Mine is excitement. So much that I dug up the Force-awful Star Wars fan fiction I wrote when I was a teenager.

I think we had the same reaction. My main purpose in life is to watch that movie.

Guys, stop being so excited about it! I'm trying so hard not to get my hopes up, because I can't take another disappointment like Episode 1, and you all are not helping!

Does it help that the "Empire" has reportedly been rebranded as The First Order and the rebels are now the Resistance, which implies that the new trilogy is completely shitting on the consequences of Return of the Jedi?

Well, I will say that so far there's no sign of Gungans, so that's a step up.

Even in the original Star Wars expanded universe, the Empire didn't actually fall with the destruction of the second Death Star. Their military machine is way too big, it just didn't make sense from a logistical standpoint. Or even from a dark side of the force standpoint. If Palpatine was holding the Empire together with the Dark Side, there's still going to be evil, greedy and corrupt people whom the Empire serves more than a New Republic would.

Very true. Still, they were the Empire and the Rebel Alliance was the Rebel Alliance (and then New Republic).
The new names imply that 30 years after the Rebels strike a major blow on the Empire, the galaxy has a a separate but almost identical fight going on. Maybe the new film takes place in a specific portion of the galaxy where the Empire reorganized itself into something new and is being opposed by a more local Resistance (that's maybe being helped by whatever the Rebels have turned into?)
Otherwise it just seems like the apparent triumph of the good guys in the OT was for nothing.
Sorry to derail.

Could be that the Resistance turned into the New Empire. That happens a lot in the first 30 years after a revolution.

All I want is for the movie to live up to that trailer.

One of my one big worries back when I heard that Abrams was directing was that he'd rely too much on nostalgia and sort of remake IV-VI 30 years in the future, and that doesn't assuage those worries. On the other hand, there are many many ways that can work out just fine. I'm still excited and keeping an open mind until I actually see the movie, though.

If his Star Trek movies were any indication, and I happen to think they were because they were basically Star Wars movies themselves, his Star Wars movies are going to follow the Star Wars formula for better or for worse

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (split from Entertainment joys)
I'm not much of an Abrams fan, but I think he's definitely better suited to Star Wars than he was to Star Trek, so cautious optimism there? Realistically, I think that it could well be a solid, fun movie in the Star Wars tradition, but it's probably not going to be magic on screen like the originals were. For the most part, I think you need fresh new things for that, with a clean slate to show us something new and without too many expectations to live up to.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (split from Entertainment joys)
I have a couple of problems with his Trek movies, mostly in how true to the Trek themes they were. The only one I anticipate being an issue is overuse of the prvious trilogy's characters. They're a great side dish but don't let them get in the way of the main course like Nimoy-Spock did in Into Darkness.

Yep. If you look at the format of his Trek movies, they were basically Star Wars space operas that they were hiding with Trek characters and tropes

Yup. Summed it up pretty well. I'm not a big star wars fan by any stretch of the imagination, but it's hard not to get excited over a new movie after SOOOO long since the last one
Also, I was sold on this trailer straight from that opening shot of that "sand bike" riding across a wreckage strewn landscape. What impacted me was the sound... the little faint "boom" like sound when the image cuts to black - a well known and simple trick in films, but it's "super effective" on me :-)

Werel is getting a shout out here for introducing me to that masterpiece of a TV show. It's now my favorite TV show in the history of ever, especially the second episode of the first season, dear lord.
