Alternative Fuels Questions Empty Alternative Fuels Questions

Anyone have experience with making/using biodiesel or pushing straight vegetable oil through a diesel (or really, miltary multi fuel) engine?

For the beast you bought? Yes, it can be done but unless someone is simply giving you an unlimited supply of fryer oil and you have the free time and space to process it for fuel use, it's less hassle to just find some place selling B20 and call it a day.

I'm assuming I can dig up a source of either vegetable oil or motor oil, gently used. Trying to find a filtering process that's not too intensive so it doesn't build up in the system, figure out how much diesel to mix to prevent it all congealing if it gets cold (40 cold, not "penguins are buying coats" cold). All the "how to make biodiesel" procedures I've found are god for a few liters a day. I've got 6 55gallon drums in the back yard to fill! I figure find a plan first, THEN track down suppliers. It does come down to finding a low commitment process, though. Anything that works a liter at a time with overnight settling or requires a centrifuge is getting up there to where I might as well just buy it.

Yep. Most WVO setups are oriented towards home hobbyists who want to drive their old VW or Mercedes and flip the bird at Big Oil.

Other thing to worry about is how much of the rubber lines and O-rings in the system might need to be replaced with new neoprene. Biodiesel will eat through some types of rubber. It will also rinse out every single bit of dirt and varnish in the fuel system, so you'll be changing fuel filters regularly for a month or three.

Important note there. It'll probably be a week or two before I really start digging into it but I know its going to need some new seals here and there, might as well get ones that I know will handle some mad science.

Little side note, I'm really enjoying having something where every single part is user serviceable. Going to top off all the fluids tomorrow. Next week I'll start on filters and gaskets. Pretty cool for someone who goes to Jiffy Lube for an oil change.
