Should we allow images in the signature line of posts?
Images in signatures
We've been asked about images in signatures (and sorry for the delay in responding - for faster response, I recommend making a post in the Forum News, Rules and Community subforum, as it's easy to miss in a general thread!), and we thought this was something that everyone might want a say in, so I'm opening up a poll.
If the vote is in favour of allowing images in the signature line, there definitely will be some limits. The specifics are still to be worked out - and if you have an opinion on limits you want to see, please post! - but the general idea will include:
-No content that would be inappropriate or even vaguely controversial in any other part of the forum
-Nothing NSFW
-A size limit in both pixels and dimensions (probably fairly small. If you have a size limit preference, please chime in!)
-mods have discretionary rights to remove the image from a sig at any time, for any reason.

Do you mean nothing animated, or just the file format?

Aw, but I like gifs.
Anyway, there's a forum I go to where their Signature Image restrictions are:
-Up to 3 images
-Images up to 800 x 250 pixels
But I like gifs. Simple gifs.

One forum I'm on has pic sigs only show up on a person's first post on that page, so you don't have to see the same dog doing backflips a dozen times.

I don't think that's within my power, I'm afraid.

I've never seen a forum have that feature before.waxingjaney wrote:One forum I'm on has pic sigs only show up on a person's first post on that page, so you don't have to see the same dog doing backflips a dozen times.
Anyway, can I ask Suika about the "no animated gifs" thing, is it mainly because of the distraction factor or are your concerns primarily to do with file size?

I voted 'no', though if there are no animated images, there's one image per signature and strict height restrictions, it'd probably be alright.

Alright, it looks like the No's have it. Sorry, those of you who were getting excited about putting enormous animated gifs in your sig lines, the official decision is that there are to be no images in the signature line.

Awww, I was at least hoping for headache-inducing optical illusions.
