Cosplay!
I do not cosplay but some of my friends do and I absolutely love looking at the craft and creativity of cosplay, so I thought a thread to share projects you really like or (if you are one of those talented crafting folk that I envy) share tips and tricks, frustrations, etc.
I love this shoot even though I think that Disney princesses are the root of much evil: http://geekxgirls.com/article.php?ID=3954
And I am in awe of my Polski siostrzyczka: https://m.facebook.com/ShappiWorkshop?_rdr

Re: Cosplay!
Oooooo can I post pictures of my attempts at cosplay?! I never learned to sew, but my mom is a whiz and loves fun little projects so if I get an idea, she'll help make it. (Much love for awesome mamas!) And what can't be sewn, I just play at the thrift store. That still counts, right? Some cosplayers are a little more strict, it seems. I 'unno. They do them. I'll do me.
Anyway, COSPLAY!
My attempt at Gozer the Gozerian. Many people mistook me forZodd (EDIT: ZUUL. Oop at me ^.^')Eh, it happens. One distinguished person at the convention said I looked like a Christmas ornament. I'll take it!
One of these days I wanna whip up an Utena cosplay. That anime is my favorite. <3

Re: Cosplay!
I didn't sew the costume, but I did spend the months before the convention growing out my bangs. Unfortunately the store I bought the cloak and accessories from closed down recently.
Wow. Hard to believe this is almost 7 years old.

Re: Cosplay!
Whoa nice Gozer cosplay! I like the Akatsuki coat as well.
I am always blown away at the talent of those at various con's and impressed at the hard work and dedication it must take to put together an well made outfit.
Personally I have a hankering to try a couple of ideas. My first idea that I have had to table for now due to complexity is the Big Daddy from Bioshock.

I'm also leaning toward doing a Gender Bend Korra.

Re: Cosplay!
I finally have a chance to make a cosplay of Souren Araya from Kara no Kyoukai since I might be going to a Con in June.
I still can't source a good cassock-like coat though. Technically, it's a sherwani or similar I need but they are very difficult to find A) in Australia with ease B) in just plain black.
Everything else I have, really. Well, I have black shoes and not brown. I can work with that though.

Damn.
It's not a Ghost Rider cosplay if you can't at least set your head on fire.

Re: Cosplay!
If you have suggestions on how to achieve that, I'd be happy to do a Ghost Rider. Might be a bit impractical in the con hall, though.

Re: Cosplay!
After going to Vegas Comic Con, I have come to the realization that Nightwing doesn't get nearly enough love in the cosplay community. I guess everyone wants to be Batman. The thing is, Nightwing is one of those characters who is always depicted in a suit better describes as body paint. Does anyone have experience with "cape" costumes and suggestions for how to get a good look? I'm kind of waffling between starting from a motorcycle racing suit with padding that gives it a faux-muscle look and finding a good airbrush artist to give the standard lycra suit some detailing that looks like comic book line work.

Re: Cosplay!
I've never tried anything spandexy, but air-brushing may be the way to go there.
My current projects are Ozma of Oz, a Librarian of the Clayr (Abhorsen series), and Joy (Inside Out), but they're still all in the early planning stages. I've been looking into solarpunk aesthetics for Ozma. I really like AU cosplay. I did a punk Midsummer Night's Dream with my SO last year that I think was pretty fantastic. I was Titania and ze was Bottom.

At some point I wanna cosplay MGSV's Big Boss.
But that requires a beard. Dammit!

Pretty much what I'm thinking. Did a skeleton zentai a few years back where my girlfriend and I had to take turns laying down with it on while someone painted the skeleton on. Took about eight combined hours of painting to do both sides. This'll wind up being basically the same thing. Less square footage to cover but more detail. Its also a little. . .awkward to ask anyone but a good friend to do.
You rock the Titania!

Re: Cosplay!
Thaaaat sounds like a pain. Yeah, you'll need a pretty chill friend for some of the Nightwing detail.
Worst thing I've ever worked with was white pleather for EVE (my other couple cosplay with the SO, who was my WALL-E). That is shit to sew.
My crown has lights! And I need to actually put it on again and do more extensive photography to get all the details, because I put a ton of work into that. Like, it says "Queen" across the back of my vest between the wings, which flap when I walk (purely coincidental and thanks to physics, not by design), and my other arm has a fake tattoo sleeve of cute little fairies and all my buttons, etc.
The skeleton sounds fun - what was it for?

It was a group set that we used for a few events. It wound up being my girlfriend's costume as spotter for my quad stilt costume.

Oooh, red and gold. Neat. That quad costume is intense. Is the head built around a horse skull?
