Winter Anime Season 2021
The Chart
Seasons at the earliest seem to start in two weeks
Without reading any synopsiseseseseses:
EndlessA. Pokemon 2019
EB. One Piece
Continuing 1. Black Clover
C2. Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season
C3. Digimon (assuming it's continuing)
1. Yakusoku no Neverland Season 2
2. Dr Stone - Stone Wars
3. JuJutsu Kaisen (I like the characters, the outro is amazing and the powers are cool, but I do find the social commentary and obsession with western movie fandom a bit meh)
4. Yuru Camp - Season 2 (Also easily droppable, but I like a chill slice-of-life every season and Season 1 was really chill)
5. Jaku-chara (I accidentally read the synopsis and this might be interesting)
6. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 2 (maybe, I skipped the OVAs and while I enjoyed the first season, this is easily droppable if the season is too "busy")
7. That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Season 2 (maybe, I skipped the OVAs and while I enjoyed the first season, this is easily droppable if the season is too "busy")

If the Slime one is easily droppable, why did you put it on twice?
I haven't checked it out yet, but with Shingeki no Kyojin and Neverland, I'm probably not going to manage a third one.

I was moving JuJutsu Kaisen up the list so all the continuations were together and musta copy+pasted twice

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Yeah, a quick glance isn't showing me anything I'd be that into checking out in an empty season, definitely nothing that would make me want to cram a third one in. The only one that caught my attention at all was Wonder Egg Priority, and that's only b/c it sounds weirdly similar to something in Shoujo Kakumei Utena that makes me wonder if it's an intentional reference and it's gonna build on that. I don't know if I'll have time to check it out, so I might just keep an eye on reviews to see if that turns out to be true.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Yakusoku no Neverland S2 E1
- Spoiler:
- HORRIFYING MONSTER ALREADY
- That visual in the opening with the kids eating rabbit
- Ray guilty about Emma's ear
- WHOA HOLOGRAM
- Morse Code instructions
- HUMAN
- Flora and fauna looking kinda alien
- Fucking YO, the children's stories were survival guides
- STRESSED OUT
- Ohhhh dear, demon hunters are here
- Yeah, Emma's ear looks like it's bleeding more
- Eyyyyyyy human on a horse
- I dunno guys, they could be witches looking to cook you and eat you too
- "Why are Demons saving humans" WUH OH
Still in the "I dunno, man" phase of this.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Yakusoku S2E1
- Spoiler:
-Out in the world of monsters
-Creepy new OP imagery
-one of the demons in the OP's in a hood's face under the hood looks like a child
-At the end of it, Emma and Ray are standing in a 3-person pose with the 3rd spot left blank to make you think of Norman
-the dragonfly fish
-Being the cheerful leader's already starting to weigh on Emma, but Ray promises to share the load and not check out again.
-A hologram map, Norman really didn't slack off in the present department
-the feel of everything is different now, the way they're explaining to everyone how their tools work, with even the little kids crowding around, there's no more secrecy
-Emma's face when she accidentally sets all the kids off being upset by mentioning Norman , she and Ray (and maybe Gilda and Don) just face the awful stuff and pretty much accept it to the point where she's surprised everyone else is so fragile. Seems like the secrecy this season might be more about keeping the kids from being too traumatized, rather than secret plans. Emotionally stressful for the characters but not as compelling.
-the books gave them useful survival info for the outside
-All the little kids terrified except that one little one who just starts snarling like she's ready to cut a demon
-I love seeing all their little plans and preparations that even Emma and Ray didn't know about
-all it takes is a lantern to decapitate them? They're not so tough. Though, they don't have many lanterns to spare.
-oh shit! Emma!
-oh no, Ray
-rescued!
-they don't trust creepy hooded girl. It's kind of nice to have a show where the characters are as suspicious as the viewers, less shouting "nooo, don't go in there!" into the void
-whuh-oh, she's a demon
-From the ending animation, looks like those two are demons outside of the group and probably friendly or semi-friendly. Sympathetic enough to be worth a peaceful ending animation about their daily lives, at least. That kind of ruined the cliffhanger.
It's not quite the same without the constant tension of trying to make plans under Mama's nose with the limited resources of an orphanage, but I feel like it's going somewhere with this and still probably knows what it's doing emotionally, so I'm fairly optimistic so far even if I'm not sure about getting into friendly demons and shit.

