Summer Anime 2018

Post by bomaye on Thu Jun 21, 2018 8:15 am

The Chart

About two weeks until we're ready to roll on the new season

Generally shooting for 12-15 anime so I have more time for backloggery. I finally finished my 200ish episode catch-up on One Piece (I read the stuff but didn't watch the anime version, then I stopped reading the manga and started watching the anime again instead, now I'm all up to date on everything), starting on my 100ish (now 94) episode completion of Naruto Shippuden (no spoils plz, I've mostly avoided them) Lurking/sketchy

EndlessA. Pokemon
EB. One Piece

Continuing 1. My Hero Academia Season 3
C2. Captain Tsubasa 2018
C3. Layton Mystery Detective Agency

1. Black Clover (Continuing but not listed)
2. Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan Season 3
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Collecting:

Boruto
Lupin III Part V
Persona 5 The Animation
Steins;Gate 0
Baki New Grappler OVA
Golden Kamuy OVA
Gintama
Overlord III

I'll take a closer look at things later on, I'm gonna sample most things eventually. Back Street Girls looks stupid as fuck so I'll definitely pay attention to that. Angolmais looks way up my alley, what the fuck @ Banana Fish, what the fuck @ Happy Sugar Life.

Time for more hilarious horrifying cannibalistic giants!

Other than Attack on Titan, there isn't a ton grabbing me, a lot of things I might otherwise be interested feel really videogamey in a bad way even just from the description. Angolmois is the only one I feel much call to check out - that's an interesting time period and Mongols are always cool. Other than that I don't think there's much that I'd bother with unless I get a rec.

Tsukumogami Kashimasu sounds odd, but it's an interesting concept too, and I like small life details in historical times, so I might check it out or at least watch the trailer.

Massive wtf @ Happy Sugar Life.

Seems like Gegege no Kitarou is continuing too so

1. Black Clover (Continuing but not listed)
2. Shingeki No Kyojin/Attack on Titan Season 3
3. Gegege no Kitarou
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

Might as well keep it. Yokai stuff is becoming a bit of a weak spot and Kitarou was what originally popularized Yokai type anime in the first place.

So on the latest episode of GeGeGe no Kitarou, Rat Man (a half-human half-Yokai who is always trying to set up hustles to make money) sets up a hustle with Manyudo, the Japanese gatekeeper of hell. Manyudo turns people into diamonds in return for eating their souls, and Rat Man takes their smashed-up diamonds and offers them up for an all-you-can-bag diamonds shop for $10k. When they run out of diamonds, they run a raffle where people are offered an even bigger prize, he shuttles them out to a cave, and then Manyudo turns them to diamonds and eats their souls, thus replenishing the diamond stock.

Rat Man gets kidnapped by gangster type men who run the worldwide diamond trade who are angry that he's flooding the market and lowering the price and demand to see his secret. He tries to set them up to be turned into diamonds but only one of the gangsters gets taken down and the other points a gun at Rat Man's head and gets everyone to calm down. The others make an offer: keep producing diamonds for them, allow them to control the worldwide diamond trade and everyone makes money. Rat Man wonders how they'll find enough people, and the gangsters say no biggie, they'll just hire Miners, use children who've been sold by their parents, ship in refugees from civil wars (it actually shows them bringing in a shipping container of people).

By the way, this is a Sunday Morning children's cartoon.

(Rat Man eventually has a change of heart and summons the good guy and then they defeat Manyudo and everyone gets their souls back and the gangsters are revived in the same room with everyone they set up so everything lives happily ever after)

Chio-chan Tsuugakuro is also funny as fuck, and funnier than Back Street Girls. I'm straight-up adding it to my list.

It's about Chio chan's hilarious adventures while walking to school. Such as being late because she stayed up all night playing Assassin's Creed and then using Assassin's Creed parkour to get there on time. Or when she's being greeted by one of the cool kids and isn't sure if she's actually greeting her or some unseen person behind, decides to throw herself into a pile of trash just so she can sneakily check behind her to make sure

I checked out Chio-chan Tsuugakuro, the throwing herself into a pile of trash rather than decide whether to assume the cool kid was actually greeting her was fantastic. And also my first thought may or may not have been "damn, I wish I'd thought of that before." Lurking/sketchy

I also fucking lol'ed

Spoiler:

- when she used the rich guy's face (also the rich guy's lines in general, like singing a tune to himself about how he makes more in an hour than a commoner makes in like a month)
- when she triumphantly emerged from the Love Hotel assuming the guy was just being a creepy pervert and he's like "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS YOUNG GIRL DOING WITH HER LIFE"
- when she tried to say good morning to the track-star cool kid but she'd already run too far ahead and instead it was four fucking nerds all going "Oh shit, is she into me?"

4. Chio-chan (Weird adventures walking to school)
5. Holmes of Kyoto (Antique Road Show: The anime)
6. Seven Sense of the ReUnion (Online MMO where a dead girl is somehow still alive)
7. Hanebado (Well-animated badminton)
8. Back Street Girls ( rofl )
9.
10.

That's about where I'm at for this season right now, could still drop a few of them if the hook doesn't maintain (Back Street Girls feels like the joke will stop being funny soon, but who knows). Probably a few more Episode 1s need to debut too

Kyoto Teramachi Sanjou no Holmes.

There is an antique shop in Kyoto's Teramachi Sanjou shopping district. High school girl Mashiro Aoi unexpectedly runs into Yagashira Kiyotaka, the son of the shop's owner, and ends up working part-time at the shop. Kiyotaka is called the "Holmes at Teramachi Sanjou," and he and Aoi solve odd cases brought to them by various clients.

Angolmois 01

Mongol invasion time. Also it's set in the same time period and events as Ghosts of Tsushima

Spoiler:

- We start with a samurai dude wondering if he fought his best and then having a billion arrows fired at him. We've already gotten off to a good start
- Oh god, samurai dicing everyone up <3
- Tsushima, the video game
- Mongol Invasion of Japan in Tsushima. Wiki'ed the historical event and oh boy, this is going to get ugly <.<
- He lit the fires so they could see in the dark Wink
- Sound effects on this show are pretty weak
- I recognized the name "Yoshitsune" from Drifters which also used historical figures Sad
- A white, blonde Mongol? Or a false flag attack of some kind?

Yeah, the joke of Back Street Girls holds up a little bit but not over the course of a 24 minute episode. Just gonna replace it on the list w/ Angolmais

Uh oh, like 3 or 4 episode 1s just came out Uh-oh

Grand Blue was pretty funny, mostly because of the exceptional hilariously-animated-reaction-faces and nudity jokes

8. Hanebado (Well-animated badminton)
9. Sirius The Jaeger (Vampire Shit)
10. Grand Blue (College Swimming Club Hijinx)

There's still one or two more anime that have to episode 1, so if those end up being good, I'll figure out what to drop from the list. I could find a reason to drop everything below Angolmais if I needed a reason to (probably Hanebado, I'm more watching partly for the fanservice and partly because the animation is something else, but there was already blips of bad animation in episode 2 so I'm assuming they're not gonna be have the budget to keep the quality up going forward so that may be the easiest one to straight-up drop)

How is Seven Sense of the ReUnion? I usually like that kind of premise, but reviews I saw said it was all pretty generic.

It's generic. Most people described it as a mix of Sword Art Online and something else that I forget. I just like the way they've been presenting it

There's an old anime from 2002 called .hack//SIGN that was a really good example of the "MMO" genre with a similar premise that you might like if you really want to try something in that genre, been awhile since I've watched it.  There's also Sword Art Online but I haven't watched that yet (it's on the list!) and people say it turns into a Mary Sue later on.
