PM box fullness Empty PM box fullness

Post by Werel Tue Mar 31, 2015 11:19 pm

Anybody have any idea what actually happens when your PM boxes are full? It's currently telling me that my sentbox and savebox are 100% full, so I'm not sure whether this means that I'll no longer be able to send PMs, or if it'll just start deleting the oldest messages in the box, or if the system is all talk and absolutely nothing will happen when your PM boxes fill up. I haven't noticed older messages being deleted, but I can't be sure.

Question in the same vein: is there a way to download and save PMs to free up space, or should I just copy-paste anything I want to keep into a text file?

I dun PM nearly enough to give you a solid answer. My suggestin prolly would be to copypasta messages to a word doc or something.

If I were to hazard a guess based on past experiences, it would mean you can't receive PMs from normal members again, but PMs from mods would still go through.

But since it's undefined behaviour, I'd agree with Mikey, it's better to just make a backup of the messages you want to keep.

If you want to keep them in context, you can save the complete webpage with the PM chain: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/save-complete-webpage-offline-reading/

Thanks, Izmuth, since there are no built-in tools for it, that'll be useful.

I was wondering when this problem would come up. We're already at the maximum allowed mailbox size, I'm afraid. I've been obsessively deleting stuff to make sure mine doesn't get too full.

Werel, I'll PM you to see what happens. ETA: No refusal on my end. Let us know what happens on yours.

No problem Enail!

I also send a test PM werel, it didn't say anything about your mailbox being full on my end, so maybe it's a soft limit?

Huh, I got them both... maybe it is a soft limit. In any case I'll clear stuff out-- thanks for that tool, Izmuth!

Hey Werel, I think your inbox finally reached its limit, because it seems I can't send you messages anymore--they just sit in my Outbox. Might want to do something about that.

Another theory: they sit in your outbox until read by someone?

I'm not sure what else would be the use of an outbox on a forum...

In any case, another test message now also sits in my outbox Werel, so if you check your PMs and you don't see Prajna and mine, your inbox is indeed full.

Sorry for the spam Razz

Regardless of how this worked out, I'm pretty sure my theory is true. (Sorry Izmuth! Razz )Because when I sent my messages to Werel, I sent two, one after another. The first one immediately went to my sent box, and the one I send second went to my outbox. (Werel wasn't online at the time, and I think if you look after you send a PM and wait a minute or so then check your sent box, it will either be there or your outbox.)

They do stay in your outbox until either the person logs in or they're read, I'm not sure which.
