I was mentioned on my favorite ongoing podcast! It's so small, but it's so great.

I know it's not really a big deal, but I just completed my coursework for my associate's degree; officially I graduate in May but I refuse to walk because it wouldn't be fair to my sister (who walked three years ago when she got her associate's.)

I've finished placing all the books I want in my bookshelf in my bookshelf, and there was room. Room for all the books is something I've worried about since I started thinking about getting my own place.

You can make tea into syrups, and they are delicious and very fancy-seeming on shaved ice!

I haven't gotten it down just right yet, still experimenting, but the general idea is to make tea as strong as possible without it getting too bitter, add sugar (water to sugar 2:1 was what I did for a pretty thin syrup) and then just cook till it dissolves and thickens a teeny bit. I did a puerh for my first attempt, which can take a higher heat but if you're doing with more delicate teas like green, I'd be careful to heat it at low heat and only for a very short time.

My Barnes and Noble settlement is $221 in store credit. Granted, this is money that should have been mine all along, but still...I think of all the lovely books I can buy with that and smile.

Yay for being home for the past couple of weeks. Boo on the workload. Yay for our refugees who are required to be self-supporting within 90 days of arriving and manage to do it despite not knowing English, having no family support network, and not knowing even the basics of US culture and system.

Team Valor was all over the park I usually play Pokemon Go at today, so instead I swung by the park next to the library, only to find the gym there an agreeable shade of blue and occupied by a pair of Pokemon in the 200cp range. I was a little confused by the lowbie occupation and looked around to see who the players might be - and saw that they were the pair of first graders at the next picnic table.

I waved at the woman with them, said hi to the kids, leveled the gym up, put my moderately badass Vaporeon in there, and texted a friend to suggest she drop by with her Snorlax. Looks like the gym is still up and running, so I hope the kids got their training time in.

People are still playing that? Seemed like that fad came and went in two weeks.

My husband plays it daily. He'd play it more if they got the footsteps feature fixed.

75% of my coworkers play it. Pokemon Go, our pets, and how much we hate the boss out the go to conversation topics among a bunch of women who otherwise have nothing in common.

I think every new activity is going to have lots of people who try it and then get bored after a bit. Doesn't mean there's not an audience that it stuck with.

Host: "Congrats, you won free tickets! Why do you want to go to the festival?"
Me: (pure FOMO, man)"It's the tail end of summer and the festival season, so this is a nice closer!"
Host: "What act are you most looking forward to?"
Me: (what even is the line-up?)"Afternoon Delight'!" (checked it, turns out they are playing at every other festival but, not at this one. Luckily, the radio host waltzes right through the silence after a brief pause)
Host: "Who are you going to bring?"
Me: (whoever is available, most of my friends don't even listen to the genre) "X and Y!"
Host: "Oh, but you only have two tickets!"
Me: (oh fuck, I just blurted out two random names) "I'll make them compete, because I'm a dick like that. Haha, not just kidding, we'll figure it out."
Host: "Excellent, and can you tell me the number of acts one more time?"
Me: (fuckfuckfuck)"10?"
Host: "Congratulations! You can go!" *off-record* "Congrats again, we were also recording this segment for use in radio later, but you already figured that out, didn't you?"
Me: (screaming on the inside) "Yep, I thought so!"

Thing is, I could already go to that festival for free anyway due to previous volunteering at other events which it has sponsorship deals with, but I've gained a plus one, which is sweet.

Ran into a former mentor-type person who I'd lost touch with the other day, we both said "let's be in touch," which you never know if it's sincere. I meant it but was sort of stalling because I'd need to say some awkward stuff that I hate trying to tell people, and it had been long enough that I thought he probably hadn't meant it, but he emailed today. Possibly our relationship's a bit too mentory and formal to convert to a regular friendship, but I think I might try.

You have a yard with mangoes in it! (Benevolently envious of both mangoes and climate.)

In a week or so, as part of my work training program, I'll be starting a three month unpaid internship as a project developer in a mental health organization (by the informative name of Mental Health). If things go well, there's a chance it'll turn into something more.

That's awesome, Hirundo!

(And I too am benevolently envious, Werel, though just of the mangos, I couldn't take the climate)
