"Completed" of course is subjective to your own personal goals and tastes. "I'm finished playing it" is perfectly acceptable.

This is the 26th game I've beaten this year BUT the first that gets added to this list Surprised

1. Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon (DS Remake of an NES Game, played on Wii U's Virtual Console)

First Fire Emblem game I've played the full way through. I did make a few save states (there was a mission I probably spent at least an hour on and I had set it up to be beaten but I was paranoid about the power randomly going out) but the only time I ever used one was on the last level, moments before fighting the boss, just so I didn't have to waste a few extra turns positioning my army (I'd already saved just before him legit anyways).

I enjoyed how the DS version of this game kind of set it up like a puzzle, each map you have to figure out the optimum way to win . Or at least early on I did. In later levels, I'd turtle using my two promoted generals (Draug and Roger) with Lena healing, Hardin/Paladin, Jeorge/Sniper and Beck/Ballista back-up while waiting for the enemy reinforcements to peter out. Except in Chapter 24, where I took Tiki from level 1 to about level 20 something by OHKO'ing Dragonkin.

Got kind of annoyed by the last mission.

Spoiler:

I don't think I'd like playing any more of these games without the ability to train units at least. Permadeath wasn't as bad as I thought it would be (with in-chapter save points at least), but later chapters were super repetitive with endless waves of enemies and really only a few units being useful, I'm not sure if I'd play this or casual mode in future games.

2. Pokemon Sword for Nintendo Switch

32ish hours, 201 Pokemon. I did technically beat it (including the post-game final quest). I'm not finished with it yet because I do want to collect'em all and do other things in it, but it's being relegated to the game to play while listening to podcasts and not the game I'm principally focusing on.

Besides the obvious complaints that long-time fans have (THEY LEFT OUT KROOKODILE REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE), it was otherwise a solid-ass Pokemon game. Catching and collecting is always fun, I fucking loved the gyms (GYMS ARE BACK) and the focus on Pokemon Battles as a competitive spectator sport. The UK-ish backgrounds were pretty as fuck. The quality-of-life additions were welcome. I think the main villain/storyline could've been more fleshed out, but it accomplished what it meant to. Team Yell was weak as fu as far as Pokemon teams are but I guess they served their purpose. Pretty good generation as far as designs go, but super-weak when it comes to the starters.

I'm annoyed that my carefully arranged boxes with one of each Pokemon except for about 20ish event legendaries, including having every Pokemon from the first three generations, can no longer move forward (but to be fair, they started charging for it with Pokemon Bank on the 3DS, which I still don't like) and my 7 or 8 Shiny Pokemon can no longer move forward with it, and that the National Dex is no more (though to be fair, Sun/Moon got rid of the National Dex), and with that about 60% of all Pokemon are just not in play. Also after Sun/Moon had so many Ultra Beasts, new legendaries feel pretty bare.

But it's also still a Pokemon game and catching and battling is still addictive as fuck and Weezing and Farfetch'd and others have cool new looks (Meowth is nightmare fuel) and they effing brought legitimate gyms back and I actually find Raid Battles and the Wild Area kind of fun and I never played on the TV so whatever graphical problems there are I mostly didn't notice Lurking/sketchy

3. Poochy and Yoshi's Woolly World for 3DS

Was chill, I really liked some of the level gimmicks but they didn't really revisit too many of them so it also felt like each level had something interesting going for it. Liked it better than mainline Yoshi games because no Baby Mario and no percentages so I didn't have to bother with beating every level without getting hit or get got-mad because of my OCD. Except for the Boss Rush and the final secret level, which I didn't bother with, I otherwise got all the sunflowers, stamps and wool Yoshis.

4. Luigi's Mansion - Dark Moon for 3DS

Loved the small refinements, especially the addition of a mission structure. Hated that they added gyroscope controls and God of War-esque balance-beams. Sound and music is still the game's best feature. Controls on 3DS still weren't the greatest.

5. Yoshi's Crafted World for Switch

Got to the end credits, did every collectable, that part of the game was really fun, didn't have most of the aggravations that eventually get to me in other Yoshi games. Maybe the downside was that there was probably too much having to replay levels over and over again to collect everything.

