Aight, before anyone says anything, yes, it's okay to like anything for any reason, and people are dumb for judging your taste as wrong or incorrect.

Now that that's out of the way, there have been times in your life or groups of people you've hung around where, if you revealed you liked a certain something or other, they would mercilessly tease you at the very least for liking it. Either liking something the cool kids liked among nerds and outcasts, or liking something nerdy and cringe-worthy among the cool kids. Twilight? My Little Pony? One Direction? 50 Shades of Grey? Justin Bieber? '80s Mullets? Moe anime? What horrifying things are you or have you been hideously embarrassed to admit liking, now or in the past, and why were or are they horrifying to like?

A word of warning: You are only allowed to mercilessly tease someone else if you reveal something they can mercilessly tease them back for.

You know, yesterday before class this girl who I hadn't even once said hi to sat down next to me at talked at me (not to me, at me, I barely said a word) about Batman for about an hour. And then I mentioned liking MLP:FiM and she made Suspect face at me.

Like I'm sorry miss, if you get off on giving completely unprompted explanations of all the generations of the Batfamily tree to total strangers, you don't get to judge others for what they like.  innocent

But yeah, My Little Pony has actually been something that I'm really getting into again, perhaps even more than back in the day when I had a whole bunch of friends who were huge fans. (I always wonder why I was deemed the Pinkie Pie of our friend group--could they not see that I was honestly barely keeping it together? Or was that why? silent ) I never thought I'd be one of "those people" who gets super obsessed with a kid's cartoon, but it's actually become something of a coping mechanism for me, to listen to the soundtrack when I'm super anxious and remind myself of how many days until the next episode when depressed. So yeah, if there are any other MLP fans, I'd love to have a discussion thread if there isn't one--it's become something I really delight in, but I don't know any other fans!

As for the motherfucking Twilight series... In my defense, I was 12 and in 7th grade. Not to sound like a total hipster here, but I was into it before it went big. (I know it seems like it just burst onto the scene and became a huge thing, but it actually was a slow build before it snowballed, starting with one awkward nerd girl at a time.) There was this girl in my middle school who was a huge YA fantasy romance fan, and knew every new book on the market, and from her I think I got it months after it first came out. And when that happens, you don't get to choose whether or not you get into it! Razz

I read Twilight and New Moon over and over again my middle school years, and really loved them, then was... Breaking Dawn? (I think? I'm almost proud of myself that I've finally managed to forget this, honestly), and didn't enjoy it anymore. I only made a pathetic attempt at the last book--awkwardest non-sex scenes you will ever read. Anyway, I credit being raised in a family that encouraged critical consumption of media and a proudly feminist mother to not having my first explanation of Twu Wuv not fuck me up so much! Laughing

The only remaining hang-up it left was perhaps having a little too much of an enjoyment of agsty boys! There've been a couple of times when I've found myself thinking "Wow... That was a very emotionally intelligent, mature and self-aware way to deal with that issue, I'm impressed. But... You don't possibly think you might be willing to be a little more pained and tortured about it? Just for a minute or two? Pleeeeaaaassseeee?" Then again all the anime I was watching might have done it all on it's own!  Laughing

I maaayyyyyy have hate (but not really) watched a fair bit of moe anime back in the day for reasons I won't dare go into here! And... this may or may not be my current ringtone:

Let's just say that my dreams of rescuing all my fellow tsundere girls from terrible plot arcs involving wet-washcloth cardboard cutout Gary Stu love interests who's only redeeming value is the ability to survive massive amounts of internal bleeding after all those blows to form PAPO United (Pettankos Armed with Pointy Objects) and run around beating the shit out of any man who would dare call us flat-chested/short has yet to come to pass. Someday. Cool

I have terrible taste in music, which makes almost everything in my Itunes a guilty pleasure. So yes, One Direction. Plus Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Ke$ha, and Katy Perry. If it's poppy and sounds good turned up loud, I probably like it.

So my first reaction was "compared to being 14 in 9th grade now?" because I'm an old man and Twilight came out yesterday in old-man time.  Razz

I've been in places where I wouldn't admit to liking or having liked anime (I think that's called "the public", though funny story, I was in Grade 8 and talking about Dragon Ball Z with the nerds and outcasts and a bunch of the cool kids admitted they loved it too), and I'm extremely hesitant to mention that I like pro wrestling though for some reason it seems to be a cooler thing than it used to be even if it's at one of its lowest popularity points in decades.

Back when Ricky Martin first got popular, you were not allowed to like him unless you were the proud owner of a vaginal canal, or gay back when gay was the most horrifying thing to ever happen to a middle/high schooler. I liked a few songs from Ricky Martin and Enrique Igleisaisiasieiasiasi but I never did listen to them outside of when they'd come on MuchMusic or the radio. And then a few months ago someone posted a bunch of 90s flashback stuff and fuuuuuck Livin La Vida Loca and Bailamos were really good songs that set the insides on fire, and then Alberto Del Rio had mariachi entrance music when I got back into wrestling that I liked, and now I'm sitting here listening to Adios (spanish version) and Spanish Eyes (no spanish version? Sad ) and really liking this shit

OH, Star Trek in the 90s and early 2000s too.

