Summer 2017 Anime Chart
Link
We're about 2-3 weeks out from the start of a new season already
I think if I'm going to game some more, I probs have to cut back from my 20 animes per season pace. I'm uncertain I'll be able to cut it down that much (I'm already at 5 in the "Leftovers" section, and they forgot to put Berserk in it, and also One Piece is still going, soooo 7 and I haven't even looked at anything else yet) <.<

Not much there. I'm pretty curious about The Reflection, although it looks like it might be pretty generic. Some kind of anime/Stan Lee team-up? I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

Re: Summer 2017 Anime Chart
Probably not a good thing, Stan Lee hasn't created anything relevant in decades, and they've given him opportunities to do so.
I have a long-ass list of things I"m gonna check out and I'm gonna pare them down to maybe 15 animes, so if anything interesting comes out of it, I'll let you know. Pretty weak season overall, though

Yeah, it looks very weak. Maybe there'll be something unexpectedly good, though, you never know.

Re: Summer 2017 Anime Chart
Yeah, it's a little better than it looked like it was going to be. The only things that haven't come out yet that I want to try out are the Stan Lee superhero anime and the "Young Marvel Avengers" anime, both of which I think aren't gonna be all that great (probably because season 2 of My Hero Academia is continuing and it's killing it as a superhero anime right now, and One Punch Man season 2 is gonna be out sometime this year <_<)

Hajimete no Gal
It's not good, but this makes me lol so much. Anything with the Madarame analogue yelling out "LISTEN UP VIRGINS" to his nerdy friends. Or yelling "DIE IN A FIRE AFTER WE'VE LEFT THE BUILDING" when they find out the MC successfully asked out a girl. This anime was made for like mid-to-late 00's me

