Johnny's Fashion Experiment
I've been thinking of upgrading my closet for a while now. I've got plenty of basics - geek t-shirts, jeans, cargo pants, slacks, button down shirts, some decent vests that I don't wear much but nothing (except for some excellently stylish jackets) that really pops. Its all very solid but fairly plain in the summer when I'm working with a more limited number of layers. I don't do polos at all (long story), so that pretty much leaves full button down shirts. So here's my plan - I'm going to spend $100 (give or take) this weekend going through ebay, etsy and the like, picking out experimental shirts from the Japanese-Korean slim fit lines. I know monochromes work well for me, as do darker blues and greens, so I'll concentrate on those. As they come in, I'll post photos and figure out what works and what doesn't. Some of them will undoubtedly fail but that will let me zero in on the ones I want more of to make an anchor point in my wardrobe.
While not quite Johnny's Lifestyle Challenge, I'd like to open it up to everyone else as well. Pick up a few different things in a few different styles, post photos and zero in on the ones that are working to build off of.
Here are my current front runners:
Black and Red for my inner goth boy - S
grey - XS
These two are from the same company so one's either going to be a bit small or a bit big but this seemed like a good way to find out which.
The black because the detail will show better than the white
Just because it looks spiffy and is coming from CA instead of China
And ye basic black and white

I'm not a fan of that one. Depending on what you wear with it, you could end up looking like an Atreides retainer.

I like. Definitely the kind of shirts that make a statement beyond "I understand what No Shirt No Shoes No Service means".

I love that first shirt. If they made it cut for my shape, I would buy it. If I found myself unexpectedly single, I would consider marrying it. Oh yeah, and it seems like a good match for your style, too
After that, I like the last one, then the geometric one - that one seems a little further out from the rest of your style that I've seen, but if you want to push the edges of your range a little, it looks cool. I'm not such a fan of the second link, the double buttons look a little awkward.

Re: Johnny's Fashion Experiment
The last one is definitely "safe". Its got a little flash but not so much that it screams dudebro clubwear. The first one, the photo, definitely has that Atreides (or better yet Ordos) semi-scifi military look but that's exactly why I like it. Its definitely memorable and yes, I think its a good match for me. The geometric one. . .yeah, I'm definitely pushing a bit there but I though it was better than this.
Its a shirt! With a tribal dragon. . .thing!
Which, to me at least does scream duouchebro's in da club, yo.

Atreides? Please, the first one has that very distinct 'I took an oath to burn villages for the Führer' look.
And then compare how many people have seen 'Dune' (a fairly old and a very failed movie) to the number of people who have seen 'Something Something Nazi Something' shown all the time on all those channels.

Nah, its Navy blue. If someone wants to make an uncharitable comparison its gonna be "sailor boy" before its "brown shirt". . .and this coming from a guy who wears a brown khaki button down with a black military cap and never gets shit for it.

I like the white version of the shirt in the third link. The pictured shirt doesn't look bad, it just looks too much like a costume.

Well, if you're pulling this off, then you might just as well fully commit to the space mercenary look, with eagle-themed embroidery and jodhpurs!

Oh, did I mention the black military hat has a mockingjay pin on it?
