Upcoming video games? Empty Upcoming video games?

I'm starting to plan my Christmas shopping (hey, I sometimes need to track down hard to find items with long shipping times, so early is necessary!) and thought maybe you all could help me a bit with my husband. Smile He's an avid gamer and I usually get him at least one game--we have a deal that he's not allowed to buy any in November or December so he can't accidentally get one I'm getting him. Our taste in games is pretty different, so usually I browse the "top games of the year" lists to see what's most anticipated coming out those months, then check reviews once it's out, then get whatever seems to his tastes that is reasonably well received. But here I can get direct recommendations!

Platforms: Playstation 3, Wii U, 3DS
Fave titles to give you an idea of genre preferences: Shadow of the Colossus, Zelda games, Mario games (mostly the main line, not the spin offs), Bioshock, Portal, Metroid games, GTA games, Metal Gear Solid games, Spelunky

Any games you're anticipating in the next couple months that you'd rec I check out/keep an eye on?

Upcoming video games? Empty Re: Upcoming video games?

Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U is an easy one, then. Releases on 21 Nov. (Of course, it's gonna be so popular and cool he might beg you to get it before Christmas as an exception.)

The Assassin's Creed series is kind of GTA-like (I haven't played GTA but I understand the flavor is similar; one of my friends affectionately calls AC4 "Grand Theft Boat"). Assassin's Creed: Unity will release on 11 Nov. and it'd be toward the top of my list if I was willing to spend money.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is another AAA that's getting a lot of hype, even around here, and for good reason, but it doesn't seem to line up with the genre preferences you mentioned. As RPGs go it's pretty action-heavy, but it's still more of a character-building story game than a mechanics-driven "challenge" game.

There's a new Metal Gear Solid game coming, too, but it won't be released until 31 Dec. I guess it's an option if you think he will be okay with getting a preorder receipt instead. Wink

Thanks! SSB is definitely a good one for him. Assassin's Creed--he has a couple of those but I know he's said he never finished one of them, and he didn't get the most recent previous one in the series, so he's not super enthusiastic about them (though obviously a reasonable suggestion as something he might like! Smile ). Dragon Age, he doesn't seem to have any prior titles in the series so that's probably too risky. And I'm sure he will want the new MGS but I prefer presents he can play with right away. No doubt that is where Christmas money will go!

I actually reminded him of the buying-ban last night and he admitted he's only bought one game for the Wii U since getting it (Nintendoland) even though there are many already out that he wants--he really doesn't like spending money on himself--so that opens up a lot more possibilities!

Has he played MGS5: Ground Zeroes? If not, it's $20 for about 2+ hours of gameplay, so it might not be worth the price.

Do you think he'd enjoy 'The Last of Us'? How about the Uncharted Series?

There's also Journey, Tomb Raider and Watch Dogs.

If it's MGS and it's out, I'd assume he's played it. Smile He has The Last of Us and the Uncharted series (and likes but not loves both), I don't think he's super big on Tomb Raider, not sure about Journey, so I'll check that out. Watch Dogs was on my list of possibilities after a quick scan of this years "big" titles--have you played it and would you recommend from that?

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Upcoming video games? Sweatdropplz Lol, I don't even have a PS3.

I've seen the playthroughs for Watch Dogs (http://gameslikefinder.com/watch-dogs/) and it seems very similar in style to GTA. You play in an open, interactive world where you get to manipulate the environment to suit your goals.

Other suggestions:
Red Dead Redemption http://gameslikefinder.com/red-dead-redemption/
Batman: Arkham Asylum http://gameslikefinder.com/batman-arkham-asylum/
Batman: Arkham City http://gameslikefinder.com/batman-arkham-city/
Sleeping Dogs (similar to GTA) http://gameslikefinder.com/sleeping-dogs/
Far Cry 3 http://gameslikefinder.com/far-cry-3/

My own game interests are very narrow, so sorry if I'm not much help.

Ooh, okay. So, Zelda: Hyrule Warriors is a thing! It lacks much in the way of exploration or puzzle-platforming gameplay, but there's a lot more monster-slaying and I feel like there's still some feeling of technical challenge that he might enjoy. Depends on whether he likes the franchise solely for its trademark gameplay or has some willingness to experiment. Wink

Since you mentioned Spelunky, I assume he's not opposed to 2D platformers. Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze is an amazing action/challenge 2D platformer. The difficulty (and corresponding depth of gameplay) admittedly takes a while to ramp up (the mantra "this is made for children" is necessary to enjoy many first-party Nintendo games) but it's worth the wait when you're exploiting every possible advantage as Cranky Kong and the boss still kills you. Grin Seriously, great game. Huge fan.

Super Mario 3D Land is another obvious one. The level designs somehow felt novel while still featuring some obvious callbacks to previous installments in the franchise. I'm so happy Plessie the Plesiosaur is a thing now. As in most Mario games, an experienced player will just breeze through the "main" game, but there will occasionally be an interesting secret or two that gets you to revisit even the early levels. And of course, the post-game bonus world ramps up the difficulty quite a lot. The co-op can be fun but is also occasionally frustrating; it's the kind of thing where you can easily mess each other up if you're not constantly communicating intent. My sister and I went through the whole game as a team, and there were far more opportunities for us to accidentally kill each other than to help. I think at first it didn't even occur to us to talk things out since we usually kind of read each other's minds anyway, but after we found ourselves restarting for like the 15th time because some silly trap or other had faked us out and killed us both, we kind of sat down and talked out a plan for how we were going to get through that level. That can either add fun (like it did for us) or take it away, depending on your respective dispositions. Wink

I'm told the Wii U version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is actually really good, but I've already played it on the PC so I haven't checked it out myself. It's a third-person stealth/shooter game, like MGS, with a cyberpunk/transhumanist theme.

Wind Waker HD is almost exactly the same game as Wind Waker; gameplay's smoother and more convenient in some places thanks to the Wii U's gamepad and the addition of the magic sail, but there's still no real freshness to the experience. It'd be an A+ game if it hadn't already been released on the GameCube many years ago.

Um, that's all I can think of at the moment. Hope it helps.

I can second the recommendation of Arkham City and Arkham Asylum, which I assume are on PS3. Arkham City is especially good.

It's older (last year or two), but has he played Dishonored? Steampunk stealth game with supernatural elements and really tight gameplay.

There's GTA V, of course. Watch Dogs is working well for me in the same style but I think its Next-gen only. In fact, most of my suggestions are going to be next-gen. Once you convert over, keep an eye on No Man's Sky. No firm release date yet but I have high hopes for it.

I enjoyed it, but I didn't like the ending's cinematics. In fact, the whole art style didn't sit well with me.

It was fun the first time through, though.
