Re: Entertainment Joys
- Spoiler:
Oh no, it's not a bad thing, I really enjoyed Alias (the original comic) and very much am going to watch the rest of it. I just knew from the original source material that this was going to be a certain brand of brutal even compared to Daredevil, and oh god, they embraced and added to it. My skin crawls almost every time the Purple Effect or Killgrave are on screen

Right? I thought I knew how that episode was going to turn out...and that was not how it turned out. Intense stuff.
It probably didn't hurt that I watched that one right after 7 and 8, and my skin was still crawling.

Re: Entertainment Joys
That episode was so fucked UP on so many levels.
I've never seen anything remotely close to that kind of set-up. What the FUCK. Psychological thriller KO punch to the novelty center
- Spoiler:
That scene where Killgrave is standing on his end of the cell with "Help Me" across him while his parents who experimented on him as children are preparing to trigger him so the woman he raped could stop torturing him and get the confession she needs to save Hope.

Re: Entertainment Joys
Got on the Jessica Jones bandwagon and holy cow, yes, that show is good at emotional gut-punches.
Had creepy-ass Kilgrave nightmares after watching.
- episodes 1-3:
After Hope shot her parents and was going all goofy-dramatic-Joker-face I was like "too comic book." And then they made the excellent decision to not leave it there and instead take it to the truly brutal moment of her coming to and screaming. That's basically when I decided to stick around and watch the rest of the season.
Trish is going to get someone murdered, and it's not going to be herself. Near-choking-death is not the end for somebody who insults and then tricks Kilgrave. God I don't want to see what horrible things she is going to bring down on someone, but also I very much want to see
Also: those upstairs siblings are surely going to be used by Kilgrave somehow. And it's going to be horrible. Because it's probably not enough for this show to feature an abusive twincest relationship, it's gotta get worse.

Jessica Jones spoiler
Also, it's not often that a comic cover makes me stop and go "I need to check that out" but Issue 1 of Superman - American Alien did it
Jessica Jones spoiler
- Spoiler:
They hid one of my favourite comics villains in "Will" Simpson. Watching him slowly lose it and going "WAIT, ARE THEY DOING NUKE" was AWESOME

Jessica Jones. Basically.

- So can we talk about how this show is basically Real Life? I had to stop after Episode 10- I will finish it, it's cathartic, but I was getting the feeling that Mr. Celette was watching a different show that I was and i needed time to process that. Still working on processing it. For him, it's "Oh wow creepy superpower I can't believe they went there" and for me it's like "Oh look, this is the realest real life horror movie I've ever seen." If someone has seen better, let me know, but this is the absolute best, most true to life depiction of rape abuse and toxic male privilege I've ever seen. It's like everything I dreaded and feared and had to wade through when it came to dating. All the shit that gets thrown at you as a woman walking down the street and the attitude of "It's mine because I want it" that so many too many young men display. It's also an incredible depiction of a survivor's journey, one that rings very true, so I don't want to give in to Kilgrave and his ilk by focusing on him and not on her (that's what he would have wanted, you know) but I don't think the story would have worked if they hadn't been willing to give Kilgrave so much depth. In fact, the times he ISN'T using his power are his creepiest. That's when he reveals the mentality that drives men to do everything from tell women to smile on the street to rape them. Where he objects to the use of the word rape because he doesn't like how that sounds. Where he says he didn't mean it, so it couldn't have been rape. Where he says he took her to a fancy hotel so it couldn't have been rape. I knew, I knew right then, that a woman developed this. She'd just copied down what someone had told her. Why? Because someone's told me that. Someone's told my friends that. It's part of the script, basically. I'd love to know what guys are thinking when they watch this show. I'd also love to know if other women are like "Well, this is biographical, isn't it?"

Re: Entertainment Joys
Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans is sooo fucking good. Episode 10 had not one but two heart-breaking origin stories and one of the best transitions into a god-tier outro I've ever seen.
It's weird to say this because the draw is usually "giant robots fighting each other", but the camaraderie on the ship and the family is the real draw of the show, and the giant robots fighting each other makes you HORRIFIED that someone's going to die (and someone's going to die, there's no way they're not setting up for something horrible to happen)

I honestly don't like SNL, even when it was "good" in the 90's and early 2000's. But man do they hit it out of the park sometimes.

I was holding my sides laughing at that commercial. It fit's a couple of friends I know. Nothing wrong with being able to poke fun at yourself and what you love.

I have never thought robots could be so cute until now. This picture does not do justice on how cute BB8 is, the way it moves in the film!

BB8 is pretty cool, and has piqued my interest in perhaps attempting to build a Mindstorms ($$$!) or Aurdino ($) robot. The marketing is strong with Disney.
Perhaps it's because I am old and a curmudgeon but I prefer the snark of R2-D2 and the cantankerous Chopper.

I've yet to see it, still, but I still mean to. The only live-action TV/movie Marvel thing that doesn't interest me so far is Deadpool....
That being said, I've heard about it from a lot of friends by now. And I would say generally women seem to want to talk in detail about the particular nasty ways in which the horrors depicted in the show are Too Real, while men seem to talk more broadly about the show depicting some horrors and being "like Daredevil".

I recently started watching Daredevil after I saw the trailer for season 2. I guess after I finish DD, I'll watch Jessica Jones then.

Got another 1-2 Gundam whammy. The outro to the latest Gundam - The Origin is the sex and I had low expectations of Gundam Thunderbolt because it was "just" a webseries but it turns out it's high production values and jazz music in space <3

It makes me really happy to see so many older women in sci-fi/action-y movies lately. It's like, hey, there's my future, I was looking for that!

Wrestle Kingdom a few days ago.
The second to last match was incredible. "No way it tops that."
And then holy shit, somehow it does.

Re: Entertainment Joys
I've been dragging my feet about watching Bojack Horseman for at least a year because the animation didn't particularly appeal to me (I'm not opposed to watching animated shows, but that particular animation didn't strike a chord). The first few episodes were a string of "amusing animal visual reference, sarcastic joke others would find funny but I don't, celebrity joke, oh this is one of those shows where everyone's a jerk but I kind of like those sometimes, amusing animal visual reference."
Then we got to some of the stuff about Bojack's past in entertainment and then the arc with Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter, and I realized that the show actually takes these characters really seriously and has some interesting things to say about guilt, your feelings about other people's feelings and relationships, and entitlement. Definitely watching more.

It's always really nice to revisit a thing you loved ten years ago and find that it held up so well that you love it more now.
Paranoia Agent's one of those. When I was 19 the intro with lyrics gave me shivers, but at 29 it makes me full-on cry.
(sorry for crap video quality, it's the only version I could find with the good English translation)
