Paranoia Agent

Post by bomaye on Wed Apr 04, 2018 3:26 am

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wasoranimigoto

I know someone who likes things involving bad things happening to people and likes things involving mental issues, so I was like "Oh hey, I know just the Japanese cartoon." So now I'm simultaneous internet watching Paranoia Agent again for the first time sincceeeeeee might've been high school but I feel like it was just after that. 15ish years?

I don't remember too much about it other than Maromi and Shonen Bat being things. And the intro music being a visual representation of a nervous breakdown.

Watched 3 episodes already, dunno whenever we'll see the others. Forgot how well-animated it was, how much nakedness is in it(the slow-loading porn image, holy shit rofl ) and how much it builds to the thing that happens every episode

Specific favourite moments

Ep 1

Spoiler:

Maromi casually standing up and learning how to walk O_O

Ep 2

Spoiler:

I think it was this one, where the Detective asks Maromi because he's frustrated and Maromi is "O_O"ing at him

Literally OH SHIT'ed when Ichi was hoping Shonen Bat would come KO palm-tree kid and then WHOOSH, and then after that the end of the episode leaves you wondering if Ichi actually got KO'd by Shonen Bat or if he was just imagining.

Ep 3

Spoiler:

The person I was watching it with went "This is some Fight Club shit" when Hiromi/Maria were street fighting each other in her head and then Shonen Bat zooms in on her and she's got what looked like clown makeup on

I need to finish mega fanservice NHK sometime, after ReLIFE and March Lion and catching up on 1,500 missed episodes of B5 and whatever other crap I'm doing with my life Nod

I admire your optimism thinking you're still going to catch up on B5 at this point, Werel, I gave up all hope ages ago! Wink

I've been meaning to check this one out for a long time, I've liked Satoshi Kon's movies, maybe this should be the poke I needed

If you finished the first season, then you're only about 38 episodes behind Wink

DO IT ENAIL DO IT Shiny/thrilled

This is easily one of my top 5 TV shows ever, probably even without the "anime" qualifier. I'd watch it again right now or anytime. It's goooood stuff and if you like Kon you've got a 99% chance of loving it.

Same, though I was reading the manga, so I'm not sure where my stopping point falls on the overall arc of the show...? It's been a few years so I'd probably need to start over anyhow.

Episode 4

That was certainly...

Spoiler:

... more fucked up than I remember it being o.o

The cop getting Yakuza'd and then turning into a mugger and implied rapist was fuuuucked. I also didn't remember him catching Shonen Bat, so I laughed when he get back up, hit him with his shoe and then beat the shit out of him, even though the rest of the episode was not so funny

(Also the Pink Mask, sorta Maromi-like?)

God, I loved that the first person to overtly summon Shonen Bat onscreen couldn't even properly get attacked, he had to go and be a cop about it. Laughing

And get ready for more ramifications of the disturbing parts of this episode but much worse in a couple of eps silent

Ep 5

Spoiler:

NERDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

I sorta noticed the over-arching theme of people trying to live a certain way and it just not going their way no matter what they want. Shonen Bat is living as a delusional RPG hero but hurts real people, the security guard wants to live by the manly manga code but turns into a cowardly thief and probable rapist, the multiple-personality woman is living both a quiet and good and bland but also a wild and crazy life, the redneck kid wanted to open up and talk to everybody after he left his original school for bullying, the super-cool kid wanted to retain his #1 position because he believes his life should be about being the #1.

Ep 6

Spoiler:

Grossssssssssss, it's the security guy/robber's daughter and he was spying on her (also telling the call-girls to call him "daddy" Ewwww! ). And then their house gets mudslided, Shonen Bat wipes out both her and the first victim at once, Maromi is O_Oing.

Nooooo Granny got washed away (but survived somehow!)

Just watched E1. Definitely excited to watch more!

