D20 Girls Project
I found out about this "group" (not sure if there's a better term for it ATM) yesterday at an arcade/classic gaming convention:
http://wp.d20girls.org/
From their "about" page: "The D20 Girls Project is a non-profit organization that combats the negative portrayal of women in geek culture by empowering women who identify as fans of various nerd industries."
I think it's a neat thing; they've apparently been in existence for 8 years, but I had only heard of them starting yesterday. (Shows how much I go to cons, I suppose.) Seeing as I'm not a woman, I'm not sure I'm qualified to join, but I thought I'd post this for anyone who might be interested--saw no mention of it in the forum search. There's some interesting articles on their main site, and quite a few resources on cosplaying 101.
