Delayed-action bandwagoning, yay, Werel!
- E4:
-those creepy smiles
-it's kind of sweet the way he's trying to look out for all the kids and solve their problems.
-Hishiro thinks she's been getting on with Kariu
-The closeup on the Subject 001 and 002 binders, Yoake totally is 001. Spoiler confirmed?
-"Seeing your friends everyday like it's nothing is something you lose when you grow up" OLD PERSON FEELS
-Kariu is cute with her hair tied back.
-I like the way they're using encroaching darkness and black scribbles to show Kariu's story going from light high school angst to something a little more intense.

Re: reLife
- E5:
-If they were actually knocked out, they probably should go to the hospital or something rather than just a school nurse, find out if they have concussions
-I'm glad to finally get some snippets of his adult life; it can get to feeling a little untethered and floating, the way he's just been dropped back into high school and nothing of his actual life or experiences comes up at all other than just little 'he's oooooold' moments, it feels a little more solid seeing some signs that his life existed and that he wasn't just in some kind of mysterious black box of unspecified adultness without actually doing anything.
-He sounds like such a grownup asking Kariu to come clean about Hishiro's bag, I was half-expecting him to say "I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed"
-He said it
-Hishiro is too sweet and innocent. If she turns out to be really an adult reLIFEING, I'm kind of worried for her going around in adult life like that.
-His rewind walking
-Kariu figuring out that that's how Hishiro smiles
-I like how they're doing more expressive things with the art, not just chibis and the usual set symbols like sweatdrops, but really going freely with all kinds of different things for humour and for emotion, it feels like the animators are starting to feel their way to something more unique for the spirit of this show.
-Hishiro's dreamy "after all, we're friends"
-Admitting that his pep talk for Kariu was both true and not all the truth, a nice little angle on the complexity of being an adult and the multiple sides of life.
-Next week's preview: nooooooo, don't hit on the old person! Hopefully if we're focusing on Glasses Girl Whose Name I Can't Remember, she'll get a little better development, so far I've found her really fake-feeling as a character somehow.
It feels like the show's hitting its stride now, both with the freer art and getting back to his adult life more, and the other characters are getting developed enough that they're starting to be interesting.

Re: reLife
- E6:
-Of course Hishiro has to google it to figure out she has a crush But is that the 'impossible' of someone who doesn't get social interactions, or the one of an adult who thinks she's crushing on a teenager? I do have to say, though, if she's an adult, I don't buy it at all, she's being written like a teenager who doesn't get social interaction, not an adult who doesn't get social interaction and is pretending to be a teenager.
-Adult Shit cleanup panic
-His old stereo
-"You can't call it rude at this point, it's just a fact" Seriously, though, why is he still failing all his tests!? At first I assumed he'd just forgotten everything and wasn't putting any effort in, the last time I had to look at some high school math stuff I was like "I would totally know how to do it if I, uh, remembered what these symbols stood for or what anything meant ," but it only took a bit of looking things up to figure it out again, at this point he's done enough studying that he should be picking everything up fine by now, if he did alright in school the first time. Like, are they going to explain this? At this point it needs an explanation.
-Oh jeez, that little flashback to sitting with his adult friends looking like he wishes he was anywhere else. My feelings
-They've bugged his phone?!? This reLife thing is horrifying in multiple ways.
-An's a plant! I'm relieved, actually, because that scene of her declaring her love and taking down her hair for Suddenly Beautiful!, and groping him out of nowhere was so, so, soooooooo terrible I was thinking it either had to be something like that or this show had just suddenly leapt out and jumped the shark.
-I'm starting to wonder if the entire ReLife staff is actually just people like Kaizaki who were sent back and then if they don't want to go on with adult life they get recruited or something like that. Which would kind of make it seem more like a cult than anything.
-Bomaye, it's funny you found that bit with Yoake and An joking around was humanizing, I actually felt like the whole thing made it more unsettling, how casual and ordinary they were while we're just seeing they can listen in on his phone and enter his house, that they were stalking him for at least a year beforehand, that there's undercover staff who might be testing him at any time, that he can't know if any of what he encounters is fake. There's a whole lot going on that we're not seeing, and I find it pretty unsettling. I'm wondering if this whole thing is going to turn out to be less of a rehabilitation/nostalgia thing and more of a creepy lab rat situation. It doesn't seem like the sort of show that would go too far in the creepy science/surveillance direction, though.

I guess it can be kind of unsettling, but you also see the way Ryo and An argue and how An went ahead and did something that Ryo didn't approve of, even though the test was for a good reason (I think it'd be even more awful if an adult used it as an opportunity to just nail high school girls without any consequence). And kind of how Kaizaki already knows he's under observation. And how Ryo brought over one of his songs at the end of Episode 5. Like friendly gestures and not like sinister/clinical objectifying things.

