Forgot the word for...
So here's a question for all you smart people!
This isn't a fashion question per se. It's a terminology question.
What do you call getting an item of existing clothing updated/altered/revamped/remodeled ( or doing it yourself) for fashion reasons?
So not to fix a tear or something; purely for fashion reasons. You know, maybe adjusting the number of buttons on a coat or the length of a dress. But for example, adjusting the length would have to be due to a change in fashion/style as distinct from a change in one's body size or to adjust an item recently bought off the rack.
I should know. A student asked me but for the life of me I can't recall it. Too many years living overseas I guess.
All comments welcome!

Cool. Thanks for the instantaneous reply!
And that covers a general "makeover"?

No. A makeover encompasses more than just clothes. It's hair and makeup and shoes and accessories. A makeover is called a makeover, there's no fancy term for it. Alterations are made to clothes.

Thanks OneTrueGuest! I was using "makeover" euphemistically. So alteration is the confirmed winner.
It's actually the word I first thought of, so my memory is not as bad as I thought!
Thanks again OneTrueGuest and Barretts_Salt!

Alteration does cover changing something so that it fits you, it doesn't need to be due to a fashion choice. I think it basically means changing the garment intentionally for any reason, not just to mend a tear. It also covers doing that when you just bought the item. It still means the same thing as it does when you use "alter" in any other sense - to change it.
I'm not sure there is a word that just covers aesthetic reasons to make changes to an article of clothing.
