Berserk
So next month marks the start of the new Berserk anime. It'll be the first TV adaptation of the Berserk manga in about 20 years, and I am pretty daggone excited. If you already love Berserk, this is a thread for screaming into your computer about how stoked you are. If you have never seen/read Berserk, this is where I try to convince you to catch up to where the new series starts so we can all talk about how great the new show is (I hope).
WARNING WARNING WARNING
THIS SERIES IS SUPER GRAPHIC! If you prefer not to see/can't stomach explicit depictions of very terrible things, TURN BACK! There is sexual violence and murders of children and demons eating people and things like that, plus it's about medieval warfare! THERE WILL BE BLOOD!
BUT: none of the graphic stuff is the point of the series, and it is not shock-genre schlock that's just about making the reader go "ewww." If you can handle gore for the sake of a good story, COME WITH ME ON A JOURNEY TO THE KINGDOM OF MIDLAND
The gist: a lone swordsman in a pseudo-medieval-Europe setting joins up with the charismatic, ambitious young leader of a mercenary band and his right-hand woman. (Obviously all three of these people are super good at swords, and you're going to see them use those swords a lot.) The initial plot arc follows the mercenary band's ascendance to greater and greater power, the costs and consequences of that power, and the grim truth that no matter how big your sword or army, humans are totally weak and useless in the face of malevolent supernatural forces unless you make some kind of Faustian deal. This series offers some gutwrenching explorations of friendship, hubris, loyalty, demons, violence, choices, death, and the way Japanese people see Europeans, and it is one of my favorite TV shows ever.
Also, there are scary monsters, if you're into looking at intricate drawings of scary monsters.
There are currently three main ways to consume Berserk. It's a big franchise (the manga has been running since 1988, we're on volume 37), so you might not be sure where to start. Here are the options:
The new show will cover the events immediately after the Golden Age arc ends, so if you want to join in watching that, get caught up to volume 14/the end of the old anime/all three of the movies.
"AAAHH WHAT IF THE NEW SHOW IS BAD"
There's also a new video game in the works; there have been a few lukewarm Berserk games in the past, and the Demons/Dark Souls series is essentially Berserk: the Game, but maybe this one will be the legit Berserk game we've been waiting for. Here's the trailer, with SUPER SPOILERS (end of Golden Age arc), and SUPER NSFW CONTENT:
ROLL CALL! You gonna watch the new show? Favorite characters/moments/themes? Think the new game will be good? Think the manga is ever, ever going to resolve this plot arc it's been stuck in since like 2010? Think the new show will include your particular favorite people/events? Curious about this franchise but have questions? BERSERK CHAT TIME.

- The 1997 anime: Kenpū Denki Beruseruku is a real fun phrase to say, and also my most recommended introduction to the series. It's a 25-episode run that covers the first major plot arc in the series (the "Golden Age" arc, roughly volumes 1-14 of the manga); this is also IMHO the best and most important part of the story. The animation is late-90s-looking but generally pretty good, the soundtrack is amazing, and the pacing is tight. I am very very fond of this anime. There are some episodes on YouTube, but I dunno if the full run is there.
- The manga: If you prefer reading to watching, or you want the complete Berserk experience, including all the little details that got cut from the anime, this is the way to go. The art is not bad from the beginning, but it gets really really really good by about volume 10. The soundtrack to the '97 show is a good thing to listen to if you like a little ambiance while you read.
- The 2012-2013 movie trilogy: I can't really say much about these because I didn't finish watching them. They cover the exact same plot arc as the 1997 anime, so I'm not sure what the point of the movies is. Friends who watched 'em said they were bad and not worth the time, but I am open to having my mind changed; did anybody see them and like them?
The new show will cover the events immediately after the Golden Age arc ends, so if you want to join in watching that, get caught up to volume 14/the end of the old anime/all three of the movies.

- Spoiler:
Don't know how I feel about making this particular part of the Eclipse the focal point of the trailer, but I guess it's the most recognizable moment in the series...

Re: Berserk
Bandwagon, here I come!
- Manga Ch. 1-2:
-Well, that was a freaky sex scene to start with
-That cobra helmet is badass
-Nice attention to detail, the guy who got an arrow through the nose has a fake nose on now
-Okay, that certainly got me interested in what that brand is all about, that's fucked up, man!
-He cut the horse in half, 6-year-old me just ran off sobbing somewhere
-I LOL'd at Puck's expression here
-CANNON ARM
-That first panel is beautiful
-Probably my first thought on seeing a murdered young woman possessed by demons, carrying her father's head in one hand and the sword that killed her in the other, shouldn't be that she looks kind of badass. I think the grim & gruesome of this series is getting to me already
-It's okay, a few pages later and a flashback to her living self has me feeling guilty for being so callous. I've still got feelings, y'all
-... and then he cuts her in half. Puck curled up sobbing might have the right idea with this series, maybe I should go back to no feelings
You weren't joking about graphic and depressing! But it manages to throw you straight into what could be very meaningless grimdark and a generic stoic atoner anti-hero, and have it not be those things, and be actually compelling.

