Jedi Hugs
Hey all. Hopefully not too personal, but I could use some Jedi hugs right now. I just got back from the vet; my cat hasn't been eating a whole lot lately, and has been spending all of his time in the bathroom instead of on beds or the sun as is normal. I was expecting something like him having tooth problems or maybe caught a bad flu. Turns out he's lost 3 pounds (down from 13), and has a huge amount of fluid buildup in his lungs and abdomen. The blood works and x-rays couldn't definitely rule out cancer, but the vet thought it somewhat likely he might have contracted a mutated virus (FIP) that is essentially untreatable. I could get an ultrasound to rule out cancer, but according to the vet, she thinks it probably wouldn't be worth it, and she strongly urged considering euthanasia.
I know it's probably the right thing to do. The vet said he is very sick, and the fluid is causing all of his organs to get pushed right up against his spine. He hasn't been eating, and if it is FIP, he doesn't have a lot left. If it's cancer or a heart problem (the other 2 likely scenarios), those would be very difficult to treat as well. But... I've only had him for 4 years. He's the first pet I've owned as an adult. My head knows the right answer, but my heart just can't handle that I'd be saying goodbye so soon. I could really use a hug. Thank you.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. The vet was really nice and gave us some really good cat food. She suggested spending the weekend spoiling him and saying goodbye, which I think is what I'm going to try to do.

My own puppy got surgery a few days ago for a malignant tumor.
So you get the warmest of Jedi hugs.

Re: Jedi Hugs
Thanks for all the Jedi hugs everyone. It's been a rough weekend. We have an appointment for Wednesday, but I worry he won't make it until then. He's been eating a very little, and drinking some, and is still going in the litter box, but has really started to hide away and stop purring when we pet him. My biggest fear is that he'll pass when no one is around and with him. My one hope is that he stays somewhat okay until we can give him a peaceful sendoff.
If you feel like checking it out, I've been obnoxiously posting pictures of him all weekend: https://instagram.com/thwartedneedle
Thanks again for all the support and hugs. It is deeply appreciated. :-)

Re: Jedi Hugs
Thank you guys. It was a really, really rough day but the vet assured us we were doing the right thing, and he went very quickly and peacefully. It's just hard knowing he'll never snuggle in bed with me again or incessantly meow for food or any of the other wonderful things he used to do. The house just feels so empty without him there.

No, but these are my first pets. However, I dread the day, which is why The Oatmeal's My dog, the Paradox makes me cry

I'm late to this, but I'm very sorry for your loss. It's not easy losing a companion and it's even harder when you have to make that ultimate decision.
We had to put down our rabbit, Mixy, and have had two canaries die on us. One of the canaries was at least 13 years old, so he was a big part of the family. The house was so quiet after he died.

Re: Jedi Hugs
We had to put my cat to sleep at a ripe old age, which meant she'd been with me for almost all my life. Like yours, she went peacefully and it was clear it was the right thing to do, but that doesn't stop it from hurting to know that someone you love just isn't anywhere in the world anymore. I wish I had some comfort to offer, but I don't know that there is any comfort. at least not one that makes much difference to such a fresh pain. We love, we lose those we love.
