March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
Japanese name: 3-Gatsu no Lion
There's 12 episodes so far, it's slated to run for 22.
Genre: Slice of life, comedy, drama, technically it's a sports anime but it's about shogi/Japanese chess so it's not athletics,
From the mangaka who did Honey and Clover, if that means anything to you. There's also a manga version, and the anime does split itself up into the manga chapters, so you can do either and still be able to follow along to the exact minute with someone consuming the "other" version.
Wiki description:
"Rei is a 17-year-old professional shōgi player who lives by himself. He is estranged from his family and has scarcely any friends. Among his acquaintances is a family which consists of a young woman—Akari Kawamoto—and her younger sisters—Hinata and Momo—who also keep several cats. As the story progreses, Rei deals with his maturing as a player and as a person, while developing his relationships with others, especially the Kawamoto sisters."
I'm half-recommending this one.
The half I'm recommending it for is the cinematography and wild swings in feels. The show takes its atmosphere and visual metaphors very, very seriously, so you get a lot of artsy angles, chill music, and backgrounds that reflect on the mood of what's happening. The first 9 minutes of the first episode showcases that with high-budget first episode animation, but even though most of the rest is an as well animated as that, it evokes a similar style. The wild swings in feels, you can go from cute and adorable to a little nostalgic to PTSD to crippingly sad within minutes of each other.
The reason I'm only half-recommending it is for those who actually want a plot or a build-up to a climax, that's not here (as far as I know). It's just day-to-day living of the characters and some of it is adorable and some of it is funny and some of it is revealing sad things that happened to the characters.
Last season, this series came out every week on a busy anime day, like 10 different series that I watched would release new episodes. This one slowly wormed its way into being the one I looked the most forward to on Saturday, or the one where if I was tired or whatever that I'd save for when I could take in the experience better.

I've been rewatching the previous season with a person and the wild swings between crippling depression and chill comf are even more impressive the second time around

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
Watched the first episode
It's a bit slow, but this is a really charming show! I might try and read the manga to catch up with the anime so that if I get into it I can watch whatever of the show is still to be released by then as it happens.
- Spoiler:
-intro is so pretty
-the song sounds really familiar
-LOVE the way they're using the b&w style, and the flashes of underwater despair in the middle of normal things
-realllllly slow, but does a great job of creating emotional atmosphere
-March is a weird name for a convenience store
-The sudden tone switch the moment he steps into the girls' yard
-the cats
-how the fuck do Japanese people manage to make even curry pretty?!
-yiiiiikes, that's a dark backstory
-owl-cat
-frantic breakfast and the giant riceball totally uncontained by the tiny little nori
-"I'm an adult so I'm really busy!"
-Wait. WAIT. They run a wagashi shop?!?! They run a wagashi shop???? Why does this anime know my idyllic life dream?!?
-She did Spirited Away calligraphy, that's so cute!
-The grandfather complaining about the little one and then immediately going sparkly over her

- Spoiler:
Older Sister = Ultimate Waifu
Younger Sister = Ideal younger sister and not obnoxious shits like real little sisters are
Littlest Sister = Ultimate cuteness
I really liked the opening 9ish minute sequence where Rei is winning a match to promote himself to the next level but just dead inside because he's also wiping out his step-father in the process, and doesn't even say a word until the end of it
And then the wild swing from slow-roast despair into Enail's happy dream-life, that's the thing I like the most about how this show can go from A to B really quick

I'm actually three or four episodes behind myself right now because I got someone else watching it and we've been slowly watching the episodes
Also if you can work it, just keep watching, the manga doesn't have the adorable sound effects and the little girl voices and all that [/quote]

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
- E2:
-he's going to wipe the floor with his overdramatic wannabe rival in like 2 seconds, isn't he
-I wasn't expecting all the over-the-top rivals based on the first episode. It's not a bad thing, but it's a little jarring.
-while his opponent is over-dramatically losing it, it's a nice touch the quieter detail of his hand knocking the pieces off their squares just a little bit
-super-sweet wagashi-maker by day, sexy hostess by...well, also day, I guess, it was daytime a moment ago? It's almost too much perfect waifu-ness.
-holy shit, did she just manipulate the other player into not sponging off of Rei?! She's goooood!
-Dont' get any ideas, kid, she is way too old for you, she acts like a mother to you!
-his expression at the Obon supplies
-to be fair to him, Hina's giant, misshapen monster of an onigiri was pretty terrible
-what a sweet little scene of the grandfather with Momo, explaining Obon/death while she plays
-I love those cats
-the painted backgrounds are so pretty
The lighthearted segments of this show remind me a little of Yotsuba.

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
Yeah anyways, if you want to read to catch up, go for it, I just way prefer sound/voice acting/colour <.<
Episode 15/Chapter 30
Episode 15/Chapter 31
Episode 15/Chapter 30
- Spoiler:
- And there it is. The extreme daddy issues and resentment for Rei, but also a weird kind of love of him, because I guess he's what she wishes she was. The "broken glass that you can't fill up" stuff is amazing.
- Thaaaat Shimada/Goto match
- Shimada giving the crazy-fighting spirit eyes for not losing next time, dat Nikkaidou hero-worship
Episode 15/Chapter 31
- Spoiler:
- I fucking lol'ed when Gramps and the old guys were thinking back to their fiery youths and the girls didn't get it
- HOLY SHIT THAT SHIMADA/GOTO STAREDOWN
- Those fucking nerds in the bushes going "w-will that be me one day?"
- Teacher-san is the best x)
- Them war-drums and THUMPS as Goto and Shimada make their moves, why is Japanese Chess so dramatic
- Dat Shimada win. Body's ready for round 3

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
The contrast of emotions isn't as intense in the manga. But on the plus side, manga Momo has almost-constant sparkles and flowers emanating off her, which is adorable.
- Manga ch 5-6 (Episode 3:
-A piece of karaage dry on a slice of bread is a pretty sad breakfast
-Little kid Rei is adorable
-Huh, they did a nice job of taking the roundabout route to learning a little about Harunobu
-That panel of Momo pressing her face into Akari's apron is such a spot-on picture of a crabby little kid.
-The Obon nighttime scene was lovely
- Ch 7-8 (Episode 4):
-Squash croquette apples and a field of onigiri flowers?? This girl's hardcore!
-Awww, Momo thought Rei was her brother!
-But eugh that's an awkward argument for him to be present for
-Nice page
-Hina sobbing over her un-given bentou and Akari being sweet about it after all
-And then it tastes terrible
-Harunobu is Totoro?!?
-....Okay, that was a weird little segment

Dat moment when Rei realizes that something's not quite right with his emotional reactions

- Spoiler:
I fucking lol'ed at their freakout realization that they just destroyed Momo's idea that she had an older brother x)
- Spoiler:
-Nice page
You'll change your mind on that eventually <.<

In the anime, Momo looked like she was panicking for a sec but then BODORO and all was hilarious
Also Hikari's reaction to Nikkaidou's shape x)
If I could make some recommendations for specific watching at least, I would suggest watching Chapter 17 (second half of Episode 8 ) for how uncomfortable it is, and both Chapters 30 and 31 (all of Episode 15) because I think the anime aesthetic and sound will add a ton to the experience
My favourite chapter is probably 19 (second half of episode 9) but looking back on it, I think the point will get across strongly in written form too[/quote]

- I didn't mean everything's happy and nice there, it didn't exactly seem like it was a good memory, and I'm pretty sure that's the girl from the very first scene of the series, just that it was a nicely done page.

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
- Ch 9-10 (Episode 5):
-I went to pick up my nephew at preschool once. What felt like a gazillion toddlers turned and stared at me with these enormous eyes like they'd never seen an adult before. It was terrifying
-Had a younger sister?
-He lied about liking shogi to avoid being abandoned, that's pretty heartbreaking
-What a horrible kid Kyoko is
-Though, with her father's attitude, can't really blame her :\
-That central panel
-And he blames himself for it
- Ch11-12 (Ep 6):
-Momo's ideas of where she wants to go are just places she just went, that's so little kid
-This whole sequence is really well done
-I love his teacher, he's so terrible at being kind
-Hina is adorable worrying about him and trying not to seem like that's what she's doing
- Ch. 13-15 (E7):
-Rei getting all intimidated and using polite language to a middle schooler
-And then landing up totally connecting with him
-The cats
-Nikaidou's ultra-passionate scolding
-Aww, he's so happy Hina wants to learn shogi from him
-Nikaidou stealing the spotlight

- Spoiler:
- Poor excitable dog making Momo cry
- Holding Momo's hand and then PTSDing to holding his sister's hand
- I think lying about shogi was a huge gut-punch. We see this shogi genius and shogi's not even a true passion for him, it's a survival mechanism
- Kyoko's an awful person, but it's also awful seeing both her and her brother slowly fall apart as their father "chooses" Rei over them. That moment when the thing about the cuckoo is on and Rei goes "Ah, that's me."

- I love how much they're worried about feeding him and I'm just like "He's a middle school athlete, he just wants A LOT of something"
- BODORO getting a bout of anemia and trying to climb through the screen to pump Rei up x)
- Also now you must suffer with the rest of us

Yessss, exactly, this thing that the show is centered around that we assume has got to be some kind of mountain to climb but really it's just a little life raft in the middle of the ocean.
- Spoiler:

- Spoiler:
That whole thing was brutal. And the way he comes to recognize the damage it's causing them, but interprets it as him being responsible, not something awful that the father is doing to all three of them. You don't even get the sense he necessarily realizes that now even though he basically understands how the father ticks.
- Spoiler:
- I know, right?
Damn, that's even better than the manga!
- Spoiler:
- Teacher-kun is voiced by the same guy who did Tosaki in Ajin, so it's a bit funny to hear him trying to be nice and not doing it
- Spoiler:
For some reason, my brain's link went to the wrong place and I thought you meant Yashiro from Boku Dake, and was like brb, burning my computer, not falling for that nice act again
- Ch. 13-15 (E7):
- Also now you must suffer with the rest of us

Holy shit that's creepy. Maybe I'm not going to watch any of the anime after all

Re: March Comes In Like a Lion [Anime]
Did the anime for these two:
- Episode 8 (Ch 15-17):
-Oops, the last chapter should have been in here. He's even more jealous in the anime!
-Nikaidou is a terrifying but useful friend to have
-Everyone being so moved by Nikaidou's speech
-this sunset-lit scene is really pretty
-the way his voice goes flat around her, like he's just shrinking himself down smaller inside, and Kyoko acts like everything's normal and friendly.
"I'd stab him in his sleep. Because I love him"
-Really like the last page in the manga
- E9 (Ch 18-19):
-That match against the old guy was agonizing. And hilarious.
-D-do they do the cat song every episode?
-that one blue-lit frozen moment by the river, so pretty
-YES! OLD GUY'S NOT QUITTING, SUCK IT KYOKO!
-Matsumoto's reveal that he doesn't want to quit so he doesn't have to help around the house
