Please help me find a new skill Empty Please help me find a new skill

I'm looking to find a new hobby/skill to take up and am currently unsure as to what to pursue.

A little context. My main passions are physical training and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I normally work out every day and train BJJ four times a week or so. I'm pretty damn fit and a pretty good jiujitsu player, if I do say so myself. A large degree of both my self-esteem and self-image derive from my physical competence. However, at the moment I'm injured (dislocated rib) and going absolutely stir-crazy with nothing to do. I like to read novels and play games but they don't satisfy my need for something to work on to improve myself.

I realise that in the long-term I'll need to address this issue of my self-esteem being tied to my physical capability (even if nothing else ever goes wrong, I'll get old one day). In the meantime however I'd like to try and take up some new non-physical skill that I can apply myself to, but I'm not coming up with anything that really catches my interest. You'd think with all the different things that people can do and learn out there I could think of something but I'm honestly drawing a complete blank.

Would you have any interest in trying the other side of novels or games, writing a novel or learning to program?

Maybe learn AutoCAD or whatever it is they use for 3-D printing? That is what I would do if I had down time.

So I know this doesn't address the question of finding other senses of self worth other than physical capacities, or the question of a hobby, and I also don't know what your physical routine involves, but do you do any yoga or pilates? I have a friend who's really into BJJ like you, and when he got injured and had to take a break, he took up yoga as a low impact way to continue gaining feelings of physical competency, through improving flexibility. Also, this helped him avoid getting injured while sparring as much as he used to when he returned to training.

But beyond that, I'm definitely seconding Enail on maybe trying writing as a new hobby. I remember from your OLD profile that you have a good appreciation of fantasy literature, have you ever had any interest in developing ideas or worlds of your own? Also, it's something that you can do while you're bedridden too!

Is going on light walks an option with a dislocated rib? I imagine part of the stir-craziness is your body going "YOU'RE NOT DOING THE THINGS I'M USED TO"

This is very true. If you are used to being active a sedentary lifestyle is tough. I had some broken ribs once and they do limit a lot. You would not think it, but the muscles between your ribs move a hell of a lot. I was able to walk and do recumbent exercise bikes, but YMMV

I'm in this boat with you. My best suggestion: learn a new language (why not Portuguese?) That's always an interesting (and potentially employable) skill to have.

That's what I'd be doing myself, if I weren't constantly studying for career oriented things (which have, honestly, been a major drag on the old self-esteem, lol. )

Conreezy and Reboot have already beaten me to it!  Learning Brazilian Portuguese would be an interest that could complement your BJJ.

This is assuming you don't  already  know it of course!

But if you did want to learn it there would be lots of articles and websites devoted to BJJ in Portuguese.

Having studied a Romance language (Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan etc) would certainly speed up the process.  If not its grammar is still generally similar to English.

Just an idea.  I don't think choosing a hobby/skill is a majority vote kind of thing.

Learning a new language was going to be my suggestion, too.

Also cooking or learning a musical instrument, which have been mentioned, as well. So...nothing new to add.

A lot of good suggestions guys, thanks.

My first thought initially was to try and get back into music. I used to play trumpet when I was younger. I was pretty good. I thought I could get it out again and see what I remembered.

I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out the snag in the plan of playing a breath-based instrument with a rib injury.

Maybe I'll try piano again? I never got to the same standard as I did with trumpet (and quit much earlier in my life) but I wasn't too bad. Already knowing how to read sheet music is good, means I'm not starting completely from scratch again even if the muscle memory in the fingers is gone.

The language idea is good as well. I might even be able to get work to pay for a proper learning program.

As for yoga/pilates, not really feasible for me I'm afraid. Right now I can't really do any sort of twisting motion, or really anything that engages my core muscles. Even just leaning forward feels like my abs are trying to pull my rib out of its socket. Give it a few weeks and I should hopefully be able to get on the stationary bike at least, or something else that keeps the upper body basically still.

My piano muscle memory is still there but it's strangely patchy at the oddest moments. Like arpeggios and most scales are there if not at speed, but I'm missing chromatic scales and for some reason my left hand likes to think G is low F Side-eye . Some things feel easier the second time around though. Good luck!

If you're still looking for suggestions I like hand crafts like origami, basket weaving, pottery and knitting--trading a good result for a bit of patience sates my need to be doing something productive, but they might be too stationary for you. Learning a language though sounds like an awesome idea.