I would recommend skimming through Project Scard - Scar on the Praeter's first episode just to check out the visuals and the style on it.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E2
- Spoiler:
- The demons being super casual about accidentally getting lost and directing the kids in the right direction all while the kids are terrified they're being eaten
- Hmm, the demons are praying with their food like the humans do
- They don't eat humans because they're religious. How kosher
- Brutal, half the humans in the world were left behind to be farmed so there's no more demons vs humans
- And instead of falling into ZETSUBOU, the kids are hyped because it means there's a world to escape to (even though they definitely won't take them back)
- Ray's message maybe led the demons right to Minerva?
- Comfy survival training in deep tree-root caves
- Gilda as the group's psycho-mom
- The kids razzling Ray because he keeps trying to kill himself
- Emma wants to learn how to kill
- The fucking flowers that the demons eat with.
- They suck out the blood and preserve the meat, and also serve as an offering
- And they have to be put in while they're still alive
- Emma's eyes looking a little deader when she came back
I'm still not so hot on the setting change because it feels like the tension's not quite the same, but there's some really good characters moments at least

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E2
Thanks for getting me to check out Project Scard, it really is cool-looking! The backgrounds feel like they're gonna be a little too cg, but then land up having a kind of detailed sharpness that's quite striking, plus the use of patterns and texture and the magic effects looks great, and the action is sharp too. The character design is a little bit CLAMP. I don't think I'd watch this one, though, the characters and non-action scenes were boring. The visuals sure make me want to like it, though.
I did land up checking out Wonder Egg Priority too. It's really weird, lots of dream-like creepiness, gets pretty dark, kind of reminds me of an non-sexual/middle school version of Gleipnr in some ways; other than being weird I don't think there's any Utena resemblance, but I'm actually quite into it so far. Not sure I'd be able to keep up on this as well as the other two, but I might give it a try.
- Spoiler:
-Emma and Ray being freaked out by how quickly the kids accept the demons; I guess they're the only ones who actually saw demons killing and eating children, so to the others, the demons are kind of just random friendly monsters
-I'm not that into developing the demon world, but religious reasons is a better reason than the generic "these ones are just good people horribly tormented by their desire" kind of thing, especially since the other ones seemed to have religious shit going on with eating the best brains
-humans sacrificing the people on half the world to the demons for a truce, and breeding them for food is their humane "no-hunting" alternative. I'd like to see this get tied in with the Mama system, the emotional factor of this kind of complicity.
-and they're thrilled because the horrible situation is so much better than they'd hoped .
-Gilda is scary
-I kind of wish they hadn't given all the other characters such side-charactery designs, I find it hard to see Gilda or any of the others as equally real people to Emma and Ray.
-even the little kids exasperatedly complaining about Ray's suicidal tendancies like it's on par with "he's such a slacker" or something and he's so outraged but it's not like he can really argue Guilt-tripping too. The little ones don't really come off as full characters so much as one collective character, but they're kind of hilarious as that.
-Emma wants to learn to kill.
-vampiric flowers that show god's accepted your kill. So the creepy symbolic flowers are basically just kosherness. Feels like they answered a little more question than they should have there, too much subtext into text
-Emma's 'prayer,' and then stabbing the flower in while the bird's still alive, crying for the kids who died this way, this is pretty brutally sad
-that orange-lit emptiness in Emma's eyes afterwards
It's still engaging and they're doing good stuff with the characters, so it's not like I'm not into it still, but I really am missing the intensity and cleverness of the orphanage setting, those plans you didn't see coming that knock you flat, the pressure of always being watched, seeing under the surface of familiar things they took for granted. This is a little more ordinary-feeling a story even though they're still using the emotional punches effectively.

