Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
They got in better thematic/character development than I'd expected from the early stuff, even if the graphics and some of the dialogue hold it back, some of the soldier stuff was pretty cliched, but the over-the-top-ness went far enough to make it fun and a wild ride, so not too shabby!

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
Awriiiiight, here we go
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
I did play this all the way through about 5 or 6 times but I only watched the cutscenes once so this isn't as drilled into my head as the gameplay is
Episode 1 (00:00:00-00:23:25, the last line is in a cut-scene "The colonel will be joining you soon, Comrade)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

Episode 1 (00:00:00-00:23:25, the last line is in a cut-scene "The colonel will be joining you soon, Comrade)
- Spoiler:
- Eyyyyy, Snake's got invisible camo now
- Doesn't seem to work too well though
- Eyyyyy Ocelot
- Eyyyyy Ocelot has an arm again
- Eyyyyy Otacon
- "Kept you waiting, huh?"
- They've gone private sector
- Metal Gears have proliferated
- Snap some juicy photos of the US Marines and their new anti-Metal Gear Metal Gear
- Philanthropy, a fringe United Nations group that sneaks around being the Metal Gear papparazzi
- Russians are attacking and hijacking US Marines
- Snake knows what type of Chopper it is just by hearing it
- I still have the fucking muscle memory from playing this like 3 or 4 times in a row so all these little gameplay segments are making me go "Okay, and [x] is next"
- Olga wants to fight even though she's preggers (I guess being out in the pouring rain with no jacket on is fine for the baby's health)
- I like that they went out of their way to show that Olga doesn't shave her armpit hair
- "Gurlukovich" was the name of Ocelot's Russian contact in MGS1 before Liquid decided to go totally rogue
- Tranquilizer darts probably aren't good for the baby either
- The US Army is spying on the US Marines?
- Might be a set-up
- Eyyyy Ocelot double-crossing the Russians already

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
MGS2, E1
Massive jump in quality and watchability from the last one!
- Spoiler:
-it's interesting having Snake as a 1st person narrator, it immediately seems more emotion-heavy and humanizing, makes it feel like he's the protagonist that you relate to and root for, not just a hero that you follow along with to playact being a badass. That's the kind of thing I tend not to notice, but here it made a very noticeable shift from what I was expecting going in.
-The directing seems a lot stronger too, the visuals are more striking and the sounds and all the camera stuff I don't understand or pay attention to but is still presumably contributing to the effect in ways people who notice that stuff would probably be noticing, it's really doing a good job of evoking atmosphere
-Ocelot got an arm somewhere!
-Gang's all back! And look at Otacon all calm and in charge now, they're not using him as comic relief/hating on their own fans anymore. And Snake seems a touch less grim, I like that they're letting them retain their character development
-"Philanthropy" as a name for a group makes them sound suuuuuuper evil.
-Russians are the only people who could possibly wear that hairstyle???
-And then they put on a Russian hat to make sure it's clear
-The modeling on Snake's face makes it look like he has a constant expression of "eww, what's that smell?"
-Olga'd very into fighting, maybe not so much into being pregnant
-huh, they gave her armpit hair. And really want to make sure you notice it.
-Boy, Olga needs a friend or something, the moment the gunfight starts she's immediately pouring out her life story and everything she cares about to the complete stranger who's shooting at her, totally unprompted
-Otacon didn't warn Snake they were following a suspicious tip based on nothing but the same initials as a step-sister he knew for 2 years
-this game has so much sneaking
-Ocelot's switching sides before we even know who the fuck these people he's double-crossing are
Massive jump in quality and watchability from the last one!

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
Yeah, even among Metal Gear Solid fans, Twin Snakes feels off compared to the rest of the series, mostly because the director who made the games gave someone else the job to remake it

