Early Access Games [Discuss] Empty Early Access Games [Discuss]

Hi Everyone,

I'm curious about peoples experiences with early access games?

Have you had any negative experiences with an early access game, or have they mostly been good? Have you ever bought a game where you preferred it's alpha state compared to the finished product?

Personally i've only played 2 early access games, one was RaiderZ, I ended up in the alpha/closed beta and loved it, but as soon as it went live I would constantly lose connection or suffer game breaking lag, probably because the only available servers are in the US and i'm based in the UK.

Second game is Crypt of the Necrodancer and OMG does this game just keep getting better and better every time they update it!! I love seeing the development process this game goes through and hopefully some of the community suggestions get added into the game.

I backed the space sim Elite: Dangerous on Kickstarter, and got access a bit into the beta, and I've been playing around with for some months. I don't know a lot about games and even less about development, but I've enjoyed watching the game grow, and I've had the opportunity to take in the game, where at launch it might have overwhelmed me. There have been things that hasn't worked, and some frustrations, but all for a good cause. The thing that's bothered me the most has been some of the discussions in the game forums, where I lurk... people seem disproportionally upset when things aren't exactly how they want them. But then, many of those people have been dreaming about this game for about twenty years.

I've bought several games in early access. Some of them like Plague Inc. Evolved are at a stage of playability where I could theoretically be happy with that as a complete game, some like Rebuild: Gangs of Deadsville have a nice entertaining game in the current state but could do with a few more features and a few fewer bugs, and some like Maia don't even resemble a passable game (and in a few cases like Maia, don't look like they ever will).

I've also bought several games not in early access. Some of them like Startopia have provided hours upon hours of entertainment, some like Age of Wonders I didn't find particularly enjoyable but I believe that's more because it turned out not to be the type of game I was looking for, and some like Democracy 3 turned out not to be that great after all.

All in all, to me as a player, early access just means I need to do a quick check to see what stage the game is at in addition to the usual checking of what people have said about the game.

I use to be pretty against buying any early access game since they tend to be on sale less and it's kind of like paying to test the game. Recently however I been more okay with it. If an early access game was on sale and got good reviews (for example The Long Dark was on sale during the Steam Christmas and got overwhelmingly positive reviews) I should treat it like any other game and buy it. There's been a few early access games that were on sale and I bought but I made sure to look at the reviews and I have enjoyed them. Even the glitches tend to be minimal. For example I played quite a bit in 7 Days to Die and while there was a few weird falling through the world things the game was very playable.

Goth, I have actually heard of the Crypt of the Necrodancer and have it on my wish list (waiting for it to go on sale).

I think in general as long as you check the reviews then buying early access games aren't a problem.

So, I don't have a lot of time in my life right now. I'm especially busy. I still want to play video games, but it isn't like I have a lot of time to play a game multiple times.

So I have a choice, buy your game early access where I pay to beta test it...and then probably don't play the finished version. Or I can just wait until your game is finished and play it then.

I did by The Long Dark (which is early access) because it was on a great sale...but I'm not going to play it until after it is actually finished.
