Supergirl! [DISC] Empty Supergirl! [DISC]

Thoughts?

I've heard a lot of people who are SUPER excited, and a lot of people who are really upset.

I think it looks fantastic, and I love how many of the characters are female.  I love that the first look not only passed the Bechdel test (with 3 different pairs of female characters!) but failed the reverse -- we never see two men talking with each other.

It reminds me a little of Buffy, before Buffy got all dark and tragic -- letting the heroine fall on the girly side of things instead of being aggressively "tough" the way, say, Marvel always seems to do it.

I was gonna say "I'm hesitant about this" but then I saw that the people behind Arrow and Flash are working on this too. Shiny/thrilled

I was hesitant beforehand because that trailer is heavy on the awkward girly and light on the superhero(ine). Kara's one of my favourite Superman-based characters but none of the versions I'm familiar with are this dorky (I mean, even Suddenly Manly Race-Changed Jimmy Olsen is still Jimmy Olsen at the end of the day, there's no way Kara drops her spaghetti around him in any universe, under any circumstances :p). Though if all of the scenes between Kara and Cat Grant are that good, it won't matter. And I appreciate her saving the plane, that's a nice nod.

Also, I figure I'll very quickly be turned around once villains with names start popping up, like when I saw the name "Hank Henshaw" on the casting list and went "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH."

On the good side, it looks fun, Devil Wears Prada Super Edition seems entertaining, I like the cheerfully reckless vibe of "let's hope I'm bulletproof" (which could lead to darker places without losing the sense of fun) and that there's lots of female characters, and I'm almost always on board with dorky awkward superheroes. On the downside, if the acting's as bad as what I've caught of Flash and Arrow, I probably won't be able to stand it, and there were a few bits that made me think they might go way too heavy on the "girl power, that's never been done before!" aspect.

It definitely gets points for all the female characters. I'm not a big fan of Adorkable Heroines, a type that I think is overrepresented in media for both women and men, and being tied to Arrow and The Flash isn't a huge bonus for me. I stopped watching the former last season and the latter after a couple episodes. So, I'll sample it, but I suspect that I might not be this show's intended audience (which is fine).

Looks potentially interesting.

One thing that kind of irritated me though, that whole "what's wrong with being a girl?" monologue from the boss lady. Supergirl wasn't implying there was anything wrong with being a girl, she was simply pointing out that she's an adult (woman) and not a child (girl).