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
Episode 2 (00:23:25 - 00:48:01, last line is "Don't alert them to your presence - that is an order.")
- Spoiler:
- There's a shit-ton of goofy easter eggs that happen during this speech. The guy giving the speech will accidentally re-read some of his lines, he'll give the soldiers a break, you can take photos of the projector feed and you'll see ghosts, you can change one of the projector feeds to a woman and the soldiers will watch her instead, you can start tranquilizing the soldiers from behind leading to rows of soldiers standing and sleeping (there's actually dog tag collectables in this game if you want to unlock extras and some of the soldiers in these rows have tags on them) and probably a bunch of other things I've forgotten.
- Same with the photo uploads. There's pin-up posters of cute girls in lockers on the upper decks that you can take pictures of (and kiss... and touch yourself to...) and if you take pictures of the and then upload them to Otacon, he'll get mad at you for it... but also save them. You can also take pictures of Olga while she's tranq'ed after the boss fight and Otacon will call you out for being a mega creeper (but also will save them).
- Whoops, sorry Russia, Ocelot wants Metal Gear Ray for himself
- Returned to THE PATRIOTS
- The La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo?
- Solidus
- Ocelot fires through his coat and kills the hostage and his comrade
- And he fucking wipes out the Russians in the blink of an eye
- Oh boy, here we go
- LIQUID
- OCELOT IS NOW LIQUID
- Ocelot grafted Liquid's arm onto his stump and now Liquid is part of Ocelot (so many people hated this)
- Metal Gear Ray is pretty sleek looking
- Mr President wanted pictures of Snake
- P. cool opening sequence
- Eyyyyyy Colonel Campbell
- Eyyyyyy... Snake?
- Dead Cell taking over The Big Shell
- Russians too :nono:
- Disarm C4s and get back the President
- Foxhound? But Snake killed them all (except Ocelot I guess) in the last game

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
E2
- Spoiler:
-the little pixel art Otacon, I guess he used those 7 minutes to make an avatar and animating it so he can give Snake a thumbs-up instead of spending it on trying to shut out the person listening in on them or investigating what's going on here
-Ocelot sure knows how to make an entrance
-Go Ocelot! Take over the takeover!!
-La-li-lu-le-lo? That's like the Japanese equivalent of calling something "m-n-o-p-q-r" or something. What does it mean??
-Feels like Ocelot's gotten a promotion to more important character, with that badass takeover
-what the FUCK??? Ocelot's new hand is Liquid's and it came with a split-personality share?!?? Holy fuck, this is awesome
-I like the lizard-like design of the new Metal Gear. They should really consider oiling these things, though.
-the scenes feel kind of choppy here
-oh hey, Campbell?
-I assume that's Snake and he didn't drown, and came back on board with military work, not just that they found someone with an eerily similar voice willing to take on the job
-getting the President of the US for a hostage is some top tier hostage-taking
I can see why people would hate the Liquid-arm split personality thing, but honestly, it made me totally excited for the rest of it, I wanna see what happens when you dive headfirst into the crazy science like that!

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
Episode 3 (00:48:01 - 01:10:04, a Navy SEAL gives a wave to someone leaving the room and then there's a close-up of his face as it fades out)
- Spoiler:
- Someone else got in before Snake did
- Eyyyyyy Raiden
- So this opening bit is meant to act as a refresher and a mini-tutorial. The Tanker section we just watched was originally released as the MGS2 demo and in MGS2 proper you could choose to skip that section of the game if you've already played it and go straight to this opening bit of the Big Shell
- Russians again
- Actually Gurlukovich mercs again.
- Oi oi oi, someone went ahead of Raiden
- Campbell telling you to touch nodes to activate radar maps, but then it electrocutes the living shout of you if you do it
- Rose-chama
- Raiden played MGS1 in VR training
- Raiden is Jack, Snake is David. Definitely not Snake
- Even though Campbell orders it, Rose does call you Jack quite often when you save. The save conversations generally consist of Rose trying to jog your memory of your past relationship together and the meaning of the day "April 30th"
- The Sons of Liberty
- Raiden is defffffinitely not Snake
- S-Solid Snake is the terrorist leader?!
- Campbell doesn't think there's a chance Snake survived the Tanker incident
- I don't know if I'd feel good about the Pentagon being in charge of this mission
- A bloody hallway, just like the Cyborg Ninja encounter in MGS1
- That was violent
- Drinking blood like a Vampire
- Like Liquid being Ocelot's arm, Vamp was another thing that was a step too far for some people when it came to MGS2.
- Eyyyy, thanks anonymous Navy SEAL!
- Lieutenant Junior Grade Iroquois Pliskin. Of course.
- Totally not Snake, guys
- Raiden doesn't know that FOXHOUND was disbanded, or Pliskin doesn't know that FOXHOUND was re-formed
- "Tactical IT Deployment" sounds like sending out a skinnyfat dude with a clip-on tie to cut off the enemy force's wifi.
- The footage they're using to represent Raiden's VR Training is from an MGS1 expansion disk that had a few hundred VR Missions on it.
- Pliskin doesn't make himself immediately known to Campbell
- Ex-President George Sears, the guy who was Pres during Shadow Moses
- FATMAN
- Pliskin confirms that Snake died two years ago. Seems legit.
- Pliskin with a very Snake-like reaction to the idea of legends
- Huh, Snake's body was actually positively ID'ed at the Tanker incident
- Pliskin's not reacting to the Navy SEAL communication lines

