I've never used one myself, but legit sources seem to feel they're a good way to get work/experience (Ask A Manager talks about them frequently). Probably best to do a little research about any specific one you're signing up for, though, to be safe.

And speaking of research...
If you can, check the kind of jobs they offer before signing up with them (idk how they are in the USA, but down here they have a big display window with a lot of job offers). I considered it some years ago, but it turned out all of the available offers required skills or permits I didn't have.

They can be a good resource but only if you find a good, legitimate one. A lot of them are scams, and a lot of the others just horde information and ultimately prove to be more of a waste of time as Craigslist.

I got lucky and found a good temp agency after I graduated college and they got me my first two jobs in my field. True, none of the gigs lasted more than 6.25 months -- one of the gigs lasted 3 days -- but it was a good experience. My first rep was a great guy and during my time of unemployment during the height of the "great recession" in 2009-2011 I would check in with him at least twice a week. But then he left, or was fired, and my next rep was lousy and I drifted away. But every other agency I found since was usually either a data mine or a scam.

The best thing I can recommend is doing your homework, especially reviews. Google is good for some things.

Funny you mention that because I just got off the phone with the agency I signed up with (Robert Half), and my rep just got fired. So now I have a new one that I can't call until a few hours from now? God, this is so embarrassing.

Like anyplace else, a "company" which sees high turnover can sometimes be worth at least a wary eye. I am not an expert on temp agencies but while some are good and can land you some interviews, a lot seem to be data mines. And be wary of any that mention a fee or more info than you feel comfortable sharing. It can get embarrassing and nerve wracking.

If it is a temp agency you can visit in person (which I always prefer), give it what I call "The 10 Minute Test". This is good when you go to a job interview too, since there are a lot of scams for unemployed or underemployed people. The test is looking around and thinking, "If the people who ran this place had a 10 minute warning that a raid was coming, could they seriously grab everything and be gone by then?" Scam places usually have only functional decorations if best and the desks are bare.

In my 20's I once found myself going to a "call center" that looked like an abandoned building on the outside where the "manager," a guy who wore Hawaiian shirts, gold neck-chains and bragged about flipping houses in his heyday, literally ran it all out of a briefcase and 2nd or 3rd hand laptops. Nothing on the walls, not even a calendar. It was "pure commission" and his tax forms weren't even positioned properly on the copy machine he'd clearly used to craft them. His butt would have been out a window in 2 minutes of a raid.