After the end-credits, things unlocked and those things brought the regular Yoshi game stuff that always grinds me down or turns me off. Not gonna bother with it.

Mistover (PC)

This game initially caught my eye because it's essentially Darkest Dungeon meets Etrian Odyssey. I always liked the idea of Darkest Dungeon, but could never really get into the gameplay enough to stick with it for very long. Mistover ended up being a better fit for me because of the added JRPG-like elements, more emphasis on exploration, and more engaging combat.

The game was challenging in a way that occasionally borders on frustrating, but rewarding if you can stick with it. It was definitely tedious at times, though. Probably the biggest weakness of the game was that there are very few monster types/combinations per dungeon level, so you end up going through the same combats over and over, and since each fight takes a while, it gets really repetitive in the larger levels. I was getting tired of the game at one point and took a break for a while, but recently pushed myself to get back to it for completion's sake.

I beat the game on normal difficulty, and technically, you don't get the "true" ending unless you go through it again on the New Game+ mode, but from what I can tell there's virtually nothing in the way of added content, so I'd just be playing the same game again if I did that. If I ever decide to revisit the game (unlikely unless there's an interesting update/patch/expansion that gets released down the road), I might give it a go, but otherwise, I'm calling this one done.

Fire Emblem Three Houses - did both Black Eagle routes and Blue Lion, I might someday even go back for Golden Deer, since Blue Lion had a lot of new content and I'd like to see where it goes. But damn, that was a big game!

The combo of strategy rpg and teaching sim was really fun, combat was pretty satisfying, plus I'm a sucker for getting in-fight benefits from building relationships between character. And the breadth of character development you get from the gazillions of combinations of support conversations between unexpected characters really made you fond of the characters, even the ones you hate at first.

6. One Piece - Pirate Warriors 3 (PS3)

Platinum Trophy'd. Japanese anime games are pretty good for fans and the Dynasty Warriors system works perfectly with One Piece (as it did with Berserk). I mostly enjoyed it, grinding for the last trophy (which probably accounted for half of my total game time) to pop the Platinum got repetitive but that's what podcasts are for. Also like Berserk, I love when interests collide like this and I can show as a One Piece fan that I've platium'ed a One Piece game.

6a. Journey (PS3)

Not really a full entry, I just popped the last two trophies (encountering 10 players, which is harder than it sounds because there's not that many playing it these days) and beating the majority of the game with another player, also harder than it sounds, because players will wander off and do their own thing :nono: )

7) Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD (PS3)

Platinum'ed. Involved beating all 300ish VR Missions, beating the game three times on Very Easy, Easy and Normal while getting collectibles, then beating the second scenario on Hard and Extreme while getting those collectibles (easier than you'd think because you unlock an invisibility suit after getting everything in the other modes). Probably took me 80 hours overall.

I think I hate this game now. But it's also a Platinum Trophy I'm proud of because some of this shit felt like it was going to be too hard.

8] Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD (PS3)

That was nice and easy.

I think without the EZ Gun, I wouldn't like playing this game at all. There's so many extra steps and menus to perform the most basic things compared to the previous games, it ends up feeling like a slog.

9) Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)

Technically I beat it 8 times to get the Platinum Trophy. Even with some of the frustrations of the one playthrough that was hard, I didn't get ground down or worn down into probably hating it like I did MGS2. The one MGS4 playthrough was harder to play the regular missions, but the bosses weren't too difficult, and the rest was grinding. I think it also fixed the problems I had with MGS3 and made the gameplay fun.

10) Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD (PS3)

Still the game I find the most fun of the MGS games I've played, I fucking love base building and mini-missions. There's way too many Vehicle Combat missions, though (I think 40ish, not counting the AI Bosses and Monter Hunter battles). Also I think I had an easier time than I probably should've because I found a guy to grind out the online trophies with and he helped me S-Rank the Monster Hunter and AI Boss levels way before I should've, and he also helped me beat the level to acquire the Fulton Launcher, which is the gadget that makes S-Ranking the vehicle combat levels actually possible.