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
E3
- Spoiler:
-How is that Snake? It's clearly a different actor.
-Okay, they're giving him a different name, too, my best guess without any more info is that they're setting up a shock reveal that Snake actually did die in the last scene (or "die," I assume he'd still be coming back alive after all, or grated onto someone else's body or something other weird as hell form of resurrection) and we're playing someone different in this part. Maybe a clone or another genetic twin? Though, the voice sounds a little like Otacon trying to sound like Snake, too.
-Oh, wait, he's only completed virtual missions, I guess it's not setting up a surprise twist so much as something they're telling us outright and I'm just conspiracy theorizing for nothing . But why call him Snake at first, then?
-"Did you say nerd?" And sounds completely disappointed that it was "node." Is this Otacon?
-That massive shock and then carrying on like that was normal, do they give electroshocks for correctly following instructions in training too?
- all the spy game use of code names and changing names "as a precaution" but then he brings someone on who immediately repeatedly calls out his real name, good job, Campbell
-The guy who's out on a big mission with stealth and combat all up to him, based on his vast experience in VR training, is complaining that his analyst who'll be sitting safely at the other end of the line and combing through data isn't experienced enough in the field
-Uh-oh, did he forget their anniversary? ...and also the existence of their anniversary?
-New guy is super-pretty and his suit clings to his buttocks more than I want to see; sort of a weird contrast with Grizzled Serious Tough-guy Snake (though I guess Snake has a mullet, so he's a weird contrast with himself too)
-nope, it's a balletic vampire (probably not really)
-this game uses too much blur
-holy shit, I underestimated this game, it really is a vampire, this is fantastic
-Oh hello, Snake, good timing!
-The way he started to say his name was S-, I'd have thought we're clearly expected to understand that's really Snake, but then they pop up with the voice actor attached to the fake name he gave, which seems like they're taking it seriously so maybe we're not? Maybe they're just fucking with us and he's a more accurate clone that also has a name that begins with S? (Squishy Snake? Semi-Solid Snake? Supersolid Snake??)
-d-does Snake have a cockroach infestation
-"Realistic in every way" he says while showing us a wireframe maze room with shapes for targets, cute
-So between looking greenish and the cockroach, "Iroquois" seems kind of like he might actually be dead and just failed to stop moving anyway
-he's pretty well-informed on recent events for being dead, though
-Snake is dead and buried, and we totally shouldn't be suspicious of this guy who is definitely not Snake saying so, there's absolutely no way a guy with clones and mad science in his backstory could be ID'ed as dead and then not be (or be but have skipped being buried)
-ignoring his SEAL walkie-talkie
-Are they, like, anti-death cigarettes or something? Giving Raiden the cigarettes seemed weirdly meaningful.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
- Spoiler:
Snake brings a pack of lucky cigarettes with him on every mission (including at the beginning of Twin Snakes, when he went out of his way to sneak them in) and gameplay-wise they're usually useful in some fashion (exposing laser-trip-wires with the smoke, useful for calming Snake down when he's sniping etc.)
Whether Pliskin is actually Snake or not, a Snake-alike handing over the cigarettes is a way of bestowing main-character status on Raiden and by wishing him luck in completing his mission.
(also, a fun little factoid, "Pliskin" is a similar name of the main character of the movie Escape From New York... Snake Plissken