I watched the first few minutes of Wonder Egg, I'm gonna catch up on it once the month is out and we don't have unlimited internet any more.

I pretty much had the same reaction, I probably would've watched a few more episodes in a less-busy season but yeah

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E3
- Spoiler:
- "Shoot at the eyes" while the demons have their eyes covered
- Sonjuu pretty sinister, he does want to eat humans but the only Kosher way to do it is if they're "natural"
- But he is slaughtering other demons to keep them safe
- This secret base is kind of too good to be true? Like it looks like a farm and kind of functions the same way as one, it keeps everyone well fed and safe
- "HELP" "This is William Minerva" THAT CLIFFHANGER WAS DIRTY

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E3
- Spoiler:
-Emma looking at photos of the little kids they left behind, everyone being sad about Norman, I like the way they keep reminding you of their heart back in the orphanage and how it was a happy place other than that minor being killed and eaten bit
-Sonju just wants them to escape for a breeding population of wild humans because wild humans are kosher as long as it's sustainable. He's fine with killing demons to make that happen, though. So he's a radical environmentalist, I guess?
-"Welcome unlocked" after everyone but Ray had run off seems somehow ominous
-there's a garden and everything, are they meant to actually stay here long-term? I thought it was just a safehouse along the way. This is way too good to be true
-I don't think I've ever seen that redhead piano kid before, where'd he come from
-Secret room!
-are they not gonna show where the tunnel goes? I guess it's probably an escape tunnel
-the one kid that just starts crying in the bath. It does feel like things have been way too easy so far, it's just a regular adventure journey feel, I assume there's gonna be some kind of trouble at the end of the episode, but if they don't seriously up the threat and tension without easy resolutions like we've gotten so far it's gonna get boring.
-Ray whispering what "organic matter" means and Don just blurts out "poop???"
-Terrifying cribbles on the wall, oh fuuuuck. There's the tension I asked for.
-Minerva on the phone
-DON'T STOP THERE

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E4
- Spoiler:
- "To anybody who's reading this, Don't give up!" So the HELP room wasn't "HELP WE'RE ALL DYING" but "Help these people out if you can"?
- William Minerva not technically breaking the law, just helping them out
- I think I hate the kid who woke everyone up
- Comfy tunnel days
- Kids, don't play in freaky catacombs
- These two kids (the blonde and black haired kid) are going to blow the whole mission at some point
- RIP Piano kid
- Ahahahahaha, the kids just need the "IT'S DELICIOUS" to dig in
- Jailed Mama
- OH NO
- HUMANS
- GRAB HIS GUN, DON
- Mama's pride that her kids WILL get away
- Tricky kids got the adult to tell them that "shelters are always like this"
- WHOOPS GIANT MONSTER
- EYE SHOT
- Mama is 100% being lied to about her freedom and she's probably gotta know that, but she still wants to see her children