But how could he not have picked up something between gossiping!? I mean, he is actually being forced to solve a few problems here and there! Especially given that it's stuff he already knows, he just needs a reminder. It bothers me!

Yeah, I can see that's how it's meant, and clearly Ryo and An are people who are genuinely trying to form a friendly connection, it's just I find it kind of creepy anyway, that they're nice, friendly people who don't see him as just a subject, but the project they're part of is still pretty sinister when you step outside of how the story's treating it to think about it in real world terms. Or maybe it's just that I'm still horrified by the idea of adults going back to high school, so everything seems sinister

- E7:
-I got an explanation for why he's doing so badly at school, now I can sleep at night
-BACKSTORY EPISODE! I guess the spoiler I got was wrong, looks like Ryo was legitimately staff and not subject for 001. Was a pretty good theory, whoever came up with it, though, it would have been both totally out of nowhere but also make total sense in retrospect. I guess it's back to my old theory that it's Hishiro, though I don't buy it in terms of how they've been playing her. Other than her, it really feels like it could be anyone
-Getting pretty curious why they need to know such random traits as how watchful a subject is. And do they put them in earlier years if they have more social trouble, or what? I want to know more about the experiment side of all this!
-Trauma of thinking he's the cause of losing someone?! D-does Kaizaki need to go find some really pretty scenery and send letters to his past self???
-Ryo getting all shiny about surprising Kaizaki with his teenage self
-They're not gonna have the reveal about who 001 was after all that?? Backstory episodes are supposed to give answers!

