Fall Anime 2017 Chart
Two weeks and it's new anime time
Link
I was about to make a list, but who am I kidding, I'm probs gonna end up sampling like 75% of it anyways
March Comes In Like A Lion... 22 more episodes
I'm jacked that Welcome to the Ballroom and Magical Circle Guru Guru are continuing.
Of particular interest to me are Mahoutsukai no Yome/The Ancient Magus' Bride, because I have some nerd friends who mentioned movies of it or something, Black Clover, which is apparently along with My Hero Academia considered the Naruto/Bleach replacements in the Shonen Jump Big Three (One Piece, having just celebrated the 20th Anniversary and is apparnetly only 70% done, has never left the big three), Ousama Game The Animation because that shit looks fuuucked up, anything that looks like a non vocaloid slice-of-life and ofc, Pingu In The City because apparently Pingu is anime

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
Pingu is anime?!?
Definitely watching 3gatsu, of course.
Interested:
Kujira no Kora wa Sajou ni Utau - the hand-painted background style is gorgeous, and the whole thing seems like a bit of an early Ghibli adventure feel
Shoujo Shuumatsu no Ryokou - cute slice of life post-apocalypse? I'm intrigued
Somewhat interested:
Inuyashiki - could be good, if it's well-written.
Mahoutsukai no Yome - I like dark fairytale-ish fantasy, so might be worth checking out
Ousama Game - Fucked up for fucked up's sake doesn't interest me but if it's got the right creepy psychological horror thing going on it could be interesting
???
Houseki no Kuni is an odd concept, but the gem-hair is weirdly compelling-looking. Sort of like watching a lava lamp.

When I read the premise of that and watched the preview, I said to myself "I bet Enail will go for this one"

To be fair, I'll probably just land up watching whatever you tell me to watch, though

King no Tabi is episodic but I think the first episode is at least worth watching.

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
Kujira no Kora wa Saijou ni Utau
I'm a million percent in. The pace is a little slow, but it's so fucking pretty and such a perfect, detailed world that you want to see all the little everyday things even if there was nothing beyond that but there's also mystery of the unknown to discover, as well as some stuff that speaks weirdly to some of my obscure interests. And I think the pace will pick up a bit now that we're situated in the setting.
- E1:
-that watercolour texture in the sky painting
-oh god it's so pretty
-a funeral is an interesting place to start a show, good way to get in some worldview/religion infodump without it seeming awkward or lazy
-wtf, there goes the coffin?!
-this is so pretty it hurts
-the other kids trying to stop him crying so the spirits don't get him is kind of cute, and a little creepy, b/c you don't know how seriously to take their beliefs
-"Five hundred and thirteen people live on this drifting ship, sailing the boundless sand ocean on the Mud Whale" This setting!
-the character designs are really cute and pretty
-he gets shiny for goggles
-he keeps official records that are more like a diary and writes emotion in while leaving it out, this is weirdly up my alley
-Everyone else cried too
-the tattooed fish leaping through the sand, this show is whimsical, mysterious worldbuilding heaven
-driftland islands with the evidence of humans but always empty
-the girl in the shadow of a ruin, surrounded by swords, with only one bloodied, what a great image
-ohshit, red magic. And lots of swords
-guess he can do magic when it really matters
-the way he's talking in retrospective without fully leaving the present, so it almost sounds like it's future him narrating but he uses uncertain language so it's more like he's just talking from now but weighted with the feel of what he thinks he'll look back on, xcept that he does use foreknowledge of a perspective that hasn't happened yet, a language of nostalgia and history outside of time
-"I lack that."
-bowel moles being pardoned because of a rainbow
-even the dark, depressing prison is so pretty
-the archivist is missing so much information
-this is getting pretty intriguing!
-and Ouni's magic is blue. I wonder what the deal is with the different colours
-Off to sea with the criminals!

