The Young Pope
Slow-mode simultaneous watching with someone. Yes, I'm watching too many things at once even for me, at some point I'm gonna crack
Episode 1 didn't do a lot for me. It was kind of just a proof-of-concept commercial extended to an hour and maybe a few things that will play into the show later. I was kind of just waiting for something to happen.

- Spoiler:
- I find it interesting that Sister Mary refused to let Lenny call her Ma but the other guy gets to.
- Merchandise! That lady is totally getting the Pope's Piusness later
- Also he's unlucky #13
- The entire scene with the Gay Priest, the comedic timing, the fucking "Time for your snack"
- Parental issues on this guy. He gets testy because people think Sister Mary is ruling through him, he thinks Sister Mary is having sex with someone and she slaps him. She almost thinks he's almost an otherworldly being instead of a person. Him shrinking into a little kid when Spencer started abusively yelling at him. And still wanting to find his real parents. The bus-ride flashback (with all the people hellishly singing happy songs) almost made me wonder if he thought of being Pope as the-thing-that-will-fix-everything and then he got there but his parents still are missing etc
- He came off like a supervillain at his address, and it was all opposite of his dream from the first episode. And the nicely timed rainfall.

Yessssss I really liked this show a lot, never dreamed a pile of babies that it'd get a thread here.
- Spoiler:
You don't get to be Sister Mary without being able to smell parental issues.bomaye wrote:

The tension between little-kid Lenny and supervillain Lenny just gets better.
His bitchy interactions with all of Vatican City just get better and bitchier.
Him smoking cigarettes in the papal silks and gold and all never gets old either

His parents left him because "they had to go to Venice!" The lighter he picked from the pile of gifts is from Venice.

S1 E3
- Spoiler:
- He uses the guy to confess to because he doesn't know if God can hear him
- Thoooose opening credits
- I liked the Hand of God/Maradona reference
- The Harvard lady who does the finances, I think her accent is French and it's delicious
- Lenny's like a kid who doesn't get disciplined, he keeps pushing boundaries and everyone keeps letting him, so he just keeps going
- Sister Mary is pretty manipulative too
- His face when Spencer is berating him, he kept switching between a little kid and being like "no, I'm a man now, I have my big boy pants on"
- He has a fangirl
- And hippie parents who he can never catch up to
- Vioello with an f-bomb
- So I guess no one really knows what happened in the election
- Juggling? Fuck this guy and his sick PUA skills
- I liked the look on Bernardo's face when Lenny admitted he doesn't always believe, Bernardo kind of got it too
- Might have that Griffith knack of saying what people need to hear to get what he wants

Re: The Young Pope
- Spoiler:
Okok, so Lenny said that he's not just gonna serve up God to people the easy way; he wants them to suffer and find him the hard way. And that lady that's his fangirl, like, seems to be saying that she liked his address? So she also wants herself/people to do things the hard way? What are her issues.
Also, the trust fall thing. In the last episode, Gutierrez and Lenny looked at a statue of a lady holding a dude kinda in that position and they said "it all comes back to the mother, doesn't it?" or something like that. And we know that Voiello is trying to catch Lenny with a romantic entanglement girl type person. But this seems to suggest that Lenny's actually connecting fangirl lady (Esther) with mom type people. Because also his hippy mom was blonde.

I also just realized he could've been playing Bernardo because he ordered the oranges before Bernardo even asked about the girl

Yep. One of my favorite things about this show is how it never attempts to mask how thick and straightforward its plot/symbolism threads are. It's like yes, Lenny is a petulant little boy in a pope robe, period, you don't need to wonder about it, just kick back and enjoy all this sensual imagery about itbomaye wrote:- His face when Spencer is berating him, he kept switching between a little kid and being like "no, I'm a man now, I have my big boy pants on"
Or what people need to hear to get COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY FACED SO HARDbomaye wrote:- Might have that Griffith knack of saying what people need to hear to get what he wants
(I really enjoy how much ambiguity they leave for the viewer in the first few eps re: what Lenny does or doesn't believe as compared to what he professes, even "privately," to believe.)jooyous wrote:What are her issues.
Really liked the development Voiello got in this episode, too, with yelling at that random kid who was living(?) in his apartment as some sort of charitable gesture(?), and just wandering around the house all decked out in soccer fan gear.

S1E4
- Spoiler:
- Man, fuck Jude Law so much. That guy is classically handsome. He's handsome in 2017, he was handsome in 1997, he would be handsome in 1977, 1957, 1857, 1657 etc.
- Haaaa I thought that was a cool effect, Suree has a radio in her ear
- Young people go crazy over cane sugar. Especially when you ask them to sin.
- Baptism dutiessss
- Look at this guy, working his charms with Greenland Waifu. They were there first, maybe God is under there.
- The Papal Record Player. Vintage.
- Stalking Estherrrrr why not just spread rumours that the Pope is creepy
- Seduce harder, Esther
- His childlike expressions. The Finance Woman in the Papal Bathroom doing her makeup and he's like "dohohooo, let's go look at the gays"
- He sure seems to focus hard on gays.
- He's a loose man, seduce harder
- "Nothing illegal going on here." Suuure, stigmata guy
- His face when he sees Esther getting nailed. Extreme disappointment because he wanted that, but then he told her to do that, and then repeating his wishes (like in the election) so that his advice ends up being right (and if she gets preggers, he can't give in to temptation, because his face every time he's with her is "GOD DAMMIT I WANT HER")
- Whoops, saw him
- Bernardo hallucinating
- Awkward Greenlandish dancing

S1E4 ARGUING EVEN
I want to be able to put my text in a certain color and have that mean: read this in Voiello's voice. His accent is fun.
- Spoiler:
When I first saw the scene in which Esther gets nailed, I thought the same thing. But then I saw the rest of the show. So now my current hypothesis is that his sexuality is all weird and he doesn't actually wants to nail anyone in the traditional sense. Like, in that scene, he pictures a bunch of weird religious stuff. That's not the normal sort of thing a regular peeping hetero would think about, right? Which makes me think that his sexuality is kinda tied up with Esther, but it's in a weird Godlike dominance way. Like, when he said that he's closer to God than he is to humans? I think that's his thing.
Also, he keeps picturing his mom being topless. But! this isn't him being weird; I think his mother actually went around topless a lot.

He talks more about his inner romantic life later (TO GREAT EFFECT), but first time I saw it, I was kinda with jooyous on that scene. Read it as him being turned on by the prospect of performing a miracle more than the happenings themselves.
Also dug Suree's hearing aide scene.
God I loved that Greenlandic dancing outro. You do you, Young Pope showrunners.

Re: The Young Pope
S1E5
- Spoiler:
- I really liked how they played with Sister Mary, Lenny and the other guy with flashbacks. These nerds skipping out of the Vatican to find a cigarette, acting like fucking boys with the hooker (until she reels them in because she knows what kind of people they are), and then all of them stifling laughs as Sister Mary walks them back inside.
- Also kinda sad how Lenny just always wanted to find his parents and the other guy was like "I saw them" and how his forceful repeating of something was a thing he did as a child hoping they were still there
- I lol'ed when the fucking perverts with their giant lenses were photographing him tickling Esther's boob
- Ohoohohooo, King was waiting for his crown before he did the sermon
- Vioella running that lame-ass Lenny-game on Sister Mary
- And also giving her the ability to destroy Lenny
- Fucking Emperor Palpatine here loving to play the dramatic villain and make everyone kiss his feet because he is the king
- Are we supposed to be able to guess Bernardo's other secret? He's an alcoholic aaannnnnnd? Was one of the sex abusers. Was sex abused? Something else?
- Jump animal friend!
- And bloom flowers.
- And ambush stigmata guy by sitting his closet for hours waiting for him to come home

Yeah. I really liked their weird little family unit.bomaye wrote:I really liked how they played with Sister Mary, Lenny and the other guy with flashbacks.
(Also, his "too cowardly to love humans" bit gives some credence to reading his relationship with Esther as more God-control-father than sex/romance, yeah? Dunno how lame Sister Mary found it coming out of Voiello's mouth, which lends some creepy Oedipal Cyrano tones to those two having a little Thing)
That speeeeech god DAMN. I was really hoping Spencer was going to stand up and just resign right then and there.bomaye wrote:- Are we supposed to be able to guess Bernardo's other secret? Re: The Young Pope
- E5:
The scene with the hooker in this episode kinda gave me a unifying theory about Lenny's issues.
1. So, we know that Lenny has a bunch of doubt about God, and he's frustrated that his conscience doesn't tell him anything and that the radio signal is crap and that he never hears God tell him things and he's constantly asking people about their calling.
2. We also kinda know that Lenny has some .. kind of divine power? Like we're getting hints about the housekeeper's wife and etc. and he seems to have tried to magic Esther into pregnancy and he also seems to have magicked himself into getting elected pope; or, at least, that's what it feels like to him.
3. And we also know that he's an orphan who can't find his parents.
So the hooker takes a photo of him and tells him that it's proof of the existence of God, and Lenny freaks out and has to leave immediately. So here's my theory: I think Lenny suspects that he is God. Like, there's nothing more there. With all his human quirks and flaws and imperfections, there's nothing else out there, he's just stuck with himself. And it freaks him out. Because! There's this profound abandonment in having power but no guidance? Which parallels his orphan status too. Like, not only is he the orphan of his human parents, he's also a divine orphan. So sometimes he'll throw tantrums and strut around and throw his weight around, and other times, he'll go beg super-awkwardly at people to tell him what to do.

- re:unifying theory:
Oh yeah, also, his evil villain speech is, like, him trying to make all the church believers feel as abandoned as he does. Like, he tries to claim that it's going to make them more popular to the publicist lady, and in the speech to the cardinals, he tries to say that it's more pious and virtuous to make people look for God instead of making it easy and accessible. But really, I think he's just doing what his parents did to him, except on a mass scale. (Ha! Pun not intended.) Also, you could argue, what God did to him too. That jerk.

E6
- Spoiler:
- Bernardo and his drunken agoraphobia is out, Andrew and his bisexual misadventures is in
- HOW IS THAT BABY HE TOSSED NOT DEAD WTF
- And how he was super narcissistic about relating the baby to remembering his parents
- That whole scene with the Italian Prime Minister was awesome. Especially that part about "God exists" because God can make people do things they otherwise wouldn't
- Sister Mary with her hair flip and ankles and staring at the boys, and then later sharing a cigarette with Andrew... probs a pedo
- Did they throw the stigma hands guy in quicksand?
- Trashing Maradona to Vioello because he's an Inter fan
- Annnnnd a gay suicide, welp