Re: Summer 2017 Anime Chart
OKAY, time for the quality watch list now that we're 3ish episodes into the season
Dragon Ball Super, One Piece, Boku no Hero Academia, Re:Creators and Sakura Quest continue from last season.
I would be watching Gundam Twilight Axis but I'm simulwatching the Gundam stuff that has to do with Axis right now it can wait.
Potential Anime of the Season:
- Kakegurui - Compulsive Gambler:
This anime is batshit crazy. And lewd. Imagine that cute schoolgirls make super-ugly faces at each other while trying to use the latest gambling game to put each other in so deep of debt that they're considered housepets. And it's getting more fucked up as it goes on. Yes, Russian Roulette has already made an appearance.
- Ballrom e Youkouso/Welcome to the Ballroom:
This anime is not batshit crazy. It took the bones of a very successful sports anime (Hajime no Ippo: The Fighting) and put ballroom dancing on it. And it works. I don't even like ballroom dancing but somehow shonen fighting spirit makes it a fun ride. And it's really well styled and animated. One of the dudes had such lewd hip-swiveling during the latin-dance that I felt like a 1950s Elvis Presley censor going "That probably shouldn't be allowed on TV"
Gamers!
This one was made by one of us.
Made In Abyss
A girl and an amnesiac robot boy set on a journey down into The Abyss, a mysterious giant hole in the Earth filled with monsters and magic, to find the girl's legendary explorer mother, who is thought long dead but her recovered final note read "At the netherworld's bottom, I'll be waiting."
This one feels special. In the third episode, the characters look at the known map of the Abyss and rattle of some of the dangers (like water pressure/altitude, coming back up too fast can make you sick, and once you pass a certain point, your body starts acclimating to the point that you physically cannot return to the surface) and names of levels ("The Goblet of Giants" "The Sea of Corpses" "The Capital of the Unretured") and it just feels like a wondrous, fantastical fantasy adventure that an 8 year old would think is the coolest thing ever. I think it's based off a webcomic.
Mahoujin Guru Guru/Magical Circle Guru Guru
It's not anime of the season at all actually, but it wormed its way into being one of the things I most look forward to in the season. It's a remake of a Dragon Quest/JRPG parody series and it makes me lol and smile
Honourable Mentions:
Isekai Shokudou: It's like your Dungeons and Dragons party found a magical door that took them to your favourite restaurant and were "HOLY SHIT, THIS SUMPTUOUS SWEET AND SOUR SAUCE PLAYS BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE FLAKEY CRUST OF THE FRIED SHRIMP WAIT WHEN DID I BECOME A FOOD CRITIC"
Princess Principal: Steam-punkish spy games. The main character lies about everything, to the point where one of the characters who turned on her asked "are you going to kill me?" and she answered "No" as she plugged him full of bullets.
Koi to Uso: A harem anime where it's illegal to love anyone but your government scientifically appointed mate. Sometimes it's got interesting things to say about love and crushes and what love and science means, and other times it's an anime where the cutest girl in class confesses to a nerd.
Youkoso Jitsuryoku Shijou Shugi no Kyoushitsu e/Welcome to the Classroom of the Elite: Another one that started strong but may not keep it up. A school for elite students takes merit-based achievements to the extreme, and it's about how the various types of personalities fit in that kind of system.
Tsuruzure Children: This is adorable and the premise (anthology about middle schoolers I think confessing to their first love) probably wouldn't work with a full episode, so luckily this is a short
Youkai Apato no Yuuga na Nichijou/Elegant Yokai Apartment Life: "Would you rather live in the dorm rooms of a business school or would you rather live in an apartment building full of demons, spirits and exorcists. Yeah, me too." It's got something to say about warmth and family (and some kind of fucked up ways to say it).
Shokoku no Altair: A little Assassin's creed, a little politics/armies. I dig.
Clione no Akari: I'm still not sure. The first episode was depressing as ffffuuu because of the bullying, but we haven't gotten to the full premise yet (a bullied girl disappears and the friends she'd made go to find her) on account of it being an anime short
Dishonorable Mentions: It means they're not great and probably not even good but I'm still watching
Hajimete no Gal: Nerds and sluts collide. First ep was pretty funny and some of the conversations the nerds have about anything related to love and sex are magical ("I know/knew these people ") but there may not be enough here to keep it strong
Jikan no Shihaisha/Chronos Ruler: Generic anime about time travel shit.
Katsugeki Touken Ranbu (Time Travel THings): This is exactly like Tales of Zestiria The X was: beautifully animated, cool battles, boring as ffffuuuu plot. Made by the same company and with a lot of the same voice actors as Zestiria The X too.
Knights and Magic: A mecha model nerd dies and gets reincarnated in a fantasy medieval world where giant monsters are only held back by mecha. Much nerding commences.
The Reflection wave: It's badly drawn but well-animated, and I don't know why it exists. It's like they're trying to retroactively give Japan rip-off 1960s Marvel Comic Books in animated form

Congratulations bomaye, you did what was previously thought impossible and found a sports anime that not only I can stand, but I actually binge watched all three episodes as soon as I could--who knew this day would ever come
No but seriously apparently what sports anime/endless tournament arc shounen anime needs to keep me entranced is endless gorgeous dresses. SERIOUSLY THESE DRESSES THO. Like fuck, can it just all be endless competition arcs so that we can see ALL OF THE GORGEOUS DRESSES PLEASE. And hot damn, the animation too. I appreciate how much they also show the muscle needed to be a successful dancer, and the strain doing these feats of athleticism puts on the body. If you feel like committing to it, it might be worth starting up a thread for it so that I have a place to gush about ALL OF THE DRESSES but also like the joy of AGGRESSIVE HETEROSEXUALITY IN THE NAME OF BALLROOM DANCING (im talking 2 u sengoku) and the gorgeous animation.
I do hope that later episodes go more into the technical side of dance, as I always do like to come away from these weird niche theme anime (like Hikaru no Go or Yakitate Japan) feeling like I've learned something. It's like watching a nature documentary while stoned, its not really educational in any meaningful way, but it makes you able to spout random facts on a strange topic you'd otherwise know or care nothing about.
Also its clearly an amazing breakthrough in LGBT rights in Japan that we can have a butch lesbian character and instead of making cracks about how she's the way she is because she hates men (and then suddenly turning her straight at the end), instead all the time is spent focusing on her boobs. EQUAL OPPORTUNITY FANSERVICE YA'LL

It makes them seem almost like superheroes when they go from their regular slobby selves and turn into these almost unrecognizable beautiful people.