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
Episode 4(01:10:04 - 01:36:15, last line is a codec conversation "I'll stand by until you radio in.")
- Spoiler:
- I dunno Rose, probably should tell him what you want to tell because Raiden could die on this mission by tomorrow
- The bullets are missing Fortune
- TBH if I'm Raiden and I just saw every bullet and grenade miss Fortune and her blow up a bridge with her big gun, I get on the codec and go "Nope, fuck that, I'm not doing this anymore, peace out"
- Kind of cold of Campbell to be like "Well, we lost some choppers and Seals but you got in pretty sneaky!"
- Raiden wondering how any of this bullshit can be real
- Eyyyy Plisken
- Fatman
- Built an atom bomb when he was 10, I love the ridiculous backstories for people in MGS games
- Hmmmm, a skinny guy with glasses came along too
- "Who Dares, Wins" is a British Special Air Services motto. Plisken's a SEAL, whose motto should be "The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday."
- "Semper Fi" is the US Marines. Plisken's definitely not a SEAL guys
- Easter Egg: Once you finish talking to Stillman, if you walk in the direction that Plisken said he was moving in, you'll see him shuffling forward with a cardboard box over top of him, the same thing you can do as Snake in MGS1.
- Eyyyy a Russian lady talking about Cyborg Ninjas
- Eyyyyy Olga
- Are you sure it wasn't an Arsenal Tengu (fuck I hate those things)
- Olga with the cool side flip
- Deepthroat/Mr X sure has an interesting accent
- I think the MGS1 Deepthroat said "I'm one of your fans" too
- Rose and Jack met by having a nerdfight in public
- Stillman was faking his limp and losing leg so he wouldn't have to face the families of all the dead people in his big fuck-up
- There's a bigger bomb set up.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
E4
- Spoiler:
- it's pretty bold making the new guy such a whiney, arrogant noob, given that people are already going to feel kind of robbed at not playing Snake. They're not afraid to push things where in the last game they'd hew more tightly to the kind of structure and development you'd expect; I'm interested to see where they'll go with it.
-the Fortune woman wearing a long coat over a swimsuit makes her look like more like a flasher than anything sexy. Also, that pale lipstick with a tan is so late 90s/early 2000s, and not in a good way
-A maybe-vampire queen with magical powers of luck and melancholy sax soloes, this is all so extra!
-poor seagull. But seagulls aren't as cool if she's gonna do the same connection-with-birds thing Vulcan Raven did
-Iroquois looks way less green now, maybe he's not a zombie, hopefully that'd mean he doesn't have a cockroach infestation either
-"why did they bring you out of retirement, then" This kid is so snotty
-10-year-old built an atom bomb, of course he did
-oh no, is that Otacon?
-Iroquois using that wrong motto almost seemed like he was trying to be caught out. I'm enjoying all the mystery around him (when it doesn't involve cockroaches)
-a sword ninja, surely not Grey Fox again?
-"Why would it matter if I called you Deepthroat?" Might kind of up the age rating, for one thing (seriously, though, two things that ping for Grey Fox in short succession seems like it's pushing too hard, so makes me think it's more likely to be a fakeout). OTOH, another should-be-dead person running around would sure fit in with everything else here
-huh, Raiden remembers the same first meeting that Rose does, so it's not that they had a whole relationship prior to what he remembers. I guess the missing memory she keeps asking about isn't just going to be their anniversary or something else innocuous on those lines just meant to introduce the idea that he's got a memory gap. ...actually, given everything else going on in this game, maybe the date she keeps talking about is the anniversary of when she died. Though, she's real to Campbell, so that's probably too much of a stretch even for this game.
-their dialogue reminiscing is so stiff, once again these writers suck at writing romance
-they "watched King Kong," multiple times, did they?
-he faked that he lost his leg?? For five years?? That's one hell of a thing to fake for that long, someone would almost certainly have insisted on seeing it or accidentally seen it by now. And walking like that all this time would have massively destroyed his muscle tone and probably damaged his other knee from the limping too, so I don't really buy that he'd be able to go running around all over the place at the drop of a hat, either. And even if it makes people feel sorry for him, losing a leg isn't really enough to avoid consequences or having to face the victims, so it's shaky as a psychological choice, too.

As soon as I saw Stillman I remembered and was like "Wuh oh, Enail's gonna have a thing or five to say about this one."
Some of your other speculation is why I was way more interested to see what you thought about things in this game

I'm not too fussed if I do get spoilers, anyway, I'm pretty sure the conversation where you convinced me to watch it started off with telling me a bunch of spoilers and then deciding it'd be easier to just make me watch it then explain all of it. They don't really stay in my head without context, so I'll probably still be surprised.