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E4
- Spoiler:
-"affiliated with the farms" - so there is a collaboration option for men too
-The journal telling them not to give up. Does that mean the HELP was "help these kids" rather than a creepy horror room? That's a bit of a cheat, I was all geared up for something HORRIFYING
-a way to get to the human side
-how are we supposed to move on to this peaceful scene of making a home for themselves here when I'm not over the HELP not being creepy.
-cheerfully drawing lots for someone to test if it's poisonous. And then they have three people do it, sure, why not risk killing 3?
-Half an hour is definitely not long enough to wait
-Woah! Isabella in demon jail!
-What the FUCK
-oh fuck!
-there goes their safe base. That many humans working for the demons, too.
-shit, Don and the little kid are still out there
-doesn't want to see the kids before being executed out of shame - for having been planning all their deaths all this time, or for failing at it? But she's sure they'll get away.
-smart kid, now they know there's other (known) shelters. It can't be a hideaway, but at least it's potential sources of food and maybe information if they can risk staying at one long enough to use the radio.
-That was a convenient fucking monster demon
-great shot, Ray!
-Never send a demon to do a Mama's job, I guess
-Freedom and something else. Maybe Ray's freedom too? I kind of think she's more doing it to be the one to catch the kids, or maybe out of some twisted form of love to reunite with them, seems unlikely they'd just let her go.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
The next Attack on Titan's wasn't out yet when I was going to watch it, so I got in another ep of Wonder Egg Priority
- Spoiler:
Having to fight wacked-out personifications of people's traumas, this is getting pretty Persona. There's this weird sort of fucked-up, wistful rhythm to this show, like a monster-of-the-day kinda magical girl thing but sort of backwards, traumatized teenage girls briefly having a glimmer of friendship with suicided girls they try and save in a dream-world but they vanish, and then awkwardly trying to replicate how befriending works out in the real world with other traumatized girls trying to save other suicided girls. I'm liking it so far. If it manages to keep developing the characters meaningfully and doesn't get too pat or too repetitive, it could be a good one.

Huh, I wouldn't have said it was much like Paranoia Agent. I guess kiiind of if it was a magical girl show? Still wouldn't have been top of mind as a comparison.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
So apparently, Neverland fans are kind of mad because this week's episode (I haven't watched it, simul-buddy is free on the weekend) cut an entire arc out of the manga. Some people are even comparing it to the last season of Tokyo Ghoul: re, which I tried to watch but it was one of those anime compilation movies where the story is on fast-forward.

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
S2E5
- Spoiler:
- Pickled kid heads
- A demon town
- Hmmm, so other farms are being attacked too?
- Speaking of farming, the kids have themselves a decent set-up going
- Seems like a bit of a risk for all the leader-kids to be scouring and scavenging for food
- This old Priest definitely knew it was human kids there.
- Huh, so the monsters are degenerating or wasting away because they're not eating enough human meat
- Eyyyyyy the kids can do crouching tiger hidden dragon moves
- WHOA @ death-slicing those demons
- WHOA @ THE VOICE
- Annnnnnd we're cliffhanger'ed
The setting's back to having lost me, especially since it seems like we discarded Minerva, but STORMIN NORMAN back in play is interesting as fffuuuuu

Re: Winter Anime Season 2021
Neverland S2E5
- Spoiler:
-Demons just living their normal life, demon kids running around, food stalls with jars of hands. M-maybe they're gonna land up aiming for humane, sustainable human-eating being okay in the end and they just need to find a way to coexist peacefully with only a reasonable number of people being killed? 0_o Or maybe just restricting the demons to only eat non-sentient food, which would be a less interesting choice.
-it's been a year, I guess they are doing a time-skip
-they've got an underground base, things are tougher than before but they're mostly managing
-the older kids admitting to each other they're struggling too much to rescue the others
-Emma beating herself up for having brought them all out here (and talking to herself )
-they probably shouldn't let the mischievious pair come with
-Doesn't seem smart that all the leaders go out at the same time, either
-old blind demon just wanders through and thinks they're a bunch of demon kids
-Emma goes right up and helps the demon
-the way it opened its mouth like eating, but then didn't do anything else, it totally knew
-regular demons are near-starving because they don't get farm food, towns are shutting down
-Demon kids are wasting away for lack of human meat. Sonju and Mujika seemed okay, maybe it's only the young or the already-ill that need it?
-kind of pathetic that the two mischievious kids can catch all that and the four oldest can barely bring home half a basket of mushrooms between them
-Definitely shouldn't have brought them
-uh-oh, they're being followed. It's totally gonna be Isabela, isn't it.
-or other free humans, since they're helping?
-SLICE, goodbye demons just trying to save their kids, jeez
-NORMAN! we knew he had to be alive, but honestly, this seems like a waste of a place to put the big reveal, I've been waiting for it at a massive gut-punch moment. I'm glad he's back but I feel like last season would have used it so much better, seems like a sign of exactly how they're losing their touch.
