Love that chapter! The author has such a precise sense of the characters and how nerds do social dynamics, it feels real rather than something rounded up or smoothed off by being retold through stereotypes or other representations.

Yeah, precise is a good word for it--each of those people feels like somebody I've known, or at least a very plausible person I've never met.

Although Kousaka still doesn't quite feel like a person so much as a genderflipped version of the ubiquitous girlfriend character whose defining attributes begin and end at "hot and bubbly." He feels like the least developed and most trope-y of all of them, which actually works nicely to shore up the impact of Madarame/Kasukabe interactions by contrast.

But what was he wearing under that skirt...? Suspect

No, I see Kousaka as more of a comedy-enabler than a character in his own right, which is something we see a bit more of as the series goes on. I find it strange to have a mix of complex characters and 2d comedy ones in the same series, but it also works strangely well.

Kousaka is what Madarame looks in the mirror and doesn't see

I thought it a little bit of an odd choice...  That's funny, though, 'cause we do have a silent face. I'll check that out and change up the punctuation.

I read the first part, but I haven't gotten into the second, as I've heard that it isn't as good. I have yet to watch the anime at any rate.

I'd say it's not as good, but it still does most of the same things right and gives the same kinds of feelings that made the first part enjoyable.

It was a while ago, but I think I liked Madarame and Ogie the most.

Part 2 still has a lot of Madarame-stuff, Ogi's more a secondary character though

So I've heard. I'm not looking forward to harem hijinks though.

Me neither, I'm gonna get jelly Laughing

Saw a copy of the first issue in a Half Price Books for like $2 this weekend but didn't buy it out of nerd shame in front of my cool friends. I'm a total Ogiue Cool

Shame, Werel, shame. The Genshiken would want you to embrace your nerd-dom. Disapproving

WRT the harem hijinks, the author isn't just throwing in a harem as an anime cliche, he's also playing with the characters being people who process their emotions through anime cliches. It's not not harem hijinks, but there is more to it than that.

Ohhhh, I'm so glad Kuchiki-kun finally got his little moment of heroism and a few moments of well-deserved development. Heart

The scene where Ohno coaches Ogiue through her yaoi shame led me down the internet rabbit hole all the way to the existence of "butler cafés." Laughing

edit: God, this chapter 38 pep talk is actually helping me with my own shit

I tend to underestimate Ohno as being kind of one-dimensional, but now that you point that chapter out, she's actually the driving force behind a lot of the real Genshiken spirit. She's the only one who really never hesitates to embrace what she loves.

Kuchiki, though, I never underestimate. Usually those shameless pervert characters I find a little pointless and cliched, but Kuchiki brings such sincerity to it that it makes it hilarious to me.

And the idea of her as a self-styled Kasukabe fits even better. Pay it forward, Ohno. Each one teach one [to embrace their marginalized interests unabashedly and to grow into their fullest selves by means of pushing, prodding, and teasing]. Ruthlessly dog Ogiue to show Sasahara her filthy otaku shit (I can't wait to find out the backstory for all that shame). Ohno's getting some good screentime in chapters 39-40!

There is a filler episode of the anime devoted entirely to an Ogiue yaoi fantasy involving the Genshiken boys that only sorta-happened in the manga that probably needs to be watched at some point Wink