YAAAAAAAAAYYY
- Manga chapters 1-2:
The site you're reading on is blocked in the US and I can't quite figure out how the page numbers match up to where I'm reading, but I agree, Puck has some super great expressions and there are some really nice panels!
SHE DOES LOOK BADASS THOUGH!Enail wrote:Probably my first thought on seeing a murdered young woman possessed by demons, carrying her father's head in one hand and the sword that killed her in the other, shouldn't be that she looks kind of badass. There are going to be many moments like that murdered girl, where you cycle between "COOL " and "OH GOD NO " so fast that you get whiplash.
Really glad to hear that the grimdarkness of it is not tooooo oppressive, and that the meaty bits underneath are visible enough to catch your interest. You're like one volume away from getting to the past, where things are less grimdark, there are way fewer demons, and Guts is a sympathetic human character instead of Stoic Antihero Mean Jerk

...the box of physical Berserks in my room
I was looking at mangapanda, but their translations are kinda crappy too (are you getting the bad-English Comic Sans ones?). Mymanga.me looks like they might have the actual translated scans.

Re: Berserk
Aight, I'm gonna start the Berserk anime at some point over the next few days (I may have just fried my brain watching 20ish episodes of JoJo in 24 hours). I may or may not go episode by episode, we'll see. If I don't comment on something specific and you want to know just ask. Depending on how graphic or how that's handled I mayyy not totally stick with it, but we'll see. I think I've already heard of the worst thing or two that happens in it so I might already be properly steeled.
Werel, I have a mission for you. Synch up the start of the anime with wherever it starts in the manga so I know when to start reading Enail's stuff

Once she finishes volume 3, she'll be about at the end of the first anime episode. There's some stuff in manga volumes 1-2 that's cut out of the anime, but none of it's crucial. Uhhh here's a rough rubric for the first few, they don't correspond perfectly but I'm putting the boundaries at the big plot points:
Episode 1 = Volumes 1-3
Episodes 2-3 = Volume 4
Episodes 4 = Volume 3 + Volume 4 (some rearranged flashback stuff)
Episode 5-6 = Volume 5
Episode 7 = Volume 5-6
Episode 8 = Volume 6
Also, since you're watching the anime, you're in for way less graphic stuff than Enail. It might not be toooooo much for you, we'll see

Re: Berserk
For anyone else reading the manga, I found a better version on mangasaurus.com. (It goes by volume rather than numbering the chapters, so I'm switching my spoiler warnings to that format.)
AND NOW WE'RE ON TO THE GOLDEN AGE!
- Manga, the rest of Vol. 1 + Vol. 2-3:
-excellent, the chapter starts with a beheading, whew, I was worried no innocents would be decapitated this week, or that their skulls wouldn't be graphically crushed so the eyes pop out.
-Puck is kind of annoying, but I have to say, it needs the comic relief and innocence, so so far I'm slightly towards pro-Puck (how like me to be in-between on something that's 'either love it or hate it' )
-At last we're getting a teeny bit more information on the God Hand! This series is quite effective at starting with mystery and doling out information gradually without falling into the trap of too much mystery leading to confusion/frustration/indifference or the opposite trap of infodumps about things you barely even care about yet.
-yeeearrggghhhhh slime-demon mouth-to-mouth transfer. All worth it for the new power of disgusting demon body part-growing, I guess?
-Guts has a feeling!! It only took to the end of Ch 4, too! At this rate, I bet we'll see a facial expression within the year!
-The whole scene of Vargas's execution was very well done. It really has you thinking Guts will step in to stop the execution at the last second, but it's much more affecting watching his face as he doesn't do a thing.
Oh shit, big bad is a former friend turned demon? Welp, this series has got me. Betrayal is Enail catnip.
-Demon lady has a butt-window in her cape!?! There are no words.
-We got that facial expression
AND NOW WE'RE ON TO THE GOLDEN AGE!

- Manga 1-3:
That's one of the more "was that really necessary, jeeeez" moments of the early series. I think in the first few volumes the author was really trying to earn his place at the big boy seinen table through MEGA GORE, then he calms down and turns his attention to Plot and Thoughts and Feelings.Enail wrote:excellent, the chapter starts with a beheading, whew, I was worried no innocents would be decapitated this week, or that their skulls wouldn't be graphically crushed so the eyes pop out.

No. Stop. Don't consume extra Berserk and discuss it here. This is the opposite of what I want to happen. Re: Berserk
Berserk Episode 1 (I'm just kind of gonna be endlessly double-posting because I'm pretty much live-blog marathoning part of it and I don't want to lose too much to firefox derping or something)
- Spoiler:
- The Engrish intro and outro are amazing x)
- This opening bit with Colette makes me think of like Game of Thrones
- I love the blood sprays even in a 90s anime
- Hand pops off to be a gunnnnnn
- Our Black Swordsman buddy was a liiiiitle sadistic shooting that monster guy in the face so much <.<
So from what I'm gathering, this Griffith guy is an evil ruler and has some kind of Heavenly Authority with the usage of the words "Apostles" and that opening bit questioning if it was God that ruled destiny or something. And our Black Swordsman buddy (I'm assuming this is Guts, heretofore referred to as GATSOO) has went through awful shit and maybe made a deal with the devil to wreck these mother fuckers

Episode 2
- Spoiler:
- So am I already supposed to dislike Griffith(s)? Because I do. Ain't even because he apparently betrays GATSOO in the future <_<
- GAMBINO'S VOICE. Norio Wakamoto Perfect Cell's voice actor in DBZ and one of most distinctive Japanese voice actors out there
- I'm assuming by the "Don't touch me" stuff and the imagery from the flashback with Gambino that this is going into rape territory
- "No matter what, I will have what I want." Yiiiiikes, knowing that he's King later on

Episode 4
- Spoiler:
- Kind of wondering if Griffith has some kind of "see into someone's soul" type of power. Like his charisma is just recognizing what people need to get them to believe in him. They focused in on his eyes when he looked at GATSOO in the last few episodes, that description from that blonde guy who doesn't seem to able to put into words what Griffith is all about, and the whole "Tee-hee let's waterfight like children" thing doesn't seem as innocent as it is
- The Behelit just looked at Gatsoooooo
- "I will choose the place you die for me." Hrmmmmm
- Fuck, Gambino's voice <3
- Awriiight, fuck Gambino and his stupid bitterness (Wakamoto-san )

Episode 5
- Spoiler:
- Just fuck already, GATSOO and Griffith
- Also, just fuck already GATSOO and Casca
- I hope neither of those comes back to haunt me in the future
- Mannn, the way GATSOO mows down enemies and the Sega music in this show makes me think of a like side scrolling beat'em up video game
- Did Guts always have those fangs when he told Casca to get out the way so he can save Griffith? <.<

Berserk 6
- Spoiler:
- General Zodd took a wrong turn in the Phantom Zone and now he's going to fight anime guys (I'm so clever )
- Damn, man, Griffith took off Zodd's arm
- Of course he's now beating them both with his own dismembered arm
- Hrmmm, Zodd sees the Behelit, gets shocked and then has a good little laugh about it. That can't be good
- So when Griffith fails, Guts is gonna die?

Berserk 7
- Spoiler:
- Guts gonna beat up some Nobles
- This Eggman looking guy with one eye closed doesn't seem very trustworthy
- Tossing Royal Guards down stairs like whogivesafuck
- GATSOO BOWS TO NO MAN
- Griffith wants him some Charlotte, ruh roh
- I love that Guts was ready to cut Count Julius down then and there. Like, fuck his Noble status, King's brother status, General status, this guy just slapped my friend and I'm going to put him down x)
- Ahhhhh, Guts doesn't like "high places", he likes open sky so he can look at the moon and remind himself of the good old days when his father-figure tried to murder him and a pack of wolves almost ate him
- Immaturity alert: Guts just vowed to use his sword to fight for Griffith, but the way he's hold it makes it look like he's pointing his giant metal dick at the moon <___<

Berserk 8
Aight, 1/3rd of the series should be good for now, probably do more later tonight/tomorrow morning
BTW, if this is the Musou/Dynasty Warriors game, then it's kind of going to be top notch fan-service (not like boobs and stuff, but will pay extra special attention to detail for fans) and mindless hacking and slashing of legions of enemies (they kind of just surround you and once in awhile one or two them attack) and once in awhile large boss-type enemies. They've done adaptations of Gundam, Fist of the North Star, One Piece and Zelda using the Dynasty Warriors system before. It'll fit the large-scale battles I've seen so far in the anime but it may not be anything to write home about gameplay-wise (especially since you brought up Dark Souls)
- Spoiler:
- Sneaky, they don't expect anyone to attack them from behind so of course they'll open the gates for them
- Looks like the Eggman's got the Master Plan

Mmmmyep this is a very good insight. You'll be reminded of it when they start talking about bonfires. Huh, that's good to know. I have zero experience with Dynasty Warriors, and I've definitely been spoiled on gameplay by the Souls games, but I would... probably play it just for the fanservice.