Re: Summer 2017 Anime Chart
Made in Abyss starts out with some clumsy infodumping and 'character talks to themselves b/c the creators don't know how to convey reactions by showing them,' and it feels pretty young, but the setting has charm and the whole thing gives me a little spark of wonder that's like watching anime for the first time, so I feel like I've got to give it a chance. The music reminds me a little of The Last Unicorn, too.

Re: Summer 2017 Anime Chart
Gamers was pretty funny, lots of recognition cringe, but they don't play up the cringe so much that it's agonizing. At points it felt pretty generic and tends towards using tropes instead of genuine feelings/motivations/people-ness, but they manage to get enough sincerity in there (over-narrating everything they're thinking in a panic felt real) that I think it'll probably surpass that.
I'll watch the next one for sure, at any rate.
Isekai Shokudou: Meh. A lot of generic story about generic characters, pedantically told, interspersed with rhapsodizing over food and random fanservice. Not going to bother with this one.
- E1:
-I don't usually feel that strongly about someone who's introduced to make you hate them in the first episode, but they did a great job of making Tasuku instantly dislikable, people who date someone they casually look down on are THE WORST
-King Koopa talks to her in keigo, wtf
-Silent Hot Sempai is a weird character, not sure about that one
-the heartwarming music and thoughts about friendship and then "no thanks, you guys don't play my kind of games"
-I'm with MC, that club would kind of kill the fun of it, too much pressure
I'll watch the next one for sure, at any rate.

This is the part that totally sold me. The sense of humour at faking-out making a club anime because a lot of loners don't do a lot in social situations is super-realistic. The setting and tropes are somewhat generic, but it's got the touches of a real gamer behind it

Hajimete no Gal Ep 4
I'm fucking crying laughing
I'm fucking crying laughing
- Spoiler:
So the most popular girl in class is a secret camwhore. She tries to ruin the main character's relationship with the gal-girl because she sees him as the obedient dog in her classroom life where everything is about her. But his fucking nerd-patrol friends figure it out and the gal-girl's friend kind of whispers it to the popular girl as a way to get her back off at the last second
As she's walking away defeated, she stops in front of the three guys in the loser brigade and is like "And you guys?" and they go "Yeah, we know... but don't worry because..." and then one of them pushes up his glasses and they say
Guy A: "we are"
Guy B: "supreme"
Guy C: "gentlemen."
tl;dr Japanese nerds m'lady too

- Made in Abyss E2:
-All the field guide to the Abyss stuff really hits me right. Like you said, Bomaye, there's something that feels special here.
-Reg's reactions to the things she's apparently done to test him
-reporting on his penis
-Man, I need a getting-things-down-from-high-shelves robot too!
-Ooh, she was born in the Abyss!
-She pulls the hat more firmly on her head before bowing and it falls off anyway
It's pretty young, and the pace is very slow and gentle, but I'm enjoying this!

- Made in Abyss E3:
-ewwww, snot that lasts an entire scene
-every time they show a map or go into the details about the layers it's magic
-the info balloon floating up into that balloon cap thingy
-what kind of weird disguise is that?!
-love the wharf's ramshackle buildings upon buildings. I can't put my finger on what about the setting makes it feel so special, the same elements could totally be unconvincing or uninteresting in another series, but somehow there's some real spark to it all
-they're off!
A lot of this show feels a little young to really get invested in, but that magic of adventure keeps me wanting to keep watching. Hopefully now that they're down into the Abyss it'll pick up the pace a bit.

- Made in Abyss E4:
-arm tent!
-the scenery!
-doesn't really seem worth bringing cups, why not just drink straight from the waterskin? I wish they'd show us everything in their packs, explorer pack inventories are adventure catnip
-it's a little uncomfortable having an adult checking a kid's genitals while he shouts to stop, this show seems really innocent but that still comes off weird.
-those overgrown, mossy windmills
I keep seeing comments that imply this show gets really dark later on. That'd be huge whiplash given how young it all seems, I hope that's not the case, or at least that they mean really dark relative to the start rather than on a general scale.
