In a discussion about the recent crane collapse and crowd crush disasters at Mecca:

Colleague: "Good. A few less Pakis in the world."

I don't know whether it's the sheer, cruel, bloodthirsty racism of it that pisses me off most, or that he can't even be bothered to work out which race it is he's acting hateful towards. Okay, that's not quite true, the actual racism pisses me off more. But the ignorance runs a close second.

More so than usual, not for any good reason, all the little inconveniences of the day like typos, idiot drivers and brief internet cut-outs have been really aggravating. I'll just have my pizza now and go to bed. Roll on tomorrow, when hopefully all the little inconveniences won't be as aggravating.

Le sigh.

No, I don't like being attracted to anyone. I fucking hate it. Sure I could ask them out but then what's the point if in the end they'll reject me anyway? I just wasted my breath and your time, so I'm sorry.

Just say ya hate me, it's easier that way and I won't have to bother. Well, it's not like I bother anyway since let's be honest one way or another rejection is coming anyway.

I'm sure you can find meaning in this somewhere: http://youtu.be/YtaCF0A5wWw

Not a good idea to sleep with your roommates who identify as a sexuality that doesn't include your gender.

Just...not a good idea, in this scenario, and in general.

THere are exceptions to the rule as always but still; it's like sleeping with a coworker. You have a "professional" history and forced interactions ahead.

Risky biz.

Oh, kitty cat. You were actually standing right at the edge of the door, but you decided to take those few steps into the bedroom so that you could vomit on the carpet instead of on the tile. I'm going to pretend that this is yet another sign that you love me.

Re: Return of the Rants

Post by sky on Fri Oct 30, 2015 8:38 pm

Was terrified awake by my smoke alarm at 3:45 AM, when my new apartment finally got cold enough for the heater to turn on for what was apparently the first time ever. The building managers assure me that "this is normal and will probably happen the first time it runs every winter, when it burns away the dust that has accumulated over the summer" but I know what normal burning-heater-dust smells like and this was way worse. I'm betting on more of whatever manufacturing chemicals my new carpet has finally stopped reeking of.

So. Now I have to remember to schedule a "turn on the heater when my apartment is not cold but at least I'm awake to deal with the smoke alarm" day every year when the weather starts to get cold.

On the other hand, at least I know the battery works, since I don't own anything that's tall enough to stand on and reach the ceiling and I haven't been able to test it.

There are never two sides, there are a bazillion sides, and the best place to be is in the crossfire. And if you think that's easy for me to say, I guess I'll just have to paint a bigger target on myself.

This makes the first statement ring all the more true, although hilariously lacking in self-awareness. If ideas are a virus, perhaps one needs to treat them like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aI0euMFAWF8

Re: Return of the Rants

In this morning's paper (paraphrasing): Local kindergarten teacher arrested on charges of downloading and sharing child pornography. No evidence of contact with actual local kids (yet). But here's a telephone number to call if you have information that he has harmed a local kid.

I am so angry. My oldest starts kindergarten next year. I'm imagining how I'd feel if this had been my kid's teacher. How would I explain why his teacher was gone and now there's a substitute? How will I ever be able to ask my kid to trust his teachers, when I know this is a possibility? (The arrested teacher had passed a pre-employment background check.)

It's such a giant breach of public trust. I mean, I kind of understand the argument that people who have sexual feelings about children didn't ask to have those feelings, I don't like it but I kind of understand it. But most of the jobs in the world do not involve spending every day in a room with vulnerable 5-year-olds. This guy could have sought employment in one of the millions of jobs that mainly or entirely involve interacting with adults. But no, he went and became a kindergarten teacher.

Breach of public trust. The system depends on the ability to trust. And then someone comes in and subverts that trust in this horrible way. I'm so angry. So scared and angry and disgusted.

I thought "take-home midterm" usually meant, like, "this midterm may take a little longer than an in-class midterm. Perhaps up to twice as long as a class period, so maybe 3-4 hours." Not "you've spent a total of 12 hours so far on this midterm you were given 5 days to do, and you're not even halfway finished yet." This is some cruel shit, teach. I haven't cried over a test like this since I was in eighth grade.

I hate untimed tests. A friend once had a prof say the class had all the time they needed to complete a final--5 hrs later most of the class was still there and it was over 8 hrs later when the prof shut them down (probably a good thing considering they were allowed to get water and use the restroom but not able to get any food)...

Oh man, I thought the untimed final that took me four hours was bad. Both of those sound horrible!

Re: Return of the Rants

Post by Xexyz on Mon Nov 09, 2015 1:25 pm

I'm in the market for a new car and I've zeroed in on a good deal on cargurus for a car that has everything I want.  The problem is that the dealership hasn't put up any actual pictures of the car; right now they just have stock photos.  So I called the dealership last week to ask if/when pics are going to be posted, and I get a wishy-washy answer.  And then the salesman has to throw in a subtle, "we've had a lot of inquiries about that car" as if I'm going to fall for that nonsense.

It's been a week and there are still no pics of the car, and it's been listed for 23 days.  The salesman told me the reason the pics aren't up are because the car's being reconditioned but the fact that they're advertising it as a CPO makes me nervous because it makes me wonder what kind of condition it's really in.

My hope is to get a new car before the snow comes, but that's looking less and less likely. And unfortunately that deal's shaping up to be too good to be true. =(

Been committing and changing my mind for awhile now. I finally asked my sister to take pictures of me.
What did I need them for?
"I'm going to try and start a dating profile again"
She bursts into laughter.
"What's so funny?" I ask.
"You don't like people."

I can't get mad at her; she's right.

*sigh*

Yikes. Notified a few minutes ago that this professor is cancelling class this week because he's been in an accident that burned his leg so badly he can't walk or wear pants. I'm not totally sure that this freak occurrence had nothing to do with the amount of anguish and rage directed at him by his students this weekend. Like, I know voodoo is usually intentional, but... Uh-oh

See it for the shell game it is. If you agree, you must do so 100% or else it is concern trolling. If you disagree, you get bombarded with how you'll never understand it and the fact that you disagree means that it is pointless to argue with you(and it would be giving in to your entitlement). Even pointing this out gets turned into policing responses, or you yourself arguing in bad faith, as any reaction the accuser receives can be dishonestly filed into one of these categories. The effort is better spend looking for people who do argue in good faith(and rigorously check if you still do so yourself).

Carrying thrashing screaming crying 3-year-old and he gives me an inadvertent wet willy. Was it spit? Was it tears? Was it snot? Was it all of the above? Don't know, but yuck.

On This Day, many years ago, I posted something sort of obscure to indicate to my best friends that my marriage was over.

Thanks, Facebook. I don't know what I'd do without reminders like this one and that one last month celebrating my 7-year Facebook friendship with a girl I've known since kindergarten.
