemed like there was a memory he was flashing to rather than just a general panic reaction.
-I think there's definitely going to be at least some other reLifers and maybe they all are. At any rate, it'd sure be a lot less unethical sending in all these adults disguised as teenagers if they all are.  Uh-oh

Overall it comes across as fairly light and inconsequential so far, but reasonably entertaining and has some genuine bits. And there's potential to get into some interesting things about adulthood and finding one's path, which is a topic that I don't see enough of in fiction (or fiction I like, at least, it's everywhere in mopey, pretentious semi-autobiographical literature for boring adults:P).

There's no way I'm going to watch these fast enough to keep up with the binge-watchers, but I'll keep trundling along for a bit at least.

I had someone who was more of the Boku Dake/Ajin type quit after the third episode, and I've only seen one with another of those people, so I'm not sure if this'll stick all the way for everyone

Yeah, I'm not clear yet on if there'll be enough of the aspects that interest me to watch all the way through or not, I'll have to wait and see on that.

Enail, I don't think it's just you finding the art weird/ugly. I tried reading the manga, and got like 15 chapters in (and yeah, the chapters are pretty short). ReLife has the interesting distinction of being a webcomic rather than something published in one of the manga magazines, and while that explains the super short chapters and the fact that it's all in color, the art is a steaming pile of shit that would not be in any way acceptable for a professional manga author. All the characters look exactly identical, everyone is super blocky and look like the author has no idea how proportions work, there's no details and backgrounds are never drawn. Ever.

Which is to say, it's not that I think all webcomics are ugly or webcomic material shouldn't be adapted, there are plenty of gorgeous webcomics and webcomics that succeed despite (or even because of) their basic looking art. It's just that it's not just you.

Anyway, I'm not sure I have enough interest in the characters and the story to continue reading (besides the art being pretty hideous, the author also has this annoying habit of having big empty white spaces so you think there's nothing there only to get to the next page and realize there was a totally critical piece of dialogue at the bottom of that giant empty white space that you missed and now have to go back for, because heaven forbid the author actually have to draw anything that's happening in the story instead of just shoving it all in text boxes at the bottom of the page)

You'd think that's the kind of thing they'd improve on when turning it into an anime Shrug And not a promising sign that you're that far in and don't care enough to keep going.

Wowwwwww that's impressively tight writing in the anime/impressively slow pacing in the comic. I know there are advantages to different kinds of pacing and that it takes longer to tell a story in comics, but this makes me think the author's got a good idea but is not a very good storyteller.

Yeah I think another problem is that in the serial publishing/webcomic format, the author feels a need to recap every chapter what happened in the previous one. So the first couple pages or so are just the characters saying again what they just said with a poorly drawn reaction face. Maybe this whole "let's make sure everyone remembers where we left off by repeating the end of the previous chapter" was necessary for when it was published chapter by chapter as a webcomic, but holy hell it does not lend itself well to binge reading as a result. But given how short the chapters are (like 20 pages each?) that's a good chunk of content taken up with shit like the recap and title pages

Re: reLife

Post by bomaye on Sun Jul 03, 2016 9:30 pm

Episode 2

For what it's worth, this was the one that the person I watched it with who quit thought was the "good" one

Spoiler:

- He fails all the high school tests, I think I would too x)
- I fucking love when An and the main leaned in with their "DOHOHOHOHOHOHOO I SHIP THIS" look
- I also love that as an adult, the main character is kind of watching a slice of life anime in front of him and reacting similarly to how we do
- I'm somewhat wondering if An-chan is a reLifer too. Her and the main character are having extremely similar difficulties, and she "read the school rules" about cell phones rather than knew them off-hand from being in school.
- Also when he put the money in Hashira or whatever her name is hand's and then realizes what he he's doing and backs up with his hands up x)
- "The future I assumed I would have never came to me." Old people feels
- Putting his hand on her head and telling her "well done" is such an adult thing to do, I like when he kind of accidentally breaks his cover
- So two things that really stick out to me:
- #1: Ryo, the guy running the experiment, makes it sound like he can make it all disappear with a magic wand, but the conditions of the experiment make it very convenient for people to say nothing anyway. I'm wondering if he's lying, or may not even be a legit lab scientist
- #2: The "failed sample" makes me think that Hashiro/black haired smarty pants is the failed sample. She was the smartest girl in school "last year" but had no friends and was alone the whole time. Also she wants to change but just doesn't know how, throwing NEETS into a social setting doesn't mean they'll automatically integrate so maybe another NEET can recognize and be more sympathetic to it. Also, Ryo was extremely interested in how those two get along but less so for how he's getting on with Oga and An

