Prog Rockers? Empty Prog Rockers?

Post by MetropolisFan Mon Oct 06, 2014 11:07 pm

Is anyone here into the noisy chaos and beautiful bullshit of Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal/Djent, Heavy Prog?

I'm talking about Tool, Porcupine Tree, Karnivool, The Pineapple Thief, Riverside, Animals As Leaders, Meshuggah, Steven Wilson, King Crimson, Soft Machine, Yes, Rush, Dream Theater, Opeth, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd (technically they do count, I guess), Coheed & Cambria, The Mars Volta, Jethro Tull, anything, everything, whatever sounds weird and ultra pretentious.

Sorry if this thread has already been done before; I'm new here! Drop a line if any of these bands turned you on at any point or even if you can't stand any of them or if you've never heard of them; I'm up for chatting about all things Prog!

And of course, if you want to share music (prog or not), lemmehaveit; here's something I've gotten obsessed with very recently -

My people! Person... Whatever, yes, Prog Rocker here. It's even in the screen-name!

I probably err towards the Rock side rather than Metal/Djent, but there's stuff in there I love too, like Baroness.

I haven't heard much of The Pineapple Thief, but that was pretty damn good. Personally I've been trying to check out some foreign language prog and stumbled upon the Italian Prog scene and a few other neat little gems like Nektar and Ars Nova.

Have some Nektar!

Yes and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull are doing shows at the end of the year and I've scored some tickets for both.

Indeed, they are on the prog spectrum for sure. I need to give them a better shot myself - I have all their albums from my sister and never sat down and given them the time they deserve.

Also, funny you mention Karnivool (I just noticed it), MetropolisFan - I actually know the guitarist. He's a cousin of two of the guys in my Dad's band in possibly the most fraudulent sounding connection since 'I know a guy in the CIA, but he'll kill us if I tell you who he is!' but it's true. Yesss!! Other prog rockers exist; I'm not alone :'(

Mmm, that was some tasty Nektar (heh heh, I couldn't resist). Thanks for the recommendations; I've heard a lot about the Italian prog scene, will be sure to check it out!

And yes; Tool is quite possibly one of the best prog bands apart from being one of the best trolls in the world. Hope their legal stuff gets handled soon so that the new album comes out...

Also WHAATTT. I obsess over KARNIVOOL every single damn day; is it safe to ask which guitarist though? Hoss or Goddard? They're both badasses!

Have some Ars Nova (90s, Japanese, all-girl, synth-focused prog!) to try out too:

Yeah, it's safe; it's Hoss. I can't wait until they tour again; they all live in Perth and I'm way over in Melbourne, hah. Definitely one of the better modern prog bands, but they don't seem to have as much success in Australia as everywhere else.

You are LUCKY! I'm all the way in Chicago but if I could, I'd MOVE to Perth just to see them on a regular basis.

Will check out Ars Nova; here's some 'djent' for you -

Count me in. If only Prog Power USA wasn't the week after DragonCon every year I'd have a chance to go. Can't afford to be in the ATL for 10 days straight though.

OMG other people like Progressive Metal! Other than my Girlfriend I don't know anyone else who likes Prog, though being form the UK there aren't many prog bands that I know of. Allow me to share some of my favorite bands and hopefully other people will find some new bands they might not have heard of!

Periphery - heavy, modern, almost futuristic, and progressive sound that includes polyrhythmic patterns and soaring melodies.

Skyharbour - heavily layered ambient guitars and vocal harmonies.

Erra -  Five piece progressive metalcore band hailing from Birmingham, Alabama that formed in 2009. Their namesake comes from Akkadian mythology and represents mayhem (something that comes to mind when giving them a listen)

Corelia -  Progressive metal band hailing from San Diego, California

Ever Forthright - Artfully fusing modern jazz, progressive metal, hip-hop, electronica, and other styles of music into an auditory landscape!

I'll stop there for now otherwise I'll be posting for ages, however if anyone has any other recommendations similar to these guys let me know!