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
I managed two more!
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
This has a really strong understated atmosphere and some interesting bits, but I'm not drawn in by the characters or what's happening that much. I'll probably at least check out another episode, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or not.
Mahoutsukai no Yome
Nothing terribly original here so far, and I don't love the angle they're going for or the characters. Might land up being a decent watch, though. I'll probably skip it unless I hear it improves.
Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou
- E1:
-choral music echoing in the empty industrial space over the sound of dripping water and the put-put of a little car, this is certainly atmospheric, even though I'm not altogether sure what exactly that atmosphere is.
-the hyper-cute character designs combined with a bit of a flat affect from both characters is odd, I'm not sure if it's intentional dissonance to hint at despair or something traumatic that's going to jump out at us or if it's just a slightly weird low-key style to the show. I feel tense but I don't know if I'm meant to or not.
-Okay, based on the feel of the damaged film-reel flashbacks and her waking up with tears in her eyes, I think it's intentional.
-boy, those animators really want us to appreciate the spit they drew
-it's nicely done, the quiet relief as they see the light, then it's blinding, and then joy and wonder
-Yuu is a pretty annoying character
-that night sky
-Snow-covered ruins, and the line of empty cans, and then the title card "War." This show does understated atmosphere well
-"Hey, you think a tank tastes good?" "Give it a try"
-little kids surrounded by nothing but the remains of war speculating so childishly on what war's even about, again it's understated but deeply sad, the way they're so intimately familiar with the effects and yet clueless about the people behind it
-ohfuck, the minute there's an uneven pack of rations the guns come out
-the way they don't even know how serious they are or not, one's just as surprised at the other really hitting her in a kid-fight way as when one pulled an actual gun on the other, they don't seem to get it because it's all part of the background radiation of a world they're steeped in and don't understand, it's pretty chilling.
This has a really strong understated atmosphere and some interesting bits, but I'm not drawn in by the characters or what's happening that much. I'll probably at least check out another episode, but I'm not sure if I'll stick with it or not.
Mahoutsukai no Yome
- E1:
- being auctioned off to a room of creepy masked people
-Deer-skull's design is pretty cool
-little water dragon-sprite thing is cute
-they think Elias Ainsworth is a sufficiently cool-sounding name for that guy
-mean family who hated her for having special powers + a Beauty and the Beast/apprentice setup, this could be a very tiresome, stereotypical fantasy romance plotline if not done well, I hope they've got something interesting up their sleeves
-the briar-weaving magic is cool-looking
-What is the deal with "Sleigh Beggy" and is it meant to sound as ridiculous as it does?
-magical beings being drawn to help her in ways that might not be helpful, that's got potential
-maybe taking a midnight walk with the creepy-eyed fairy with the mean-girl laugh isn't the best idea?
-tooooo many hands
-being called "family" once is worth going back for even if he throws her away
-calling her puppy all the time is pretty skeevy
-his skull face can do comedy expressions!
-he bought her in chains, she's his apprentice, and is supposed to be her family, and calls her his puppy and wants her to be his wife. Dude needs to pick one option, maybe two at most, combining all those things makes for a suuuuuper-skeevy Genji plan.
Nothing terribly original here so far, and I don't love the angle they're going for or the characters. Might land up being a decent watch, though. I'll probably skip it unless I hear it improves.

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
I'm only now starting to weave my way through last weekend's new anime, so behind x_x
Garo - Vanishing Line is like someone in Japan got ahold of the extreme '90s comic book scene from the west and went "this is cool" and made an anime about it.

Houseki no Kuni
Designs and visuals, man.
Designs and visuals, man.
- Spoiler:
- That villain monster in the first few minutes and how the gem people break and fall apart. Cinnabar's poison. Poor Cinnabar in general. "I'm just waiting for the day they come take me away." Feels like Dia's evil too.
There's also quite a bit of "Teenage girl legs/butt with thigh gap that could fit another leg in it" fanservice.

I'm gonna give it another episode at least, but I was kinda sitting there going "So when is something going to happen?" and it kinda never did. It sounds like we're missing a bunch of backstory that would've made a bit of it more meaningful too

Inuyashiki Ep 1
- Spoiler:
So, this felt extremely depressing and unsatisfying until the last minute or so. I was disappointed when he didn't kill those kids, but then he exposed them and ruined their lives, so that was cool, and then when he cried because he felt a feeling, and that felt good enough that I'll check out Ep 2

Imouto sae Ireba li/a little sister's all you need Had a very trash (on purpose beginning) but then they played a question game called "Turtle Soup" that I've never heard of and that game seemed fun as hell and it was fun watching them play it <_< (Also a surprisingly touching ending)

I wouldn't have watched this if you didn't gush over it. Looks pretty, interesting world, a few mysteries.
I'm seeing lots of hints that the author/creator is a big Naruto fan too