Re: reLife
- eps 1-3:
-"I can legally be friends with high school girls"
-Lollll cigarettes make you a scary delinquent
-Hmmmm, is pink hair glasses transfer another ReLifer? Especially given the test failures?
-I like this gym teacher.
-Oga-Kariu is already a little bit adorable
-Shades of Erased with this "what am I doing, she's a high schooler" stuff
-Hey, was the handler watching Hishiro in the cafeteria?
-Bahaha the list of epithets for Kaizaki just keeps getting better. "1000 yen score of four cigarettes guy"
-Jeez Hishiro, just spill all your deepest insecurities about having no friends in your second conversation with this guy. That level of spontaneous oversharing is how you end up with no close friends
-So Kaizaki is actually hilarious, clever, and capable of thinking on his feet, so what's his NEET deal? Just bad luck, laziness, or something else we'll find out later?
-"Trying to take the first step toward not being a friendless loner" MY HEART
-Oh god everyone's going to forget about him at the end of the year? Recipe for heartbreak, they're really gonna twist this knife aren't they
-Okay I pretty much love Vulcan Nerd Hishiro. "I did not foresee this consequence. My plan was flawed."
-"Nobody's that bad at smiling"
-Yeah dude, 27 year old bodies are old and creaky. One foot in the grave by 29. By 32 you basically can't walk down a flight of stairs without shattering your kneecaps and having six heart attacks
-Poor sore loser Kariu. I, uh, don't identify with that at all
-Bahahaha whaaat, they censor a skinned knee?
-"Princess-carried by a dude ten years younger"
-Hishiro sure does talk a bunch about being high-school aged, or not
-Hey with all this talk about how Subject 1 didn't change, and Hishiro talking about how she's trying to change now, and the handler having been in her class last year... HMMM
- eps 4-6:
-Her terrible smiles make me chuckle every time
-Oh noooo, no, you are not getting to be friends with Kariu
-WAAAAUUGHH "Let your heart, which had dried up and gotten stiff, beat once more."
-I guess Kariu is definitely not Subject 1 if we get access to her internal monologue.
-WHOOP there it is, Kariu and Oga sitting in a tree. "I wanted to prove I was good enough to be with him." Don't let your love make you do mean things, Kariu
-Kaizaki is bizarrely good at saying the exact right thing to make people take stock of their actions. Telling Kariu that bullying is a cheap way out of feeling threatened by someone's talent. Why is this dude a NEET again? He's so good with people
-Oh, sorry, not a NEET, a part-timer
-I wonder if he quit that job in protest of the bullying of his mentor. What a peach.
-Oh no, his impulse to old-man lecture is getting him in trouble
-Aaaand a comforting hand on the head and some wise words. I hope the job they offer him after this is high school guidance counselor.
-Poor guileless, malice-free Hishiro.
-Oh noooo, poor guileless, malice-free, crush-having Hishiro
-Actually loling at her turning the creepy-face on and off when Kariu asks her to
-BAWWWW, FRIENDS
-....friends with a rivalry clause
-Aw, I wonder if Kaizaki gets to stay friends with his handler whose name I can't remember after the experiment.
-Oh my god, googling "heart stirring pangs." This fucking nerd
-Hey why don't Oga and An-chan think it's weird that he's 17 and living all alone? Is that a normal thing?
-Ahahaha their word for sexual harassment is "sekuahara"?! I love the Japanese
-Ohshiiiiiiit, she knows him from adulthood?!
-Oh no her heart's gonna get broooooke
-Ahahaha she's so delighted at the prospect of Kaizaki and whatshisface being lovers, I guess all high school girls are rotten girls deep down
-OH SNAAAAAAP! Did not see this coming. Thought there was something up with Pink Hair, but not this. But she was secretly old all along, no wonder they can gossip together so well
-So.. part of the experiment is... jailbait resistance tests. Uh-huh. How many times has THAT gone horribly wrong.
-And the very second after I type that she says it's gone horribly wrong multiple times ..... (but wait, how are they only on subject number 002 if that's the case?)
-Yoake's (okay they've said his name enough times for me to remember it) ability to go straight from ice glare to casual grin is pretty creepy.
-Half of what the handlers told him was true and half wasn't, huh? Gotta keep those twists coming down the line?
- ep 7-9:
- -Enjoying the handler backstory.
-The intro song is growing on me >.<
-Everything about subject 001 not changing at all just makes me think more and more that it's Hishiro, she got chewed out for not changing at all, she begged for a second year to make it work, and that's why she's finally making an effort
-Oh no, Yoake thinks Kaizaki is super fucked up inside. Just believe in him Yoake, he's not a repeat of 001
-The more I learn about the ReLIFE staff, the less it seems like a pragmatic government program to rehabilitate NEETs into productive members of society, and the more it seems like some sort of Quantum Leap-style guardian angel of mercy setup
-"I might have run away if I'd been alone." FEELS
-Kariu overcoming her jealousy to stick up for Tamarai
-If Salieri characters are a soft spot of Enail's, Kariu must be her favorite
-"You look a little ugly today."
-Okay, on the Oga-Kariu train for reals. I'm sure being relentlessly nice to the tsundere is a common narrative tack, but it's getting me. "I'm too wimpy to carry you, but I can give you a shoulder..."
-Oh no, what happened to senpai at work? He's acting suicide levels of PTSD about it
-That hug
-The Japanese word for revenge is ribenji?! Dude that seems like way too Japanese a concept to need to borrow a word from English
-Her go-team-go revenge hands
-Big Brother squadron's gonna steal Hishiro's revenge?
-Oh nope they're gonna make her get her heartstrings tugged by a beautiful friendship tale
- ep 10-13:
-Little Hishiro getting all disaffected with each passing year
-"This mess is the result" okay she's totally 001
-HIS HAND ON HER BACK
-YOU GUYS CAN'T HIDE BEHIND YOUR BACKPACKS XD
-Okay the ReLIFE people are thanking him, she's 001.
-"Lying comes as naturally to you as breathing. Your character is suspect." THIS VULCAN NERD
-Hishiro calling Kariu her friend.
-Also, this series is Bechdeltastic, passes with flying colors
-Awwwww friendship conquers volleyball losses
-Senpai's grave eh? Yeah, figured she killed herself
-...Yoake sleeps sitting up every night?
-It's only been 4 months of high school? How is this series gonna be over in 2 episodes?
-"Grow up" But also, what a perfect ReLIFE subject this makes him
-Oh god he's the one who found her??
-Holy shit this company is brutal
-Oh man he's learning to temper his regret with a new perception of his own courage in doing the right thing and getting horribly fucked over by it, MY FEELS
-And now he's saying "If I'd been alone" again...
-Hm, if Hishiro is 001, why doesn't she know An's name? Maybe she also doesn't know she's staff?
-Yeah dude, summer vacation is the best. Why do you think I'm still in school at 29
-You're right, Kaizaki, the ReLIFE staff are horrible grownups
-Okay An-chan you're way too into this transgressive secret-adult-men dating high school girls thing
-How did I just notice that Kaizaki has a poster of different whale species on his wall? What a charmingly juvenile thing
-"Falling for me yet?" Totally, Oga
-Bahahaha "I self-destructed." Yeah, you sure are in a good position to warn high school kids about being a foreveralone
-OGA WHY ARE YOU SUCH A PRUDE
-Heyyyyy is it really just coincidence that New Company Man found Kariu
-"It's happening!"
-Hishiro's creepy smiles just never get old
-A festival in special dresses, this feels like Genshiken
-Lol Yoake making Kaizaki jealous
-Hishiro's ring toss math. THIS NERD
-MY HEAAARRT
-"You're surrounded by friends too, Hishiro"
-YEAHHHHH 001 called it.......because the viewer was supposed to call it all along
-THE DRAMATIC IRONY IS MURDERING MY FEELS
-YEAH HISHIRO YOU GET YOURS, GIRL, GO FOR IT
-This finale is giving me caps lock feels ._.
-NO THIS CANNOT BE THE SERIES FINALE
-Oh thank god, "next term"