Episode 3

Spoiler:

- THEY KEEP FAILING TESTS WORSE x)
- Hishiro had a "bright young things" moment while everyone was laughing in the classroom silent
- Poor Hishiro HAS AN EVIL SMILE OH NO
- Dooooooohohohohohooo Gym Teachers need to fuck, if they aren't already :]
- Old-people athletics and "JUST THROW ME AWAY" fucking KILLED me
- "The healing ability of a high schooler" the way she talks makes her sound like a re-Lifer
- Someone pointed out that the different outros are actually late 90s/early 00s hit songs, so he basically listens to music that was popular when he was in high school

Episode 4 - Teenage Angst!

Spoiler:

- Rena using the Silver Pin to keep close to Oga Sad
- Hrm, Rena having a "bright young things" moment when she realizes she's getting beat out by her two rivals, probably just a special affect for when people feel like outsiders
- Kaizaki saving Oga from making the situation worse in the cafeteria, An-chan's in on it too
- I really liked the conversation between Ryo and Kaizaki about potentially letting bad things happen to the other kids so they can learn about it. "Let your heart, which had dried up and gone stiff, beat once more." ;_;
- Rena's ANGST
- Rena trying to steal the bag Sad
- Good guy Kaizaki shielding her from the fall
- CAUGHT

Episode 5 - The One Where Everything Is Worth It.

Spoiler:

- We finally get a flashback to Kaizaki's work life, where his senpai's co-workers sought to sabotage her because she was better than them, and she just responded by thinking it was sad :/
- Kaizaki is gonna out himself one of these times, dude went full adult mode to get Rena's confession or jealousy.
- Especially the Head Pat, holy shit.
- Once Rena's freakout is over, she immediately returns to HARDASS TSUNDERE mode, and she still doesn't believe that Hishiro has bad smiling skills
- Telling Hishiro the truth about Rena, gad damn
- I both fucking love that he's like "OH HELL NO, I'M NOT LEAVING, INTO THE BUSHES" and that fucking RYO WAS ALREADY THERE, THESE FUCKING ADULT NERDS ACTING LIKE THE REST OF US VIEWERS
- Rena admitting she hated her, throws Kaizaki under the bus for ratting her out, HIGH SCHOOL MISUNDERSTANDINGS INTENSIFIES
- FINALLY finds out Hishiro can't fake smile, friendship ensues Happy tears
- Two 17 year olds drinking and smoking together, for shame
- Ryo pointing out that Rena may remember him someday when faced with a similar issue in the real world makes me wonder if he really can erase people's memories or not
- And Ryo brings the mini-disc outro tun this time

Re: reLife

Post by Aggrax on Thu Jul 07, 2016 2:22 am

It's kind of weird watching this show at the same time as Oremonogatari, since both are basically playing around with the High School Romance tropes in different, interesting ways.

Episode 6, 7 & 8:

-I loved the "What is an MD?" moment they had. As someone that still has an 8-track player in his car, this scene resonated with me so hard.
-Seriously, I related to Kaizaki way to much ^_^. Probably because my 27th birthday is less than a month away.
-An is revealed to by another support staff member, like Ryou
-I like that they acknowledge that some people would use the ReLife program to be massive creeps and that they screen and watch for those kinds of things, kind of ramps down the creep factor a bit.
-Kaizaki is a good dude, trying to let An down gently when he thinks she likes him. No super creeping for this dude.

Episode 7
-100% flashback about Ryou, which was nice. We learn about his issues last year being a support staff person.
-I am 10,000% convinced that Hishiro is another ReLifer at this point and that she was subject 001.
-This also does a good job of fleshing out the details of the ReLife program, like how Kaizaki was able to re-age briefly to take care of an issue with his convenience store job an how he let people know he wouldn't be in contact for a year so his friends wouldn't come looking for him.

Episode 8
-DRAMA TIME BITCHES
-Kariu drama is back with some Tamarai drama sprinkled in for good measure.
-Nice to see that Kariu is dealing with her feelings in a very teenage way, which is to say not super well. She is trying, but can't quite keep her more negative feelings in check. Worse, it's spilling over into everyone else.
-We also briefly transition to an all female version of Haikyuu for some more drama.

