I thought this might be a good place for people to share issues and concerns around social justice to raise awareness.

Worker's rights in nail salons are often grossly violated across the US. Do due diligence and ask questions if you go to salons and report violations you come across. And remember, if it is a super cheap mani-pedi that means workers are not getting paid minimum wage.

BaseBuzzed, this is not exactly in line with the spirit of my OP, which is my fault for being unclear. My intention was to raise awareness about situations like the article I linked so that people could learn more about SJ issues like worker exploitation. I was hoping for less academic topics and more, "Did you know X was happening? Do due diligence when buying product/service"

Coolcool, spin-off thread for academic topic if there isn't an appropriate thread already?

Hoping this is more in line.

Folks, watch where your bottled water comes from, hopefully not from drought-stricken California.

As someone currently living in drought-stricken California, your attention to this issue is much appreciated.

This is why when I want a bottle of water, I will reuse a bottle (be it designed for it or not) and refill from the tap. I have well water. Bottled water tastes kind of off to me.

I have been hesitating to post about this because, although I believe there needs to be more awareness, it is something that is nearly impossible to avoid, but here it goes: slavery in the food supply chain .

Here you can calculate how many slaves worked for you to create your lifestyle. It is sobering reading.

People recommend buying food grown locally to avoid exploitation, but the truth is, yes the small farmer's employees are not slaves, but almost 100% used farm labor contractors to staff their farms during planting and harvest. Small farmers do not ask too many questions and take the lowest bidder because they cannot do otherwise and stay in business.

So this is something that is almost impossible to avoid contributing to, unless you move back to the land, make your own clothes, harvest your own lumber, own no electronics, etc., but it is something that it is good to be conscious of as you shop and enjoy your fruits of slavery.

United Farm Workers has a campaign to investigate shade, water, and bathroom occupational violations. You can tweet, text, email, call, FB etc if you see something shady. Here is a link to the campaign page

"Slacktivism" can pay off big for causes and issues: Ice bucket slacktivism pays off

Which is not surprising since pre-internet, most supporters of causes just posted signs, had bumper stickers, wrote letters, etc.. It was just less visible but just as "passive" as what we see today. So take that haterz

Not looking forward to elephant extinction (t-minus about a decade if current poaching rates stay steady); consider joining your local march for better ivory trafficking regulations on Saturday (list of cities here). The organizers' materials are a little cheesy, but I'm willing to espouse cheesy if it means we don't lose one of the only other sentiences on the planet.