- E8:
-His reaction to the make-up test talk with the teacher. Come on, give us some answers this episode!
-Sensei gives good pep talks
-THEY'RE DOING THEIR BEEEESSSSTTTT!!!!!
-Hishiro's black screen moment
-AYE-AYE SIR!!!!
-Kariu standing up for Honoka and telling the gossip girls off. I like how intense and direct Kariu is about everything.
-Not wildly interested in Honoka or overly intense and yet disaffected childhood friend guy.
-Poor Kariu. That Salieri theme always gets me.
This episode was pretty meh. This show needs the adult feels element or some hints about the mysteries of his past or subject 001 or the reLife project, without those aspects, it's kind of just a mediocre story about random high school kids and their ordinary problems, which, even aside from the fact that I'm not that into that genre, it doesn't have the really solid characterization or the charm to pull off that well.

It sounds like Werel enjoyed her reLife
4 Werel

There's a payoff even if there doesn't feel like one
4 Werel
- Spoiler:
I don't know if you caught it or if I skimmed over it, but Hishiro didn't know An because An is newer than Yoake.
In Japan, I think it's a regular-ish thing for either kids to live away from home (like being sent from the country to go to school) or for parents to be absent because they work a lot. Or at least it's regular enough that it lives as an anime trope.
Also DAT DRAMATIC IRONY, DAT REVEAL THAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO KNOW

Re: reLife
- E9:
-Bees? Oh Hishiro, never change.
-Disaffected Childhood Friend Guy sees Honoka run off crying and is just like "alright, time to murder someone. Not that I'll enjoy it."
-Nosy old man Kaizaki... though, going away and leaving them alone is sort of an odd thing to call nosy
-Poor Kariu's really melting down all over the place.
-Clueless pretty-boy does something right with Kariu for once!
-Okay, the way they've animated her going down the stairs is suuuuuper-lazy. She's not putting any real weight on him or on the bannister, and she's not walking right for if it's just that she can't bend it but can put weight on. Why bother animating shit if you're not going to do it right? /things only I pay attention to
-Friends acting weird help
-Office politics/classroom politics - at last, we're getting somewhere!
-"Wait, I'm the one freaking out"
-The way he always grabs at his throat when he's reminded of his former workplace.
-...oh
-That desperate hug and saying sorry over and over while Hishiro just sits there
-So, does that mean that Kariu and Honoka are plants, or Hishiro (I still think she's more likely to be 001, though I still don't think she's acting like a clueless adult pretending to be a clueless teen, so maaaaybe plant), or the situation's otherwise a set-up in some way to trigger a reaction from him? Maybe they try to place multiple ReLifers who they think are likely to hit on each others' issues together.
-FIGHT ON!
-Also kind of wondering if Disaffected Childhood Friend and Other Childhood Friend are ReLife staff also, the way he says he's "allowed" to do this or that and the other guy tries to keep him reasonable. I might also be getting paranoid.

I think "What happened to your Senpai?" is one of the most sit-up-straight moments in the entire series. Grabbing his throat, far-off look, insta-dark background, just a jarring reaction to an otherwise innocent question

- Yep, definitely the hardest hitting thing so far. But it wasn't out of nowhere, I've been wondering about the grabbing throat thing since the 1st or 2nd episode, it could have been just a general panic reaction, but they've definitely been hinting that it's more than that.

Re: reLife
- E10:
-If Honoka always got resentment for being better than everyone else, why the fuck wouldn't she join a powerhouse team where the other people could actually compete with her, instead of deciding people will totally like her if she just joins a crappy team and tries to play at their level. No one's so good athletically that they can't find people who could challenge them a bit at least. This sweet, hapless talent plot is really not well thought-out. And I'm still finding her a really bland character. I need unexpected revelations, stat!
-Kid Hishiro is adorable.
-Aww, Kaizaiki putting his hand on Hishiro's back while she's having feelings
-And now she's really sounding like a grownup
-Childhood Friend Dudes hiding behind their bags
-Kaizaki's little melancholy smile watching all the young 'uns together helping each other
-"Lying comes as naturally to you as breathing. Your character is suspect"
-Hishiro's getting good at rolling with her cluelessness and making it work.
-Her speech to Kariu is waving flags of adultness, are we gonna get a reveal soon?
-Holding Kariu's face in both hands and saying "tell me your selfish desires," that's got to be the start of a few fanfics
-Poor Hishiro wondering why she's sitting between the crying girls
I really feel like these last few episodes have spent waaaay more time on the trivial high school conflict than was needed to get at the interesting stuff. But it looks like the next one will get to the point a little more.