Ahhh gotcha. I hope you enjoy it, right now Dark Souls has usurped the title of “Mikeys Favorite Game”, MGS was the reigning champ for the better part of a decade and a half.

Oh man, what is it about Peace Walker that people like? I did not like that title at all. I played it with the HD remasters eons ago. Anyway I getcha, i won’t spoil anything.

Depending on the thing, I’m the same way. A friend of mine spoiled GoT that way but I didn’t know much about it, so it didn’t spoil much for me.

It's mostly that I love bite-sized missions and base-building. Also the character cast was my favourite. I do recognize the weaknesses (way too many vehicle missions and there was no wacky enemy team)

Episode 5 (01:36:15-02:02:56, last line is a codec conversation, "Your priority is to contact Agent Ames")
- Spoiler:
- Whoops, defusing the small bombs activated the big bombs
- Aw, Stillman
- Eyyyy Fortune (Lucky in war and nothing else)
- (Fun strategy, if you hide under a cardboard box, you can shuffle back and forth along the back wall and mostly avoid Fortune's shots pretty easily)
- Eyyyy Vamp
- The shots rebounded off Fortune and hit Vamp right in the middle of the forehead
- (I like Fortune's crooning jazz theme)
- Yes, a fat man in a trenchcoat rollerblading around with a glass of wine (and a straw, to indicate his immaturity)
- He doesn't know about the ransom demands
- LAUGH AND GROW FAT
- Sneaky, he was wearing the biggest bomb
- Campbell's not accepting other calls right now
- Pliskin hasn't heard about the toxins being stored in the Big Shell
- He also doesn't have orders to rescue the President, despite being a Marine
- EYYY CYBORG NINJA
- A message from the La-Li-Lu-Le-Lo
- "We" don't know, says the Cyborg Ninja
- Dead Cell has a nuke
- Wuh oh, The Big Shell isn't an oil contamination clean-up plant
- METAL GEAR?!
- Big Shell is a Metal Gear R&D center
- Campbell says he didn't know about the Metal Gear either
- The right arm of Solid Snake's body was missing, but it's a genetic match.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
E5
- Spoiler:
-kaboom
-Flasher Vampire Queen and the Cockroaches would kinda make a good band name. But what is the deal with the cockroaches? Seems like it's got to be something to do with death, anything else isn't dramatic enough
-She was expecting Snake, I guess? Who's her father, then?
-the music in this fight scene, I feel like I should be at a cartoon disco
-I've got to say, of a bomber, a vampire and a prenaturally lucky but wants to get killed saxophone queen, I would not have expected the one to go rogue and do something crazy to be the bomber
-Good shot, Raiden! But I lol'd at the way he shouted "NOW!" while doing it, like he feels like someone has to give him the order to do anything important, even if it's himself.
-Bounced off Fortune, goodbye Vamp. That was a little too quick, though, we hardly knew him and no dramatic dying words, makes me think he's gonna come back to life
-that crazy laugh
-hm, a second father-daughter storyline
-wow, they really should not do closeups of someone sobbing if they're that unable to change the facial expressions
-yup, Vamp's back to life, because he can't die twice (kind of like the prisoner recently arguing his life sentence is over b/c he technically died and was ressucitated, but I wouldn't have thought that kind of loophole would work on forces of nature)
-Fatman's on roller blades This is edging into Batman villain territory
-Fatman saying "they'll be happy too," what 'they?' We established that Dead Cell didn't want this...
-"Ugh, I have to save the president? But moooomm, we don't even know where he is!" Raiden's such a whiney teenager
-Pliskin had a little help from a friend (oh god, they say cockroaches can survive bomb blasts, what if the cockroaches are his friend and he's become some sort of cockroach person??? I might be getting a little paranoid about the cockroaches )
-Both Pliskin and Fatman are strangely out of their respective loops
-Grey Fox, Russian edition?
-he's a third party with a message from La-li-lu-le-lo
-Raiden didn't know about Metal Gear here, and Campbell claims he didn't either
-Oho, it's really Snake's corpse, but the arm is missing, I guess they grafted it onto a clone or something, like Liquid's arm on Ocelot.

Re: Metal Gear Solid Watch-along