Honestly, a fair percentage of things I've liked/like are pretty tease-worthy from one group or another, but I'm apparently scary enough about them that I rarely do get teased for them?  innocent  (ETA: aside from the general nerd banner that I was under whether or not I actually revealed any nerdy interests.) So a random collection of particularly embarrassing things I can think of offhand: I was weirdly obsessed with the Price is Right when I was around 11, I liked I think they were called Hanson? when they were popular even though I was way past their target age group, I still like Ace of Base - actually, any music that I did like at some point, I still like, which includes some early Mariah Carey and even a Boyz 2 Men song, I enjoy reading dumb Yahoo "news" articles with clickbait titles, I liked terrible soppy fantasy novels with unicorns and feisty Mary Sues....

Also, I was convinced for years that my most embarrassing music thing was that I liked Bruce Springsteen, but apparently he's cool to admit to liking now, and I still don't know if he was ever embarrassing and has just become cool again or if he was always cool and I was just so clueless about what's cool that I thought he wasn't. It still kind of unnerves me. Uh-oh

Used to consider the Pokemon games and anime a guilty pleasure when I was 12-14, slightly too old for the demographic at the time, and female to boot. I remember buying 2BA Master at a Suncoast and emphatically telling the checkout guy it was for my little brother, then furtively listening to it every night until the CD wore out. (I also remember the dude I had a crush on in 7th grade making merciless fun of me for my awesome Meowth necklace. Now, as a grown-ass adult, he has a katana collection. Who's the nerd, buddy? Razz) Then, at some point, I looked around and realized that pretty much every single nerd-leaning person (and many non-nerd-leaning people) under 35 had at least a casual affinity for Pokemon. I guess once the President is saying the word "Wooper," it's officially just a normal mainstream interest.

Admitting that Exalted is my favorite tabletop game sure feels like a guilty pleasure. It's essentially a loose approximation of classical Chinese and Mediterranean history anime-ified, with magic and spirits and martial arts and shit?  Lunars (≈ people who can turn into animals) being my favorite Exalts is a total guilty pleasure even in the nerdiest circles. The kneejerk furry stigma may be old news, and edit: may be is unfair and mean, but boy is it alive and kicking to the extent that I am always tempted to follow "Yeah I like playing Lunars" with "but I swear to God I am in no way a furry."

Reading Slate (aka "Jeff Bezos Presents the CIA's Washington Post's Slate") is a pretty guilty pleasure in my social circles. But sometimes I just want to read a bunch of lefty outrage clickbait that mostly confirms ideas I already agree with, not be challenged or think critically. Laughing

Some bands that I liked before they made it halfway big (MGMT, Miike Snow, M83, Empire of the Sun etc.) now feel like guilty pleasures to the dirtiest hipster part of my heart. I will turn the stereo down if I drive past somebody I know while listening to Oracular Spectacular. And I can't openly enjoy "Midnight City" ever since it started getting used in Monday night football ads because football is far, far outside the domain of any social circle I run in. At the same time, the words "I liked them before..." also feel like a guilty pleasure. Headsmack

I feel you on Bruce Springsteen, Enail. When I was about 14, I was informed that it was embarrassing and lame to like Journey. Then it became mandatory for everybody to like Journey for a hot minute there in the late 2000s. Now it's... passe and embarrassing again to like Journey? I don't even know anymore, man.

Final musical guilty pleasure: Eminem. Can't help it. I will listen to Recovery all day long as long as nobody's watching. I fucking love 8 Mile and will watch Southpaw the second it comes out. Cool

Yay, I'm glad I'm not the only one who's confused about what they're supposed to feel guilty about!

Oh, and I forgot the only thing that I have actually been mocked for in recent memory - folk music, by my cool music work friend. But I'm pretty sure both my Lesbian Card and my Child of Old School Lefties Card give me the right, nay, the responsibility to like folk music, so I'm pretty sure she's just trying to oppress me with her cool of the oppresser Grin

Anime and manga in general. To this day, unless someone else brings it up first, I won't even mention I watch / read it. I'm not even comfortable listing specific series here that raise the 'weeb' warning. Outside, say, Bleach. Everyone hates Bleach. I don't. But I hate One Piece. So I'm very popular amongst the weeb crowd, as you can imagine.

Limp Bizkit. Not a huge fan or anything, but bringing up Limp Bizkit versus, say, David Sylvian in a conversation about music you like, I'd be more inclined to go with Sylvian.

Soppy, Celtic folk music. That always gets the puzzled looks from the soppy, pop music crowd.

Could never decide whether to hate stuff like "Sukiyaki" (ugh, even the name...) and its various covers for being such an obvious symbol of cultural appropriation and ignorance, or to love it because it's a rare form of visibility for said culture (outside anime/manga/games)...and because it does sound kind of cool.