Have some weird gamer pride going having the MGS2/3/4/PW Trophies. I will play Revengeance and GZ/TPP, but those games are very different to what an MGS game is (Revengeance is a sword-swinging action game, GZ/TPP seems more like Far Cry than MGS), so I probably won't hold myself to trying to Platinum those ones.

Ni no Kuni - Finished I think everything other than 100% familiars and alchemy, b/c those were wayyyy too much of a grind.

As expected, had a lot of Ghibli charm and prettiness, and a feeling of sincerity that managed to make a lot of pretty standard story elements feel more meaningful and moving. Gameplay was fun, but the sidequests were really lazy, and a lot of elements took a ton of grind for very little reward.

11) Zone of the Enders HD for PS3 (Platinum)

This was an okay little game, but it felt like they could've done a lot more with it than they did. I like the aesthetics and how fast the gameplay is, usually mecha games a bit lumbering. The bad voice acting and character looks sorta reminded me of older 3D Sanic games.

Regular game was finicky as fuck, I liked the flow and setting of ZOE 1 more. However I did like the boss fights in ZOE 2 and New Game Plus with Version 2 Jehuty is the funnest any of these games get.

14) Mortal Kombat Arcade Collection (100%)

I was planning on beating all three games with every character just for a fun look back at games that I played a shit-ton of on SNES, but I didn't realize the console versions were toned-down difficulty from the quarter-munching arcade versions, so I just focused on beating all three games in any way possible (acks managed to Double Flawless Kintaro).

That was pretty fun once I got over all the non-MGS stuff and the "these characters weren't like this in Peace Walker" shit about it that I hated.

Was acks kind of surprised that there was even a PSNProfiles ultra rare trophy among these, it wasn't that difficult and it's only an enhanced demo

15b) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain on PS4 (Platinum)

My MGS Platinum trophy collection is somehow complete. I never thought I'd even have one of them x_x (though tbf I never read MGS3's requirements, I definitely coulda done that no matter what).

It was like a 9.5/10 video game and a 7/10 Metal Gear Solid game. The gameplay was so fun, I never got tired of it even though my game clock says 181 hours (it has some mobile game wait times on it so I did leave it on overnight a few times). Running around the sandbox maps with Side-Ops on was fun as hell. The main story missions and/or side-objectives tended to suck the fun out the gameplay and the main story itself was disappointing (part of it was that Konami and Kojima fell out and Konami rushed it out the door before the story was incomplete, part of it was that Kojima needed an editor because he wasted so much time on little meaningless things that could've been side-missions instead).

Nice quickie play. I hear people glowingly talk about how the game is about platforming and then it rewards you with speedier segments after you do them, but tbh I still find a lot of this game more frustrating than not. A lot of "GOTCHA" traps and pitfalls that you couldn't see coming, hitbox is a little too big or weirdly positioned. Green Hill Zone and Star Light Zone had it right, everything else is okay to annoying.

Cosmic Star Heroine (PC)

This was a fun, fairly short RPG in the style of old-school SNES-era JRPGs (of which I am a big fan). This game was created by a group of indie developers who also made a game called Cthulhu Saves the World, which I played and enjoyed back in the day. Cosmic Star Heroine takes a lot of inspiration from Chrono Trigger in its aesthetics and style. It doesn't reach CT's level by any means, but definitely has the feel of an homage that hits those nostalgia vibes.

The game's story is mediocre, just kind of moving you along from point A to point B, but the combat system is unique and pretty fun. The game forces you to be strategic in how you use your skills, so each battle feels meaningful, not just a grind. I played on hard mode, and it wasn't too tough for the most part, so if I ever decided to replay it, it might be fun to try the super-hard difficulty. I completed everything except this one super-tough optional dungeon where the enemies basically one-shot your characters with every hit and you have to exploit the game's ultra-cheap combos in very specific ways to make it through. I hate that kind of thing, so I didn't bother with it. Looked it up, and you don't get any cool rewards for that dungeon, just a bunch of extra cash I don't need because the game gives you way more money than you would ever really use anyway.

Is it weird to think it'd be better if games were a little more stingy with the money? I don't think I've ever played a game where I didn't have more money than I could ever use by 2/3rds of the way through the game, and it kind of takes away money as a rewarding item when you don't need it for anything anymore.