Episode 9:

Putting this one in a different spoiler because they drop a huge bomb on us.

-Mostly it's just Kariu and Tamarai's inability to talk about their feelings driving the plot now.
-Kaizaki tries to help Kariu and Ooga with his shipping manipulation but it does not go well.
-Hishiro is hilarious in the middle of the episode. At Tamarai's insistence, she finally eats something other than ramen for lunch and just seems so mystified by this "non-ramen". At one point is looks like she is going to google "How to eat non-ramen". Then later, she comes over to Kaizaki's place because she doesn't think what she has to say will fit in text, only to be reminded that phones can be used to call people.
-I'm double spoiling this next part because of triggers.
Trigger Warning: Suicide:
So they finally reveal why he keeps grabbing his neck Run in circles flail

During a conversation with Hishiro where she brings up how her actions made things worse for someone else in the past, Kaizaki also talks about his experience working at that company as an adult, although edited to be about "school" instead. When Hishiro asks him what happened to his Sempai, he grabs his neck and triggers a flashback where is looks like he walked in on her having hung herself. The then seems to see her in Hishiro and he grabs Hishiro and starts hugging and apologizing to her. It's pretty intense.

So yeah, that happened. Probably gonna keep bingeing this either the rest of tonight or tomorrow.

Ore Mono is animated happiness Grin

Episode 6

Spoiler:

- I love that Oga still doesn't get anything
- AHA I was right about An being another reLifer, but not a support staffer.
- It makes Ryo seem a little less sinister with An messing around with him and them having friendly banter. I also found it interesting that for once, Kaizaki was the one with the "upper hand" or the one they were putting the power of the moment into.
- "Half was a lie" Oh shiiiiiii

Episode 7

Spoiler:

- I forget if it was this ep or last ep, but that line about Kaizaki "losing someone close to him" was damnnnnn :/
- I wonder if An failed her testing on purpose just so Ryo could get another shot at being a reLife support worker.
- With An pulling her hair down in the previous ep and then showing Ryo approaching him first and testing him with the wallet, I'm wondering if there's more to An "selecting him at first site"
- All signs pointing to Hishiro as Subject 001. She's in Ryo's eyeshot often (except for the one where he was sad that he wasn't doing well), she asks a lot of questions, and doesn't adapt well to the social stuff.
- I also find it really interesting the contrast between the seeming work problems that Kaizaki had and Ryo having work problems too even though he's like his reLife support coach
- And also, if Ryo was getting "too close" to Sample 001, what's hanging out and drinking with Kaizaki supposed to be?

Episode 8: High school drama!

Spoiler:

- Kaizaki getting a "Ganbatte!" from teacher and feeling okay about it
- Kaizaki still failing. An was failing on purpose just to get close to him, but at least Honoka latched on to Team Failure x)
- Everyone asking about crushes x)
- An and Ryo maybe in their late 20s too, but they sure don't act like it, these lame-os arguing over who gets to talk to Kaizaki over the phone x)
- Pooooooor Honoka is too talented to get along with her peers

Episode 9: The one where the seemingly innocent High School Drama suddenly becomes intense and worth it

Spoiler:

- Chizuru telling Honoka that she's looking ugly today, god damn x)
- Doooohohohohohoo Kaizaki leaving Oga and Rena alone
- Oga is somehow a maximum level idiot with not realizing that Rena is heavily into him but still manages to do the romantically correct thing by helping her down the stairs
- Chizuru tried something different for lunch ;_;
- "Friends acting weird help" GOOGLE SEARCH
- I love that she shows up at Kaizaki's place not realizing she could've just phoned him x))))
- "Don't jump her" AN AND RYO MIGHT BE THE BIGGEST FUCKING PAIR OF NERDS IN HISTORY
- And then Kaizaki and Chizuru get down to talking and every single feel you've ever had melts out of your body and pools on the floor below. "I can't afford to be stupid and mess up." The bullying story, Kaizaki having a flashback panic attack over finding his work senpai had PROBABLY KILLED HERSELF JESUS
- "Please don't call the police" I love you, Kaizaki
- REVENGE YOSHAAAAAAAA
- "FIGHT ON" Adorable as all fuck
- Yep, there it is, Honoka didn't want to sports in the first place :/

Episode 10 - "Just fuck my shit up." "Comin right up, fam"

Spoiler:

- Honaka didn't want to sports in the first place, so she went to a sub-par sports school just on the off-chance she could have fun with it :/
- Flashbacks of Hishiro going to new schools and new grades
- DAT REASSURING HAND ON THE BACK
- The fucking nerds listening in get caught, fucking hold their PACKS UP TO THEIR FACES LIKE IT WOULD HIDE THEM  rofl
- Ryo thanking Kaizaki, because Ryo couldn't get close to Sample 001 but Kaizaki could ;_;
- Of course they have her address ready to roll x)
- "Delivery" Nice trick x)
- Chizuru with the flick of doom and layin down the law ;_;
- That double push ;_;
- Chizuru stuck between crying girls AGHHHHHHH THE SMILE THE SMILE
- I like how everyone in this show has to be around the corner watching everyone else's drama unfold. An and Ryo watching Oga, Kaizaki, Nobu and Aki watching Rena, Chizuru and Honoka x)

Episode 10:
Everyone spies on everyone else and also some Haikyuu-esque drama happens. Good comedy in this episode, especially the guys hiding their faces with their bags. Good job guys, you are masters of stealth. Kaizaki and Hishiro's interaction while going to Kariu's place was genuinely hilarious.

Episode 11:
Alright show, I want you to look on the ground. You see that smashed up, pulpy thing there? That used to be my heart. Look at what you've done to it! I needed that for living!

But seriously, episode 11 was more great backstory for Kaizaki and really helped bring home the theme of how our actions have a ripple effect on the people around us. A nice and somber episode with just enough light hearted moments to keep it from being full on depressing.

Episode 12:
May as well call this one "Kaizaki ships people successfully". Ooga finally realizes that he likes Kariu and resolves to do something about it. The rest of the cast is simply hilarious and adorable while helping them out. Guest staring Good Guy Office Worker from last episode as Good Guy Random Stranger.

Episode 13:

We get a nice, satisfying resolution to the Ooga and Kariu plot that has been ongoing for the entire series so far. Seeing them confess to each other was a wonderful moment.

I also really like Kaizaki's speech about the fireworks, about how they are bright and pretty but fade from view so quickly. It really underscores the meloncholy he feels about being so involved in these peoples lives even though he knows they won't remember him.

And now, I would like to state for the record that I CALLED IT. I KNOW WE ALL PROBABLY SAW IT COMING BUT STILL I CALLED IT!

Hishiro is another ReLifer, subject 001. She and Kaizaki are both under the impression that the other one will forget them completely in one year. My heart, it can not take this pain.

Both he and Hishiro are now struggling with the same questions, do they embrace the moment at it's fullest, knowing that they will fade from others lives and leave a hole there? Or do they stay back and let things play out around them, completely negating the point of the exercise? It's implied that Hishiro chose to stay back before, which coupled with her already low emotional intellect made it impossible for her to integrate and understand others. Kaizaki set out with the intention to do the same things, but his nature prevented him from just staying back, he had to jump in. In doing so he dragged Hishiro into this world she was trying to avoid.

I really hope this show gets a second season, because if it keeps up at the quality it had this season, I think it could be one of the better slice of life/teenage romance shows ever made.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna watch come Ore Mono and gush about adorable children and their adorable romance ways. I could use some weapons grade smiles in my life after that emotional rollercoaster. Wink

Just finished. Upgrading to a recommendation. The first few episodes are more light-hearted set-up for the stuff that comes later.

Episode 11

Spoiler:

Finding out that junior workers at his old job look up to him and then finding it out it wasn't a set-up at all ;_;

And oh god, I got wrecked in the credits when it showed him sharing a drink with Senpai and then she faded out

Episode 12 - The one where DOHOHOHOHOOOOOOOOOO

Spoiler:

- I love how the 17 year old adults are sitting around, drinking and gossiping about the love lives of high school students
- Oga finally realizes it <3 <3 <3
- I love how fucking EVERYONE suddenly shows up, they've been waiting months for this ship to happen and they're already front and center

Episode 13 - The one where my heart experiences explosive decompression

Spoiler:

- OGA YOU DENSE AGHHHHHHHHHHH THAT FUCKING CONFESSION GREATEST FUCKING CONFESSION EVER HOLY SHIT rofl rofl rofl
- The fucking REVEAL for Hishiro as Subject 001. Rewind flashbacking through her year. The show kind of wants you to figure it out beforehand but GOD DAMN the timing on the reveal
- The fucking heart-destruction as Arata and Hishiro are simultaneously happy and sad that they think the other is a high school student and it's kind of forbidden and that the other person may forget them.
- The speaking under their breaths during the fireworks.
- There's HOPE because the contract was possibly getting a job afterwards at the reLife labs and both of them might come out of their reLifes there silent silent silent

So apparently the anime ended around Chapter 108 and there's 133 chapters so far, so we've got a ways to go before a potential Season 2

Look at me go! Snail

Ep2:

-"With those scores, who knows when you'll escape the make-up loop." No hidden meanings there.
-Glasses Girl's hair is drawn weird, and it drives me crazy. Actually, all of them sometimes, but her most often.
-Him sitting there monologuing in real time to decide whether to eat lunch with Glasses Girl.  Laughing
-Oh shit, I just realized that Ryo isn't the same guy as the one who got the class rep position, they look too much alike.  Headsmack
-Ouga looks so sincerely distressed at being assigned homework by the people he thought he was tutoring. Laughing
-Not bringing money "out of habit?" Same excuse as Kaizaki used for the cigarettes, Hishiro's gotto be an adult. (though, I dunno why an adult wouldn't be in the habit of bringing money, unless they accept cards pretty much everywhere in Japan now?) And she jumps to the conclusion that he's an adult for lending her too much money, why wouldn't she figure he was just rich, unless it was on her mind already.
-Old person shock that cell phones aren't banned at school
-And then Ryo looking at Hishiro eating alone like that. Subject 001?
-"Even at this age" - is that a confession? ADULT ADULT ADULT!!
-"I'm not sure how to respond to this sudden attempt to mug me"  rofl
-Her attempts at explaining that she's trying to get his phone number was outright painful to watch, but his reassuring grown-up response was adorable.
-I'd somehow missed earlier when they said that no one else would remember him after the year was up. Well, that's sure not to result in any angst or heartbreak!  innocent

I'm finding it entertaining enough, but I'm watching more for the promise of things getting deeper further in.

The reassuring headpat. Ganbatte! Happy tears

Yeah, it's really around Episode 4 and 5 that it starts hitting the stride of what it's trying to be

Ep3:

-That title freaks me out. NOOOOOOO, I'M NOT OLD YET! Sad
-It's nicely done the way Hishiro's deadpan sense of humour slips in there alongside all the straightfaced-because-she's-super-serious.
-You know, the premise that everyone's memories of him will be erased implies some pretty impressively detailed mind-altering abilities if he actually makes friends and affects people (unless the secret is that they're all adults and therefore all get to keep all their memories and the company doesn't really have the ability to remove memories at all??). That plus the de-aging thing both seem like they should have some pretty major impacts on the world that would make it a lot different from this one, and probably wouldn't be used only for sending unemployed people back to high school  Uh-oh I feel like if they never get into all that and just act like it's our world except for the reLife thing, it'll be a bit of a waste.
-Ouga doesn't really seem so much easier than Kazu-kun... Shrug
-"Nobody's that bad at smiling" Laughing
-I like Amatsu-sensei, but I hope they're not going to get too focused on a romance with her and that other teacher, I'm really bored of the whole 'acting like you hate someone means you like them' trope. It's one of those things that happens constantly in fiction but pretty rarely IRL and at this point 90% of all fictional romances like that feel like they're just based on the fact that it's a familiar trope and an easy shorthand to luuuuuuurv, instead of anything genuine and specific between the characters.
-oh god, having the body of a grown-up on the inside really would fuck with you in gym class. And would be soooooo depressing in general .
-OLD PERSON BEING A CREEPER ALERT  Disapproving
-I sympathize with Hishiro. Just because someone's been in your class and spent all of last year in the same group with you and you hear their name multiple times daily, why would that mean you'd know their name? innocent
-His balance has gone to the point where he can't run a race without falling down? Is he supposed to be 27 or 87??  Suspect
-Kariu's reactions to Hishiro are exaggerated for comedy, but it still has that real feeling.

Also, damn, I'm pretty sure I accidentally got spoiled on something big.

Spoiler:

They don't focus on it at all, and the one other time it comes up, it's kind of treated like they're friends busting on each other

Spoiler:

I nearly died laughing during that, partly because I'm old and breathing is hard now, and partly because of how goddamn true that would be rofl

Also, damn, I'm pretty sure I accidentally got spoiled on something big.

Good news!  cheers

Not sure what ep this would be a spoiler for (or even if it's true, but it does make sense):
Ryo is subject 1?