Then there's that Fall Out Boy song, which is less lyrically elegant but otherwise similar to the above: cool-sounding Asian-inspired riff, ...lots of white people profiting. Also, it's Fall Out Boy, which the Authorities have ruled Anti-Cool, so I'm only allowed to enjoy them if I do so ironically.

I have all sorts of evidence and drafted proofs demonstrating that Star Wars: The Old Republic is objectively not a good game, and that it is in fact fundamentally not possible for the business model driving it and games like it to allow such games to ever be good. This does not stop me from occasionally logging in for a couple hours per week to smash a few hundred droids and click on the green or blue shiny things.

@ MapWater: about David Sylvian/Japan, a few days ago I played some songs off Tin Drum to a friend of mine who has pretty sound tastes in music, and she laughed her ass off at the synth sounds, saying that it sounded like the soundtrack to an 80's action film, so nothing is safe I guess...

Anyway, as for my guilty pleasures...

Oh, and I remember being terribly embarrassed buying the Evangelion manga. I distinctly remember doing ninja moves to hide volume 10 from other customers, and after that my asshole flatmates drove home the point that it wasn't cool to be into Eva so I left the series unfinished... Damn, I've got to pick the remaining volumes one of these days.

Hey hey hey, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry are national treasures! Razz

My musical guilty pleasures, are, to be perfectly honest, all over the place. I love vintage and contemporary electro-pop (think stuff New Order and Kavinsky), ambient music like stuff by Brian Eno or Philip Glass, to old vintage country music like Johnny Cash. Yeah, all over the place.

My gaming guilty pleasures... don't hate me, but I love the Dead or Alive Xtreme Volleyball Games. Laughing They boob physics are more hilarious than they are sexy. I really love the old Enter the Matrix game from years ago which was super dope back then, yet hasn't aged well either. You know, stuff like that is pretty cool.

Movie guilty pleasures, Michael Bay films. Dude, I'm a sucker for Bad Boys 1 & 2 and explosions. Although Bayformers 2 can kiss my sharries, aside from that, he makes some entertaining movies. Razz

I'm sure there's more I'm missing, but that's all I can think of currently.

Bleach is actually quite loved among many people, its just that right now Kubo's story writing is not as interesting as it was back when Aizen was the villain, so now I don't think its as good anymore, especially since the anime got cancelled. However it does have its shining moments. I don't know if you keep up to date with the latest chapters. But if you do, Grimmjow!!! Finally!

As for what I like that I know is kind of lame, hmm well I really like Yugioh, the anime series. The trading card game used to be good too but now its too unbalanced and crazy. Yugioh is not very well made, it uses obvious deus ex machinas whenever the hero is in trouble , and the story basically revolves around an ancient egyptian pharaoh who lost his memories, who is now stuck as the alter ego of a shy, nerdy teenage boy, and they play card games against villains. I like it since I used to watch it all the time in the mornings before school when I was a kid, I was also mystified by the ancient egyptian historical stuff they threw in there. It also helped me with doing addition and subtraction problems since you had to do it to play the card game.

I'm pretty open with my like for pop music, especially Taylor Swift, I even go to her concerts. And also I'm pretty open with others about absolutely loving One Piece, Dragonball Z and Naruto(favourite series of all time), so I wouldn't consider them guilty pleasures.

Hmm I guess cheesy songs. Yeah that's definitely cringe worthy by many people. I just find the music super catchy, and fun to listen to.

Oh yes! The Merovingian's level. That was a weird level because apparently wolves and vampires live in the Matrix? It's implied in the second movie when Persephone asks why should one keep silver bullets in their gun. But that implication had the subtlety of air moving, as in I barely noticed.

So yes, good time. Path of Neo was a MUCH better game though, also weird, but better. Razz

Yeah, you really can't be safe. I know a lot of people that would just give me a blank stare if I let them here Sylvian's Blemish album, or better yet, his newest album There's a Light That Enters Houses With No Other House in Sight. That said, at least I'm more confident in my love for Sylvian than I am for Limp Bizkit.  Laughing

Eh, I see more hate than love, but I know it does have it's fanbase. It's still one of the Big Three (Two now that Naruto is done?). Honestly, I mostly like Kubo's art and character design. There's a great starkness to it and he clearly cares about how his characters are created from a visual perspective. Oh how I wish he would have continued Zombie Powder...

I haven't read the last 20 or so chapters but I did get Grimmjow's return spoiled. Like you said, finally. Honestly, I more frustrated that Halibel has been shafted. I always liked her shark aesthetic more than Grimmjow's 'great cat' aesthetic.

Funnily enough, I'm open to saying I dig YuGiOh. Mostly because my friends and I, as much as we loved the show, knew it was absolutely deranged. Maximillian Pegasus will always be one of my favourite villains simply because of fab-factor. But it's certainly a sstrange show. The manga even stranger. For one, Yami kills a lot of people. All for a CHILDREN'S CARD GAME.

Equally embarrassing these days, for different reasons:
