Winter Anime 2018

Post by bomaye on Sun Dec 24, 2017 8:56 am

Chart

Not a lot happening in the regular section. There's a few sequels to things that I watched in earlier seasons that I may not hit up because gaming more means I should really watch less of the so-so anime. I'm interested in the second season of Nanatsu no Taizai but I'd need to watch the first season since it's supposed to be one of the rising shonen right now. Same with the Basilisk sequel, though that's less of an issue because it's an actual sequel to the original Basilisk media and not a continuation of a manga series or something like that.

Or the non-sequels, Kokkoku probably looks like the most interesting of the bunch.

Most of what I'll watch this season is in the "continuations" section: March Lion, Black Clover, Garo, Magus Bride. I'm happy there's slice-of-life shorts in a school setting of the Chito and Yuuri from Girls' Last Tour.

Now the OVA/ONA/Special section. Is where interesting things are happening. B: The Beginning looks interesting. Devilman looks ridiciulous and sounds like an old-school series I should be into. A Reigen-themed Mob Psycho 100 OVA sounds wonderful, RELIFE IS GETTING A CONCLUSION (and it looks like the webcomic run is over so it should be the legit ending) Shiny/thrilled

Yay, more 3gatsu!! Shiny/thrilled  And it's cool that Relife is going to get a proper ending! I'm not sure what to think about another season of Magus Bride, though, I'm enjoying it well enough but I'm not sure if I like it two seasons' worth.

Kokkoku looks pretty cool,  but I think that's about it. Which is fine by me, I don't really want to try to keep up with as many shows as this season.

If you're gonna watch less of Magus Bride, I may just stop doing commentary on it. It's sort of got all the right pieces set up to be something great but doesn't commit to any of them 100%, so it always feels like they're pulling back or holding back somehow.

So I just watched Devilman Crybaby Ep 1 (it's Netflix so they released it all at once) and I've seen some shit. It's absolute horror-gore edgelord trash and I think they were going for a retro '70s look but it looks like it was just cheaply done in Flash, but strangely smoothly animated and the cinematography is sorta bad and sorta good.

It also felt old-school in that sex and violence are happening everywhere for no logical reason. Sorta just an exploitation movie for people so they can see a nipple, but we live in 2018 and porn is freely available on a box in your pocket now.

Edit: Ah, part of the reason is that it's a '70s manga that was more or less exploitative, it actually is that goofy and violent in its original form

I'm def gonna watch Episode 2.

I sorta like how people frozen in time become part of the "furniture" of the fight scene. Like that guy standing there smoking the whole time. I wonder if any of the guys they knocked over while frozen in time are gonna wake up and suddenly feel the pain of it or if they're just generally safe until time is unfrozen.

Yuru Camp might be the most chill slice-of-life I've ever seen. The characters just talk about camping, wander around the campground taking pictures of the scenary and bask in Mt Fuji's glory, and the one character doesn't want anyone to interrupt her alone-time and makes disgusted faces whenever anyone suggest she join the outdoor activities club. Zero dramatics, zero feels, just chillin.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was incoming silent

I may not stick with it though, it's a chill food show but wasn't as chill as Restaurant From Another World a few season ago.

Exercising quality control to free up time for other stuff kinda sucks Sad

I probably won't, it's more just the exercising of pseudo-responsibility on something Uh-oh

Though there have been a few animes in the past that have grown on my after like 4-5 eps, so I miiiiight miss out on those, but oh well.

At the moment, I'm at 19 anime, 10 of which continued from last season and 1 is an old one I'm watching with someone else. There's still a few episode 1 stragglers to come out yet and a few that I'm not 100% in on Lurking/sketchy

It literally feels like a gaping void in how I spend my time. I only have 7 episodes of anime waiting on me and that's just because I probably checked out another 7ish episode 1s and 2s today Lurking/sketchy

OK, sorry to barge in on a conversation but has anybody else seen Killing Bites. I mean, wow, between this, Darlin in the FRANXX and Violet Evergarden, I can't decide which had better start this season. I mean this is basically Bloody Roar: the Anime. I am also expecting a lot of honey badger memes. Also, Karakai Jouzu Takagi-san is beyond adorable, and citrus is...well, it is. I'll also be watching Takunomi this season and maybe Beatless, IDK. Smile

I had the same feeling from Killing Bites.

Something I was wondering about Darling in the Franxx

Spoiler:

002 was kept being referred to as "she" but she used "boku" which as I understand it is the male version of referring to yourself in Japanese?

Spoiler:
I didn't really pick up on that "boku" thing. But you're right, it is a masculine pronoun. Time will tell if it's of any significance to the plot. Did you also think that Naomi was going to jump from the platform?

About Killing Bites, those bits with the narrator coming in and explaning the nature of the "animal side" of the characters was pretty...IDK, weird. I mean, it was like "Oh, so you're enjoying this X-23 vs. Leomon fight? Here, have some Animal Planet. Laughing

Spoiler:

Yup. I read no other meaning behind her throwing her stuff for him and then leaving quick, so now I'm not really sure of the meaning behind it unless she jumped already and they were just worrying about her pod when she wasn't in it

It was such a Japanese thing. "Here's this lewd and violent furry fight, but let's take a step to the side for a moment to make sure you learn something in the meantime."[/quote]

Yup. I also hope that if this anime gets English dub, the "Honey Badger is a badass" guy will do the narration. Him, or Sir David Attenborough.

But what kind of animal was that last lady? I'm betting on porcupine.

Kokkoku 2

The mechanics of this power continue to get more interesting and the Handler/Herald is such a cool monster design. I sort of wish the characters weren't so generic or that had a little more depth to them.

Spoiler:

Sorta fucked that the Uncle thinks the kid died, I'm wondering if he figures out what's happening or even gets himself killed by a Handler accidentally trying to help him somehow
