I'm currently reading One Piece, Bleach (not a great manga, but I'd like to see where it ends), Vagabond and Berserk (On the odd chances that they actually release), Hajime No Ippo and Attack on Titan.

Been reading one piece and bleach every week since 6 years ago. It is basically a weekly tradition now. I've also have always read Naruto every week as well, but that ended, so now I'm reading the recently new mini sequel of it. I also have been reading The Seven Deadly Sins. I have read a bit of Claymore, though I do need to continue and haven't had the free time to do so. I have never read the fate/stay night manga so I might give that a shot soon.

Claymore and Monster as they are released in English tankobon (the latter in the collected editions - normal ones have been done for ages).

I'd taken a hiatus from Bleach for about three months but I'll probably jump back into that soonish. I want to start collecting the Japanese tankobon for language practice in any case.

I'd be reading HOTD if it wasn't on hiatus. But, I did get into Triage X in the mean time.

Tempted to start up Nisekoi because I watched the first few anime episodes and it's actually pretty fun. Clichéd but fun.

Genshiken (does it count if we've got a whole thread for it?) and Yotsuba are the only things I'm following actively, and Yotsuba I wait on when my local comic store gets it in English (and I get around to going there), so I'm not always very up-to-date.

I was also following 20th Century Boys but have fallen far behind due to being pretty broke and not wanting to spend the money on it + not getting around to the library very often, but I'd like to pick it up again, it was good! And there are a couple of manga I picked up first volumes of a while back that I enjoyed and would want to read more of, but similar obstacles apply - Wandering Son, Ooku and at least one other I've forgotten.

I'm kind of in the mood to take up a new manga, ideally something in a more fantastical vein, but I've been finding myself really aggressively sick of manga cliches and tropes lately, which makes it hard to even want to give anything a try.

Mmm, I really liked Ooku when I picked up the first volume--the idea behind it really intrigued me, and it presented a parallel universe with men deemed the fairer/weaker sex in a matriarchy as an actual  believable place, and certainly not a femdom fetish fantasy. I was really interested to see what happened when they met with the Westerners who came to court, as that's where the volume ended, it seemed both a really good exposition technique to tell the story of how men got wiped out and add tension to the plot (I assume they're wanting to open up Japan?)

Howeveeeerrrr.... and this is a big one, but I just couldn't get over the YE OLDE ENGLISH that was used in the translation. I get it, we're supposed to be aware that the characters are speaking in a very archaic Japanese that readers would be expected to struggle with, but it so broke the immersion for me. When I read their words and can only think ren faire and Shakespeare, it's hard to feel like I'm still in parallel universe Tokugawa Japan. Yes, I'll be losing something by not having the reminder in the language that this is set a very long time ago, but I think you always lose something in translation, no matter what. It's just that the gimmick for me felt like it was taking away more than it was giving. I'll use my imagination, thanks.

I wonder if there's any fan scans online that are translated without the Shakespearian shenanigans? I'd totally read it if I had that.

Unless you are feeling masochistic, I would actually advice you to just read it online.

Yes, the translation was bad, and I had a few issues with the history - they were in a time and place where there was a class of highly literate women who were often employed as professional record-keepers and kept personal diaries in which they would write about stuff that affected them emotionally, there was no reason they would be so clueless about events of 80 years ago just because the men died.

@Suika, 20th Century Boys in particular, or just generally?

I have a tendency towards reading online in general, as there are many series who either haven't been licensed in english, or just are too large to buy normally. Most often, I tend to buy some of the shorter ones afterwards if I find that they are something that I'd like to have home. 20th Century Boys is 22 volumes, so it might be prudent to read that one online, depending on your budget and access to a library.

Then again, you can see here what titles I'm reading at the moment and which I have finished.

I generally prefer to buy if I like a series, and my library's got a surprisingly good selection, but that's not a great option for me atm.

Oh wow I didn't even realize that, that actually makes it much worse... Disapproving

Well now I don't have to wonder about tracking that series down!

Don't be too put off by me, I thought the history was otherwise quite good, and it just happened to be closely related to my field of study so I was on the high end of nitpickiness for it (and I only read the first volume, or maybe two, I can't remember, so it's possible they gave a reason for it later on).

Naw, this is actually tapping into a new pet peeve I have in regards to historical fiction/alternative fiction--the dichotomy that either women/LGBT people/minorities/ect at the time were either all horrible oppressed and everything in their lives absolutely sucked and they never did anything or they were totally liberated and ceaselessly fought for their rights/did all sorts of interesting things, and there's never anything in between. Yay, it's great the story had it so society didn't crumble to dust when men were mostly wiped out, but in order to do that you don't need to throw all women who ever did anything prior to that event under the bus.

For some reason the dark recesses of my memory, when recalling the plot, seemed to think it happened centuries, not decades, ago.

It's been a while since I read it, so I could be wrong/mentally exaggerating the problem, but 80 years is the number that stuck in my head. (Even if it was centuries ago, I'd still object, though, b/c we have tons of records of that time period, written by women, still surviving today)

Personally, I recommend Food Wars (also known as Shokugeki no Soma). It's a cooking manga set in a prestigious private cooking high school. It manages to combine the shonen action formula with cooking really well, creating tense, interesting scenes. Beware of reading while hungry, as the tasting scenes are NSFS (Not safe for stomach). Also, there is a rather large amount of fanservice, applied to both men and women, so if that bothers you a lot you may want to skip it.

Berserk's pretty much the only thing I keep up with as it's published. Dying to see how (and if Miura will finish the dang series before he's 90) the major narratives will be resolved, and keep praying that it'll get back to Surprised OH MY GOD Surprised-level epic heartbreaking tragedy and not more pirate-and-fairy filler plots. I don't hold out hope that it'll ever reach Golden Age Arc heights again, but even at its worst, it's still my favorite manga ever. Heart

I don't read hunter x hunter but does Togashi gives a reason for his long breaks? I know Oda (author of one piece) now takes one week of break on average of every 4 chapters( 4 weeks) cause he needs more rest and his looking out for his health. And he's probably planning the plot in the future during that week as well.

Togashi generally puts it on hiatus due to recurring chronic health issues. As far as my (very brief) Google search turned up, there aren't any specifics as to what that health issue is. It seems like it's hard to predict, since HunterXHunter returned for only a few weeks before the chapters started appearing in more rough states. The one before the most recent hiatus had fairly minimal work done on it.
