I don't even know which topic this goes in...
Hi everybody! I am just having a crap time of it at the moment and could use some commiseration/gentle head scritches:
1. My boyfriend and I broke up, which was amicable and for good "how do you imagine the future" related reasons, but it still sucks. I guess all I want is a single, eclectic-minded atheist who isn't an ATHEIST, because I keep dating these religious guys who ultimately find my lack of religion a dealbreaker. Like, the last guy before this one was Buddhist and dumped me saying that he had to date someone who was "already on the path."
2. AND YET we are still going to my friend's wedding in Chicago this Friday. On the train. From DC. I am predicting that the wedding will be either extra awkward or sad for me. Probably both. My birthday is also the day we leave on the train.
3. Cats have been in weird, tear-ass around, break things mode for weeks send help.
4. Last week one cat jumped off my lap while I was on the computer and the seltzer I was drinking poured all over it. It's still working, thankfully, but not awesomely.
5. My mattress is from 1997 and I really need to replace it because it's giving me lower back issues but now I need to consider the computer.
6. I spilled my coffee all over my shoulder this morning. What.

Fakely, that sounds really sucky. Sorry about your breakup. And having to travel and wedding with your ex is the worst!
At least spilling coffee over your shoulder is weird enough that it tells you that all this stuff is nothing to do with you, you've just wandered into a patch of lousiness and you'll probably get out of it soon?
Many commiserations and gentle head scritches, with a small owl:

Thanks, Enail. I find that gif especially soothing. c:
Related, I saw this at the bookstore over the weekend:
I will probably not read it because I'm guessing Mumble is probably not still alive, but it sounds darling.
Related, I saw this at the bookstore over the weekend:
The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar: Living with a Tawny Owl
The story of an odd couple-a British military historian and the Tawny Owl with whom he lived for fifteen years
Martin Windrow was a war historian with little experience with pets when he adopted an owl the size of a corncob. Adorable but with knife-sharp talons, Mumble became Windrow's closest, if at times unpredictable, companion, first in a South London flat and later in the more owl-friendly Sussex countryside. In The Owl Who Liked Sitting on Caesar, Windrow recalls with wry humor their finer moments as well as the reactions of incredulous neighbors, the awkwardness of buying Mumble unskinned rabbit at Harrods Food Hall, and the grievous sense of loss when Mumble nearly escapes.
As Windrow writes: "Mumble was so much a part of my life in those days that the oddity of our relationship seldom occurred to me, and I only thought about it when faced with other people's astonishment. When new acquaintances learned that they were talking to a book editor who shared a seventh-floor flat in a South London tower block with a Tawny Owl, some tended to edge away, rather thoughtfully . . . I tried to answer patiently, but I found it hard to come up with a short reply to the direct question 'Yes, but . . . why?'; my best answer was simply 'Why not?'"
Windrow offers a poignant and unforgettable reminiscence of his charmed years with his improbable pet, as well as an unexpected education in the paleontology, zoology, and sociology of owls.
I will probably not read it because I'm guessing Mumble is probably not still alive, but it sounds darling.

Oh, no! I'm so sorry. It's so rough when you have one of those weeks when everything goes wrong, especially when you're not even looking forward to the weekend.

I would guess the bunny is hungry.
Why the heck is your ex going to your friend's wedding, unless they already knew each other?

Ugh, that sounds like the adult version of Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. But, lasting longer.

I see what you did there.
Anyway, Fakely it sounds like you're having a tough time there. I feel ya and send you e-hugs. I don't have any cute gifs of cute animals, so here, have my dopey dog with his tongue out. ;D

I have been so so short on time/motivation lately. Apologies because I thank all of you for your wonderful animal vids/pics/gifs.
My ex had met my friend and his fiancee before. He went because he'd already purchased his train ticket and I had the lodgings and things. It actually turned out to be a good thing he was there because there was a dude there who I'd had a nasty friend breakup with years before, plus one of my senior year housemates who was always just a nasty piece of work (only really toward me though; she was only really nasty to women she decided would be a threat to her desire for 100% of all male attention at all times). So it was nice to have someone to talk to. I also reconnected with an old college friend, which was good, and I hope she looks me up when she's next in DC.
Updates because I think I may have angered a particularly vengeful witch?
1. Car stereo now seems to be slowly dying. I believe it's the external USB port going bad. That is the only USB port I have left in that thing.
2. Did not get promotion at work.
3. Just fired personal trainer for ongoing issues with lack of respect for my time and failure to listen (trying to reschedule at the last minute when I have said repeatedly that I am coming from work and cannot do that), low-level sexism (had to beg him for YEARS to let me lift heavier weights, boxing training when I have experience is mild compared to ex's training with the same guy even though the ex is new at boxing), relatively constant harping on my "problem areas" even though I have always said I want to focus on strength and lifting for bone-health reasons and do not want to talk about weight/dress size/"hotness"/etc.
4. SSN and other personal info part of massive government data breach.
5. May possibly anger father and stepmother by wearing black cocktail dress to stepsister's wedding. I don't know. She was trying to get him to buy me a non-black dress and he said he'd do it and I said that I liked my dress just fine. It could also be a really unfunny joke. I never know with those two.
Right now my plan is to dig a small hole and crawl into it. Also I am going to save the money I used to spend on the trainer and purchase a mattress ASAP.
I'm trying to keep busy and I have done some really fun stuff lately too, I promise. I just feel like I am metaphorically being rained upon by all the rain in Chicago (which incidentally did happen the last day I was there).
If anyone is in DC or near DC or knows anyone in the environs, my hot tip is that there will be alpacas on the Mall this Friday and next Friday as part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

I love the folk life festival! Don't forget, you can go to the National Zoo any day and bask in the cute animals. I'm fond of the groundhog enclosure because they're cute and pop up out of the ground and the cheetah display because it has a "how far can a cheetah jump" line on one side that is clearly longer than the size of the pool between the open viewing area and the cheetahs.

Man, Fakely! I am sending many mental pleas for leniency to whatever vengeful witch is on your case! Good riddance to that trainer, though, he sounds terrible!

The Folklife Festival is really fun and I'm glad that I finally remembered to sign up to volunteer early enough to actually get a spot. I will be in the family arts and crafts area. Arts and crafts are right up my alley. Sadly, not on Fridays though: "Join weavers from the Center for Traditional Textiles of Cusco and six visiting alpacas—four adults and two babies—for a traditional fiber blessing ceremony."
I haven't been to see the new-ish otter display at the Zoo so MAYBE!

Thanks, Enail. I had the occasional blow-up at him over the years and I didn't like firing him, but I'm just tired of having the same damn conversation over and over? Ugh.

Does this new display have baby otters? If so, might need to take a few days before my new job starts to go to DC...

Hmm. The website doesn't say, but there are lots of different types of seals! Also ravens and wolves and eagles.
For your National Zoo baby needs, I can recommend SCBI's photostream. There are brand, spankin' new red panda cubs.
I'm also fond of this baby shrike:
