Alright, I have been peer pressured into watching this show, and I can't say I'm regretting it so far (2 eps in). 
- ep 1:

- -when Power started talking about the kitty cat I was like “this is some hack lazy heartstrings writing” and then I was extremely gratified when it was just her being a lazy hack liar
-but it’s cute and necessary for the character that she actually likes the cat, gotta have some kind of soft little underbelly
-I call BS on the cat surviving the stomach, but okay. It’s a show about a guy with chainsaw arms and a chainsaw dog inside him, I will suspend my disbelief.
-this show is so *fun*. All the action is so frenetic and stylish and you just lose yourself in it. These fights made me chortle with delight multiple times
-loooove the design on the leech devil. Who am I kidding I just love cool monster designs in general
-I love the fox too. I want to teach my dog to leap at something if I make that hand gesture
-Lol that Power is insanely gross, and lol that he will pivot from scrubbing her shit off the toilet to being paralyzed about her boobs in 0.3 seconds. Is this what being into boobs is like?

-Okay! Gun Devil! Let’s think about that instead. Devil of guns. Cool. Of course it’s from America. I like the gross veiny bullets.
-Makima is interesting to me as a "what's this backstory going to turn out to be" way. Her overt role as kennelmaster for the higher-ups has enjoyably sinister tones
-Love the clips of bystanders/witnesses describing the fight with gratitude and reverence, and then dude being like "HE SAID HE DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT ME"
-Full team assemble!
-DYING that his wish is.... a kiss
-This eyepatch lady whose name I do not currently remember is an interesting addition for Aki's character, pretty humanizing
-Ghost hand is cool!
-Freakout girl is profoundly annoying!
-Oh look, Uncle Berserk has come over for dinner
-Denji just going to bed in hell is some primo character development, this guy is very likeable
-I hope Freakout Girl is the devil here, posing as a hunter while sowing division, despair, and paranoia among the actual hunters till they all eat each other
-Wonder why this devil is so scared of Denji, maybe because he's so consummately present in the moment, and his dreams are so short-term achievable, that the concept of eternity doesn't even exist within his personal epistemology
-This is the first story arc that's felt a liiiittle dragged out, I could stand for them to be done with Infinity Hotel after two episodes, but it looks like we get a third

This is very much as weird as promised! Not entirely sure what to make of it, but it seems to know what it's doing, so I'm gonna try and keep up with it. Just doing one a week, though, so I won't be catching up to you, Werel.

-the number of body parts he's sold, and important ones, and for really fucking little money (shouldn't a testicle be worth more than that?? People generally seem pretty attached to theirs!), this isn't going light on the dystopia
-OP animation is definitely confirming the One Punch Man/Dorohedoro/a little Berserk comparison
-I kind of love the idea of tomato monsters, even if they look kind of like Behelits
-thrilled at the chance to eat a cigarette for ~1$ and says "itadakimasu" at it
-coughing up blood, this guy has the shittiest life ever
-an entire half of his dream is just eating bread with jam with his chainsaw dog, and the other half's just a girlfriend and presumably a video game system
-showing the road upside-down, that top-down view of the shimmering field at his dad's grave, this show likes to do disorienting but evocative visuals
-killing him while basically karmically paying for killing him b/c they became zombies
-willing Pochita his body when he dies so it can use it to have a normal life, that's the weirdest and most pathetic touching looking-after-your-pet scene ever.
-CHAINSAW HEAD bursting forth from a pile of zombies! This is as weird as promised!
-groooooosss, prehensile intestines
-"hug me" and she just immediately, warmly does
-this girl's highly suspicious and weird, but she's got jam and it's probably not a euphemism, he's gonna fulfill to his promise to Pochita
Actually, even if it is a euphemism, that's still half of the dream right there.

Yeah, this show has some bizarrely touching threads woven in to all the stylish gore and thirst humor, it’s what makes it worth coming back to for me (though I’d probably watch it just for the monsters and vibes, but the pathos really elevates it).Enail wrote:E1

Finished the rest of the season in one go several days ago, so, condensed thoughts and recollections:
All in all, I'm actually looking forward to season 2, the show was way more fun than expected, and I am somewhat invested in some of the characters, which is more than I can say for most shows!
- ep 8-12:
- This whole end of the season turned sad in ways I didn't expect.
I mean first, Makima finding a way to tactfully ease Denji's total bummer of a first kiss was pretty pitiful (the subversion of "is that something in your pocket" to "yes it is a physical souvenir of you sexually traumatizing me" was pretty lol). Himeno sober the next morning treating blackout drunk like a state she's used to waking up from, accustomed to having done something pretty bad she doesn't remember, was a pretty understated gut-punch about the toll this job must take on people, where binge-drinking to blackout is just another day. And the casualness which she pivoted right to lighthearted "okay cool, I'll get you with Makima, anyway, do you want to be friends" was also sad. Thirst show's thirsty parts get sad real fast!
And then they just lean into the sadness and amp it up to MEGATRAGEDY and straight up Eclipse the entire team, which, not gonna lie, was a pretty badass sequence. (As soon as the rows in front of and behind Makima on the train leaned down in their seats, and I went OH NO, I was also like "maaaaybe living in America makes me way too attuned to the preambles for gun violence, would a Japanese audience immediately react to that in that way?). Which also felt fucking weird during that whole sequence, seeing people react with shock and horror to guns like they were something as unknown and remarkable as a devil.
Himeno martyring herself felt really right for that point in the story, and the ghost design was cool as hell, and I kind of like the symmetry of the big bad being Yakuza dude's grandson, but... I'm sorry... katana man sucks. Not a cool design, just worse-chainsaw-man, and who the hell is legitimately afraid of swords these days?
Is the point that he's contracted with an obsolete and fairly weak devil? (doesn't seem like he was being set up that way.) Is he SUPPOSED to be a dumb not-scary villain to make Sawatari seem cooler? Cause it's working. (Snake devil: TERRIFYING, awesome looking, also surely must be one of the most powerful devils in the whole world if it goes by "raw number of human beings afraid of this thing")
Whatever Makima has going at the temple is juuuuuust fucking cooooool though. My best guess for her at this point is "(contracted with?) devil of mirror neurons/empathetic response/human intimacy and connection", which is legitimately extremely scary to a lot of people so she'd be strong as fuck, and being able to trade a human life + the use of a name to destroy a human life seems thematically fitting for that contract. Whatever it is, her power is cool as hell and I want to see a lot more of it. Also, I don't remember specific lines, but all the yakuza dudes freaking out when they started exploding had me guffawing.
I think Denji thinking "why am I not sad about Himeno dying, she was the first person who wanted to be my friend" hit me in the feels, that resignation to the fact that if even Makima died he'd be fine in a few days, got me wondering if part of this show is going to be a switcheroo on the concept that you have to be an emotionless sociopath to do this work, and he's actually a lot more susceptible to grief than his dumb teen brain thinks he is, or if he's just going to get colder and colder.
Denji and Power getting the shit kicked out of them over and over was enjoyable to me. They needed some humbling and it's good character arc stuff. I like them as a duo and the way Kishibe describes them is perfect. I kinda dig the new non-humans, shark fiend is just funny, violence fiend feels extremely weeby but I'm okay with it, and Angel Devil (as teen girl described him: "the femboy of all femboys") is a character I'm okay with learning more about in season 2. BUT: if people are truly afraid of angels, I want him to look like a biblically accurate angel, not a sweet little christmas card.
I LOVE THE FUTURE DEVIL, I love him, everything about him is delightful, and Aki getting free power in exchange for a cool-as-fuck death has me extremely excited for one of the protagonists to die. I can't possibly need to wait that long if he's only got 2 years maximum.
I think the Aki/Himeno tragedy arc actually provided some pretty good meat for a season-one closeout, the cigarette made me actually feel very sad, along with the flashbacks of their early partnership. Yay pathos!
The final fight(s) were pretty fun, Kobeni has some sick-ass moves and her shooting the old lady with her old gun made me, and I am curious about her contract(s), like, did she trade all her emotional self-regulation for insanely good physical regulation so she can do whatever she wants with her body? (She should've taken that contract, quit public safety, and been the best sex worker in all the land.) The nut-kicking contest as a wind-down was surprisingly wholesome, too. And now I get to spend a while wondering why Pochita said not to open that door.
All in all, I'm actually looking forward to season 2, the show was way more fun than expected, and I am somewhat invested in some of the characters, which is more than I can say for most shows!

-Aki putting gum on the woman who slapped Eyepatch's clothes, Aki confirmed just as immature as the rest of them