Spoiler:
It's clear right away this show is different, the character designs are exaggerated to be almost grotesque in places but also they're so specific and careful it doesn't feel unkind, the animation is so smooth and full of little motions that are so realistic and genuine (shoutout to the little convulsion of almost crying but then not when she falls, and to the swinging-around way the stuffed animal walks), even the sounds feel really real and solid (shoutout to the chalk on pavement!), and it makes it so much more unsettling and persuasive when things get weird. And the way it's constantly moving in and out from the feelings of people up so close you're not sure if you're in their heads or not, to undifferentiated masses all making excuses on the phone till they blur together into static.

Kind of makes me feel like a lot of other shows are just phoning it in.

Paranoia Agent is a completely unfair standard to judge other shows by. You can't measure a 5-year-old's drawing of Spiderman against a Klimt. Laughing

The animation quality at the very least is something you don't really see in anime anymore.

E2
Spoiler:

-there's something hilarious to me about a 10-yr-old going around like "I'm the coolest of the cool" with his sparkling smile that he practices in front of the mirror
-as soon as he hits on the idea the other kid spread rumours about him, his tone becomes a little scary in a way you can't quite put your finger on, the intensity of his hatred, even before things start going distorted. This show's really good at shifting into an uneasy mood.
-the other detective suppressing his laughter
-Usshi stands up for Ichi when photos of him bullying him get out. What a nice kid...maybe a little too nice? Uh-oh
-and Ichi still takes it as an evil plot. We're really getting into the paranoia side of things.(me too, since I just wondered that myself Lurking/sketchy)
-the detail of the range of expressions he goes through standing looking over his rollerblades in the trash
-that grin on his face when he sees Usshi get hit, jeez, this kid
-Shounen Bat shows his face and Ichi sees himself, fuuuuuccckkkk.
-The talking stuffed animal telling her something's just her imagination  innocent
-Kind of creepy/suspicious the way Maromi doesn't want her to think about the past or if she's seen the kid before
-Crap, what was written in the chalk there before, is the number different??!
-Going from the number ichi to kids calling Ichi's name
-sitting in the dark watching himself on video talking to himself about how cool he is, this kid's going downhill fast Uh-oh
-and then the visuals go nightmare
-the way he's so relieved when Shounen Bat appears and then when he calls out to everyone to see it's not him, no one's there Shudder

Not that I can figure. Though there's like a million ways to spell basically any name, so it could be something a little less obvious that's beyond me

E3
Spoiler:

-You know, the old equation-writing guy's hair is pretty similar to Shounen Bat's. And no one else's really is
-holy shit, she's the tutor
-i-is she having a conversation with herself on the answering machine?? Or is she pretending to be some other person who really exists when she's dressed up as Maria
-so Shounen Bat attacking Ichi did actually happen. Seems like the attacks are getting worse, too
-I guess it's split personality, then. Must be hard iust keeping up that many jobs, even aside from the psychological difficulty
-the sheer  Neutral / confused of that pause when he asks her to marry him like he's asking her to make some more tea
-packing away her other life
-oshit, she gave them her home number. I guess Maria wasn't ready to stop existing yet
-the phone rings and she's already Maria when she picks it up Shudder
-taking photos like it's a real wedding/getting married like she's the real(only) her
-I was half-expecting her to have a Maria expression or the beauty mark or something in the second photo
-"Shounen Bat set me free"
-holy shit, she's kidnapping herself
-her make-up smeared face as Shounen Bat pulls back his arm to hit
-who did they arrest?

Ep 7

Spoiler:

That build up to Shonen Bat killing (!) the faker, and the implication that the faker and Shonen Bat both attacked the two boys at the same time

Also that slow descent into madness (or maybe he was already paranoid and was just hiding it, I sorta believe that intsead) ending with Detective nerd broadcasting the truth over radio waves Nod

I was getting the feeling that the imagery was trying to say Detective Nerd lost a wife and/or child (a lot of the hyper-focusing on the amnesiac daughter and some of that church stuff) but I wasn't sure I caught on to what they were trying to put down
