Too modern for my personal tastes, but a pretty cool interpretation nonetheless. I just hope he can pull the role off well.

Nay, the tattoos make him look like a try-hard. We know the Joker's a loony, so I'd rather see it in his acting.

I actually agree with that. I imagined that if the Joker wore tatoos they'd be more artistic, more creative and more flamboyantly creepy and less about open statements of what he is.

Look at Ledger's Joker. No tats. Just a mouth that's cut up for reasons that keep shifting.
That's creepy.

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
First read says a little too over-the-top, which is Joker-appropriate but it could easily get ridiculous, and I'd worry they'll just try and use more horrific violence and edginess to try and force it to seem scary rather than silly, which I think is a pretty big risk with a Suicide Squad movie anyway.
But OTOH, I think it's a good thing to try something quite different so as not to just be repeating pale imitations of Heath Ledger's version, and there's a kind of too-close intensity to this that's very uncomfortable, which I can imagine working for a very different but very creepy Joker. So I think there's potential as well. I'm on Team Wait and See.

I'm also Team Wait and See. I'm generally pretty leery of making predictions about superhero movies based on stills or casting decisions or single point plot leaks. Often things that seem odd end up making perfect sense in the larger context of a movie, and sometimes things that sound great or obvious end up being a bore.
Leto's a talented actor, the filmmakers are wise enough to understand that this Joker will need to be a different interpretation not to disappoint, and I can imagine this working.

This Joker sucks, there I said it.
He looks like a douchebag desert rat from East County San Diego. All he's missing now is the bigass lifted truck.
Long story short, I don't like this tryhard looking Joker. I already don't like Jared Leto, but this is just blech.

To me, this Joker has to be an absolute nutcase. Ledger Joker is fine as the main villain or one of two villains, but Leto Joker is one of the protagonists in a super-team film, sharing screen time with Will Smith and whoever else is really famous out of the cast.
The cast also includes Harley, who I think Ledger Joker would kill.
I think this is a total whackjob Killing Joke Joker, meant for laughs and black comedy, instead of deep, dramatic Joker, and that's why I love it. They had to redefine him for a different role, and instead of playing safe they're just going for it

He kind of reminds me of a method addict who lives in the park near me. Joker and meth always seemed a natural

I like the makeup and the facial expression. Not a fan of the tattoos at all. I agree with those saying that it makes him look like he's trying way too hard.

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
It does seem a few years dated at this point, it's true.
I'm with Bomaye that he needs to be much more fun than Ledger's Joker for a team, and intense and erratic is a good move for that, but they do need to leave enough room for the other characters to have some spotlight. I think they might do wise to keep his role relatively small if he's going come on that strong the whole way through. I'm not too sure I like the version of Harley that I'd picture going with this Joker, though.

For those that are saying Joker's a tryhard: Yes. Joker is a tryhard. He's Batman's psychotic ex, doing anything and everything for his attention. Joker is to Batman what Harley is to Joker.

But... Killing Joke Joker was a tragic figure you legitimately felt bad for. I'm fine with him being played with dark and crazy humor, but the ink is just... no.
I also disagree that in general the Joker is a tryhard. No, I think he's the Captain Hook-ish kind of villain who doesn't give a shit and believes any and all are expendable. Except for Harley who may be the only one who actually likes him and Joker prolly digs that a tiny bit even she annoys the piss outta him. But even then, if you played the Arkham games, you'll see that even she is expendable (Joker leaves Harley tied to a pole for the Bats and Cops to find her).

What? Captain Hook's whole deal is that he's obsessed with Peter (and the crocodile) and he takes himself and things like British boarding school ideals waaaay too seriously. He cares ridiculously much! He's the tryhardest tryhard who ever tried!

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
Killing Joke Joker did use crazy circus ride stuff to try and drive Gordon crazy, if I recall.
TDKR Joker was comatose while Batman was retired, but then woke up laughing when Bruce put the cape back on. Death of the Family Joker is mentally incapable of acknowledging that Batman is Bruce Wayne, and panicked when Batman told Joker that he "figured out who he is." There's even some people who think the final panels of The Killing Joke is them kissing. I think there's a lot more room for interpretation than many think.
On the Harley thing

- Spoiler:
In the New 52, he revealed that he just keeps making New Harleys whenever he loses one.

Well, I meant more in that he doesn't care about what his subordinates think of him. If that's not a good analogy, oops, my bad.

Eh, fair enough I suppose. I just don't really like the look of this new particular Joker, get rid of the ink and he looks creepy enough. But the rings and the tattoos... eh, nah not for me.
And woah, on the Harley thing. D:

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
Tangent: Smee is a creepy child molester who derives much of his pleasure from garroting people and is one of the older examples I can think of of a character naming his weapon (in a comedic context rather than a medieval "this is Sting, the Elvencraft, Treasure of Trolls, Slayer of Orcs, Spiderbane, Convenient Glowstick" sort of thing, I mean).
Captain Hook is jealous of Smee, because Smee has such impeccable table manners and doesn't even know about it, and that ignorance makes him genuinely modest about it, and therefore he has all-around very good form and possibly the best form of all.
I'm with Enail; Captain Hook cares waaaayyyy too much.

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
I think a proper Joker is like an extremely perverse and cruel, but slightly cool in a way, man pulling deadly and convoluted pranks on everyone. Yes, he's out of control, but I think the current characterisations of him in films put waaay too much emphasis on the gritty, "broken" side of the character. Basically the Joker should be scary, creepy, impulsive and insane, but the reason why he laughs should be understandable (but disgusting) to a sane human, and he should have slight traces of some sort of strange appeal. He's supposed to be a genius of murder and even out-wit Batman. This Joker isn't like that at all. He's just creepy. And stupid.

Re: Jared Leto's Joker [Suicide Squad Film]
I like the implication that all those silver teeth are replacements for the ones Batman punched out of his skull. The single promo photo is definitely over the top but its also a promo photo. There's another once circulating, a photo of someone showing off an on-set photo of Leto as Joker (a photo of a camera showing a photo) that's less over the top. Remember that this is going to be an ensemble movie, so as much mindshare as the Joker has, he's sharing the screen with Margot Robbie (Harley, who's more Suicide Squad involved in the comics than Mr. J), Jesse Eisenberg (Luthor), Viola Davis (Amanda "The Wall" Waller), and Will !@#$ing Smith (Deadshot) among others. So he's probably going to be painted in fairly broad strokes.

Cast photo is up. I'm feeling pretty meh about it, it looks very '10 years ago trying too hard to be cool and gritty', makes me suspect it'll be heavy on shock factor and low on fun.

He's a serious contender for the title although I think that the tryhardest tryhard in fiction is still Doctor Doom who's only obsessed with his inferiority/superiority complex towards RICHARRRRDSSSS!

I'll err on the side of caution now that I've seen Deadshot in his actual costume. Also consider that relying on shock factor is more or less David Ayer's style and may actually fit what they may be going for.
I mean, have you not seen End of Watch (fucking brutal and brilliant), Sabotage (great action movie, I mean Arnie is in it!!) or Fury (also fucking awesome)? All of them are dope and "shocking".
