Re: Politics and Current Events
Don't forget the fact that they held a freaking party at the White House Rose Garden celebrating the fact that the bill passed the House.
- CW: DV/rape:
- Did they mention that, and I'm not making this up, that rape and domestic violence are also pre-existing conditions?

It's almost like being a woman is a preexisting condition, which should not be.

Well, one of the protections that's now out the window is that insurance companies can't charge women more than men.
So, yes? Being a woman is a pre-existing condition! Or, to extrapolate from Alabama asshole: Being a woman means you haven't lived a good life.

Wow, the BC Provincial election is ridiculously close.
44 seats to form a majority government. The BC Liberals won 43 seats. One riding went to the NDP by 9 votes. We're now in recount mode (it's automatically triggered when votes are really close) plus waiting on counting absentee ballots to see what the deal is going to be.

Is a riding like what we call a precinct in the US? Or is it more like what we call a seat (in the legislature)?

What are they things that get gerrymandered in America? Electoral districts?

Districts.
We don't usually say "districts" are reporting. We say "precincts" because each district has multiple precincts which is where you vote (or send your ballot if vote by mail).

Re: Politics and Current Events
Yeah, it's the equivalent of a state district. One party won one district by 9 votes, and how the automatic recount and the tallying of the absentee ballots (there's a military base in that area) will determine if the incumbent government retains a majority position or if we end up in a minority government.
Literally 9 votes are determining an election for us right now

Re: Politics and Current Events
I think it's interesting how political words can change their meaning completely, depending on the political context.
- I am politically red.
- I am most definitely not a liberal.
- I am a republican.
Those three statements are all true, but to an American they would give a picture of me that is completely opposite to who I really am.
- In Sweden (as well as most countries I think, other than the USA), red means left-wing and blue means right-wing.
- A "liberal" in Sweden is someone who believes in the free market. I'd say it's closer to what an American would call a "libertarian". I'm a socialist, so this obviously doesn't describe me.
- A "republican" in Sweden is someone who thinks the monarchy is outdated and Sweden should become a republic. It has got nothing to do with the American republican party.

Re: Politics and Current Events
The color thing that now exists in America is arbitrary and by chance.
It used to be that during presidential elections, the American media would switch back and forth every four years for coloring states blue or red depending on whether the Democrat or Republican candidate won a particular state on election night. In 1996, blue was a state that went for the Republican candidate Bob Dole, and red was a state that went for the Democrat Bill Clinton. Four years later in 2000, that switched: Red for Bush, blue for Gore. And that's where it stuck. Because that election was so close, states started getting called red states and blue states in discussing the results before the outcome was final, that terminology stuck, and the rest is history. Now, they don't change the colors every four years anymore.
So, if the Republicans had been blue in 2000 and the Democrats red, right now, Texas would be a blue state and California a red state.

Trigger Warning: Bill Cosby, Self-Centeredness
Bill Cosby either used, or more likely claimed to use, or possibly used the capsules of to contain another drug...well, anyway...the pill mentioned is the over the counter allergy medicine I take a couple times a week when my other one doesn't do the job. There's a debate going on elsewhere on whether it can be a drug used to cause unconsciousness. I'd say that with alcohol, it absolutely can, because I've been the girl who took it because she didn't want her stuffy nose to ruin her night out and then ended up unconscious after two watered down cosmos (I'm not going to claim I've never gotten drunk until passing out, but two drinks is not near that point).
I'm not really sure why this upsets me more than the Cosby trial otherwise has, which has been a lot. Maybe it's because I have totally taken Benadryl (and also Tylenol and Zyrtec, in an, "Ugh, I feel awful!" way) from people I haven't known very well, and haven't realized how scary that is? I'm not going to say it couldn't happen to me. It's happened to me in a different form. It's more that the world is threatening in just one more way, when it's already pretty terrifying.

Yeah, I find it somehow more unsettling too and couldn't put my finger on why, I think you've got it.

So Alamo Drafthouse is getting sued for having women-only screenings of "Wonder Woman". Ugh.

Is that illegal? I hope that they had this in mind when they set up the screenings. They had other screenings for men. And they're a private business.

Re: Politics and Current Events
There's apparently some question on how legal it is due to Civil Rights/laws designed to stop Segregation.
The precedent might be there, but in reality it's so goofy to challenge it based on something like Lady's Night that no takes that kind of precedent seriously

Ladies' Nights have been found to be illegal in some places, I think.

Re: Politics and Current Events
So, this is a "how to get away with sexual assault legally" thing? Pro tip: Move to North Carolina. I read an article this week that says consent can't be withdrawn once given in NC.
All the rage.
All the rage.
