White dress recommendations
Hi all,
My Trinidadian friend is getting married (she is one of my reverse order friend - kids, then house, now marriage so that her family can throw a party) this summer in Trinidad. She has asked the guests to wear white, which I take it is kind of traditional there. Rooms and I are going but neither of us own white clothes.
For me: Any ideas for something white and casual? What shoes would you wear with white? EDIT: And WTF should I wear under it if I do something light/cotton?
For Rooms: Do you think he can get away with light tan pants and a white shirt? He really has no desire for white pants. What kind of shirt do you think?

Re: White dress recommendations
For you: Do you know how formal this wedding is going to be and whether it's going to be outside? A beach wedding suggests a different dress than a formal indoors one. White shoes are a pain. Very light beige ones work fine with white, as do shades of tan and brown. Looks more modern, and you can actually wear them again. Undergarments close to the shade of your skin - white under white can create an interesting effect under bright lights, in the Midwestern sense of "interesting."
For him: I don't know about these traditions, so this is only a guess, but I'm thinking many men will have a hard time finding pure white pants and that there will be others wearing light tan.

It is in an interior village. She said casual and comfortable.
Thing is, from what I know of Caribbean culture men in all white is kind of normal dress for big events like weddings, christenings, etc., so 99.99% of the guests already own all white outfits

Ooh, gotcha. I'm going to defer on the question about what he wears, then. I'm heading out now, but I'll keep an eye out for dress links later today.

Re: White dress recommendations
Just wondering, are you looking for a dress? Or shirt and skirt? It sounds like blouse and slacks might be a little difficult--less so for women's pants, but there isn't a lot in white.
Also if you don't want to, you don't need to supply your exact measurements, but do you think you could give me some sense of your height/body type? Like would maxi/longer dresses work for you, or drown you out? Or would the just above the knee dresses that work on my super petite form be too short for you? I know you said casual, but is your style based around simple cuts and not much frills? (Just trying to resist the just-turned-21 urges to be like "well that's nice... but it clearly needs MORE LACE AND TULLE!!!")
I love looking at pictures of pretty clothes/dresses online, especially more so if it's for someone with a different body type than mine so I'm not constrained by only that which would flatter me. So if you wouldn't mind giving me a bit of guidance, I can totally see a couple of enjoyable hours of procrastination coming out of this!

Re: White dress recommendations
I am built like this:
But with wider hips and a shorter waist. Like between my ribs and hips you can maybe fit a finger? Possibly one inch.
I tend to favor A line and sleeveless, since when my arms are covered I look heavier
EDIT: I am 5'4" ish and prefer dresses because they tend to make me look less...blocky. My thighs are so heavily muscled that parts are weird on me.

Re: White dress recommendations
For the guy:
Light khaki pants. Light brown/burgundy/blue/green button-down shirt. Brown shoes.
But with white pants in a Caribbean setting, he could do this:
I sure would.

Re: White dress recommendations
Thing is everyone is supposed to go all white. I see it a lot with guys in all white like at Carnivals, Quinces, Easter in Hispanic churches, etc, sort of like this so I am pretty sure everyone will be all white. I do not think it occurred to my friend that all men do not own white pants or want white pants
Shirt wise he is thinking this since he is Hawaiian and all

Re: White dress recommendations
Okay, so along with sleeveless, I'm also guessig generally nothing strapless or had a horizontal neckline, because those can generally make shoulders look wider.
If you would be willing, do you think you could give me an estimate about how much you might be willing to spend on this--I was looking for as affordable as possible, because all-white can be hard to put into an everyday wardrobe, but what is extrobantly exprensive for broke college student might not be for real adult with real job. Also in regards to shoes, if you add a little red/blue/black/whatever color you think would be nice as an accent, like in the form of a sash or a ribbon, you often can wear shoes in that color to add interest. Just sounds easier that searching for specific shades of brown or beige.

I think that looks like a great shirt, Reboot. Pants-wise, if it is important to him to follow the requested dress-code, then it sounds like he is just going to need to buy some white pants, even if he doesn't want to own them for anything else.

Re: White dress recommendations
I would prefer keeping it under $100 because I do not see myself wearing a white dress ever again. I mean if I wanted one, I would own one already, ya?

Re: White dress recommendations
Do you wear tie-dye? That could be a potential fun thing to do with the dress after attending the wedding, and as a bonus it wouldn't be white any more.

Knowing my skills with drink and food it will not be white for long
That is a good point though, a dyeable fabric would be ideal

Re: White dress recommendations
Okay! Less Nordstroms, more Macy's! Also? You said sleeveless, but do short little cap sleeves that just cover the shoulder work for you? I generally regard anything that ends just at the shoulder to highlight the delts, (and cap sleeves to sort of smooth out that bit)as they bulge right out there, but do you find that to be true on your body? I can start posting stuff that I've found that has certain aspects of what you might be looking for, like potentially flattering necklines, (even if they don't work on other aspects like price or being long enough) to get a sense of what you think
EDIT: Part of the problem around price is that the cheaper stuff is going to be polyester, and I dunno how hot it gets in Trinidad but I'm going to imagine you're really going to want something that breathes! Plus cotton can be dyed afterwards, polyester not so much.

Yep, cultural norm in places that are consistently warm year-round. Your friend is going to have to dress like a banana plantation owner. I'd start bumming around thrift stores and such; should be enough turnover from retiree wardrobes to put together a Tony Montana outfit.reboot wrote:Thing is everyone is supposed to go all white. Re: White dress recommendations
I'm seeing several white dresses on Target's website, almost all under $100. Not sure if the style or shape of any of them are good for you, but if you just search for dresses and filter for White, you'll get some hits.
Apparently, you can't filter for color for men's clothing, so no idea on inexpensive white pants there. o.O
Edit: And Walmart's got this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Women-s-Lace-Maxi-Dress/40707773 I mean, if you have no use for a white dress other than this wedding, and you can find a style you like, might as well go inexpensive, right?