I wouldn't have watched this if you didn't gush over it. Looks pretty, interesting world, a few mysteries.
- Spoiler:
I'm interested in what the "mainland" is and why the Unmarked don't tell the Marked what they know, especially because the main character mentioned it would've been useful if earlier generations left behind more records, which seemed like a "God dammit, Great Grampa " thing to say but takes on a little more interesting tone now that we know the people who grow old are holding out for some reason.
Also why emotions are so tightly regulated and why they're so worried that the Lykos girl they found is emotionless.
- E1:
-guess he can do magic when it really matters
- Spoiler:
He did earlier before she tried to stab him too when he ran inside the window to hide, he just doesn't seem to have any control over it, which is why they called him "The Destroyer"
I'm seeing lots of hints that the author/creator is a big Naruto fan too
- Spoiler:
- Naruto wore a pair of goggles in the first episode/chapter similar to the one the main character did
- Naruto characters use "chakra" and that's close to the main character's name
- The bad boy rival is a genius at using the magic skill of the world just like Sasuke
- The sand theme in general mirrors parts of the Naruto character base (Gaara, the Sand Village etc)
- The main character has a hard time controlling the power of his abilities

Gonna drop Ousama Game. That's two edgy/sorta violent animes I've dropped this season (the other one was Evil or Live). The characters weren't great to begin with, but then the plot twist was just bad and the entire time I was going "so did everyone forget the guy who just bled to death in front of them?"

Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou/Girls Last Tour 2
Man, this is both really chill and kinda fucked up at the same time
- Spoiler:
- They can't read the language on the power station, but they can read and write, so the disaster happened a long time ago
- Using the other one's shoulder to keep the rifle steady because her hands are shaking so much, god damn, small details
- They can count the number of baths they've had since starting the journey on one hand
- "Did we eat today?" Mannnnnn
- They had to burn all of Grampa's books. The things they talk about so casually that are sad as fuck
- That apology picture
- "I thought humans were the only living things out there." Wow, we haven't seen any animals at all before this fish o.O
- So did livestock and animals die off, which lead to wars over food?
- They don't know if they can eat it or not
- I never realized, that's a mutli-tier'ed/multi-level city
Man, this is both really chill and kinda fucked up at the same time

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
Yeah, the sweet purple haired girl
- Spoiler:
was ordered to have sex with another guy, got upset about it because she's a virgin who wanted to give her first time to the main character, tried to get the main character to have sex with her first (he declined), and then personality-changed into a sociopath, decided to have sex with the guy right there, dragged the main character into the forest where he objected, screamed to make it sound like he was attacking her, watched him get beat up by the other guys, and then tried to convince a girl whose orders were "text "Die" to a classmate, they will die" in order to kill him
What the fuck

Ancient Magus Bride Ep 2
Oooo, it's going somewhere now
Oooo, it's going somewhere now
- Spoiler:
- Her mom hanged herself after saying "I shouldn't have had you."
- Things got a little more interesting with Angelica. Instead of being a creepy guy who randomly just bought a girl to be his bride, he's an idiot with bad tact who randomly just bought a girl to be his bride
- And then the crystal flower garden.
- A catholic priest is asking a mage for assistance?
- The Church has some kind of regulatory ability over Elias?
- Calling back to Druids in the UK
- I hadn't realized Elias had covered his face while talking with the Priest
- SUDDENLY DRAGON

Re: Fall Anime 2017 Chart
Inuyashiki
Another one I'm not too sure if I want to continue or not.
- Inuyashiki E1:
-an all-English intro song, and the English isn't terrible and hilarious, what's even the point
-little note on the Japanese - in the opening animation the two hiragana of the title that turn into balls and fly around for the rest of the sequence are the "nu" and the "shi" of "Inuyashiki," and then when it shows them at the end, the order's flipped so it's "shi" + "nu," and "shinu" means "to die".
-it's a pretty nice-looking house, ungrateful children!
-I hope we're going to get to some plot soon, I'm not enjoying following this unhappy guy around his miserable life where everyone's horrible and hates dogs
-that's a pretty casual and callous way to tell your patient they've got three months to live
-his family's too busy being horrble to let him tell them he's dying, this is the most depressing anime ever
-fucking robot arm hits the dog?!
-And shoots out vomit? This is not a good robot arm so far!
-teenagers killing homeless people with fireworks and bats for fun, is this a world where everyone under 50 is just awful or what? Old people's revenge story?
-well, those are some useful evil-young-person life-destroying abilities he's got there
-good luck turning your life around, one non-terrible person in this world!
-crying because he can still feel
I didn't much like it for the most part, but the more emotional ending bit did have enough impact that it might be worth watching more, but I also don't really want to sit through 95% Everything's Horrible Except the Dog for 5% Robot-man Feels Happy He Can Make a Difference every episode. I don't know.
Another one I'm not too sure if I want to continue or not.

Yeah. I don't think I could watch the anime if every episode is like that, but that episode was more like a long origin story before it got to the real meat of it than anything
