Star Trek Empty Star Trek

Post by PintsizeBro Fri Aug 28, 2015 4:00 pm

Because apparently (unless the Search function is broken), we don't have one, and that's just not acceptable. This is supposed to be a nerd forum!

DS9 is my favorite Trek and when I have more time I plan to write lots about it. Valiant is one of my favorite episodes and it's very strongly polarizing. I want to tell y'all why I like it. Grin

Yay! Star Trek.

DS9 is my favorite Trek, as well, though for a long time it was TNG. I got bored with DS9 when it originally aired and then came back to it later on DVD when people whose Trek opinions I respected said I needed to give it another chance. They were right. But I will always love TNG as that was "my" Star Trek.

Voyager is my least favorite.

I am not a fan of the new movies.

Voyager is my favourite Trek. I liked that the stakes were ludicrously high Razz.

We had a thread on the old forum. But this forum deserves one too!

TNG is definitely "my" Star Trek, and is probably one of the media/story things I've invested the most in emotionally in my whole life (as well as a fair bit financially Uh-oh ). I was always a bit half-hearted on DS9, mostly due to taking random and rather petty dislikes of some of the characters (I resented Kira for not being Ro, who I loved and whose actress had turned down the role, frex) and not much liking the prophet storyline, but it had some amazing parts (GarakGarakGarak!), and I should really give it a rewatch/watch the bits I didn't some day. Liked TOS pretty well in spite of it feeling very dated and not really liking Kirk (heresy!). Voyager, I was pretty meh on even though I loved the premise, and gave up partway through. Didn't watch Enterprise. Haven't watched the new movies, and feel a bit 'damn kids need to get off my lawn' about them.

I always have a hard time coming up with favourite episode-type things, but Best of Both Worlds, The Inner Light, Remember Me (creeeeeepy!), Face of the Enemy and I, Borg are the  TNG ones that come to mind. For DS9, Duet and most of the Garak spy-y episodes stand out, but I really do need a rewatch. My memories of TOS are even hazier, but I loved Mirror, Mirror.

Favourite characters, Data and Picard for TNG, Spock for TOS. I didn't have one really strong favourite for DS9, so it's more of a tie between Odo, Bashir and Garak. I had high hopes for the Doctor and Torres in Voyager, but was often disappointed in how they were used in practice.

The original series is the only one I watched consistently. I had just turned 9 when the series started and at first I liked it because it was about cool stuff. I probably caught about 2/3 of the episodes when they ran originally, and the rest in syndication.

My favorite episodes were "City on the Edge of Forever" and "This Side of Paradise". When the series aired originally my father and I often watched it together. That's a faded but kind of bittersweet memory, given our less than stellar relationship. For that and many other reasons, I have a deep and nostalgic love for that show.

"The Inner Light" is, undoubtedly, one of the best TNG episodes. I also really like "First Contact," the episode where the crew is doing first contact procedures with an alien world about to hit warp drive. That's usually not one you hear people saying they like, but that world is supposed to be us, and I liked how and where they drew the parallels. "Darmok" may be my favorite TNG episode, though.

Bashir I can't and could never stand. Plus, he foisted Vic and all that wasted episode space on us, so I extra dislike him for that. Laughing

"City on the Edge of Forever," oh yes! And written by Harlan Ellison IIRC.

Harlan Ellison also wrote "Demon with a Glass Hand", my favorite Outer Limits episode which I watched as a re-run, home alone when I was 9 or 10. I never knew who Harlan Ellison was until much later, but he obviously spoke to me.

They recently did a comic version of City on the Edge of Forever that was based around Ellison's original story
