Re: Joys and Good News
One of my articles was apparently part of a grad seminar curriculum this semester (a first ), and the prof emailed me to say that my paper was "the most humanizing" he's read on the topic. That is literally the one word I'd most want to describe my work, and pretty much the whole point of everything I do. Augh.

Re: Joys and Good News
I presented a research poster for a small, regional graduate student conference at my university this past weekend. I'd never done a poster presentation before, so I basically had to teach myself how to put one together, and I was really proud with how it turned out, even if I didn't really think it was anything special compared to others. During the conference itself, several judges walked by each of the posters asking the presenters to talk them through their study, so it was a great learning experience that forced me to really engage with people about my research, and I wasn't as nervous as I expected to be given how socially anxious and awkward I am, which was also a plus.
And it also turns out that I won an award for the best poster in my research category! There wasn't a lot of competition, since it was a fairly small conference with all disciplines represented, so there weren't many people in my particular category. But it's still a great feeling.

Re: Joys and Good News
I finally managed to learn how to start a car after half a week of fruitless lessons and attempts! Even got to drive a little in the parking lot! Eeeeeee!

Alana published my guest post today. (Alana picked the title.) I didn’t include a link back here in the post ‘cause I’m pretty out of touch these days and I’m not sure if the moderation team would be especially excited about a big flood of new “incels” — even if they’ve gone beyond, plus ultra. If you did want to advertise, though, seems like a good network for a good cause.
That’s the good news part. Joy comes from my 11-week-old daughter. She’s the best.

Re: Joys and Good News
I’m having a whole spate of professional joys in the last couple days which make me feel like maybe I’m actually not bad at my job. One of said joys is that today, I found out my org is sending me to two continents in the next two months, one of which I’ve never been to, and I’m terribly excited (no shhh I’m not letting the carbon guilt sink in till tomorrow).

There's something so atmospheric about black-speck flocks of birds wheeling in a bleak, wintery sky.

I’m thankful for a whole big long list of things today, including these dead ol’ forums and the people who’ve populated them. Some of y’all became significant presences in my internet life, and sometimes even my IRL one, and interacting with all of you has helped me grow for the better. Happy the-Wampanoag-were-way-too-nice-to-those-weird-visitors day.

Re: Joys and Good News
I recently overcame my reservations about paying for it and took advantage of a trip to a bigger city to do so.
I take pleasure (heh heh) in announcing that it was pretty good!
Now I'm not a virgin in neither sense!

Re: Joys and Good News
also i've known you fuckers for longer than many of my IRL friends, back when I only had a tiny burgeoning social life, which is weird to think about, but y'all have been really patient with me especially when i didn't deserve it.
this forum probably saved my life.
