Re: Entertainment Joys
Finally getting around to finishing off Naruto Shippuden after leaving it for so many years (and somehow avoiding spoilers).
I have approximately 65 non-filler episodes to go to complete the manga (it's hard to fucking tell because it's strangely difficult to find a filler list that gets it completely right), and like another 20ish for Light Novel Adaptations and two movies for the rest of the Shippuden era canon... and then Boruto if I end up liking that
But watching Shippuden again reminded me how much I loved how unapologetically Japanese-y Naruto is/was. Giant mythological beasts, nerdy hand-movements, scrolls, sealing tags, flower kimonos, Japanese pro wrestlers (I legit laughed until I cried when I first saw Killer Bee).
Dragon Ball Z Kai came out around 2012ish and created a close adaptation to the manga, removing most of the filler and extension filler and roughly cutting the series down to about 1/2 of the size. What's also cool is that a very nerdy fan re-edited a Naruto Kai version together too. They removed all the intros and outros (Boooo), filler arcs (yayyyy, Shippuden is legitimately almost 50% filler episodes), extension filler (Naruto especially fills time using flashbacks) and then cut everything together by volume. Apparently some of the "episodes" can be up to an hour and a half long, so it's still pretty lengthy, but it cuts down Naruto and Shippuden down from aproximately 720 episodes to under the length of 300ish full episodes.
I bring it up because I do plan on watching Shippuden again down the line (I've watched/read through the original Part 1 of Naruto probably a combined 4 or 5 times so it's not super-necessary), but I may just try out this Naruto Kai business whenever I do that (probably years from now)

Re: Entertainment Joys
>that feel when when the original Big Three anime watch project I decided to do years ago is "done"
Asterisks to it of course
- I didn't watch the last canon arc of Bleach, but that was like 20 episodes and then anime got cancelled. I want to rewatch Bleach and then finish the manga one day but it was far and away the lesser of the Big Three for me. It's not "done" but I basically already saw the climax of the major storyline that built Bleach into a big-name thing.
- One Piece is still week-to-week so it's not "done" but it's also not built-up
- I've finished all the Naruto manga canon, but Naruto canon gets a bit like Dragon Ball Super afterwards. Some light novels were adapted during the Shippuden anime that the original writer liked so much that he more or less called them canon, he worked on a movie that followed afterwards, and Boruto is overseen by him but not written specifically by him. So it's all official and I'm going to watch most of it (Boruto's still ongoing, it's about another 80 episodes and a movie of things, not gonna watch the Boruto movie because the anime is adapting it) but for all intents and purposes I've finished the original story
That's gotta be in the 1200-1300 episode range

Re: Entertainment Joys
"I guess I'll try Yakuza Kiwami on PS4" and now 8 hours later I fist-fought my way out of a Yakuza funeral, had my rival dress up as a cop and "pat me down" for weapons (that he told me to carry) so he could start a fight with me, and now I'm trying to date a lesbian Cabaret hostess just to see what happens (and burning through my cash very quickly while doing it). I also played a child at a lewd arcade card game, got involved in an RC Car race circuit and swung a bicycle at some street punks, and was afraid to go to into the Shogi and Mahjong Parlors just in case the mini-games are absorbing. I think I just got scouted to be a gigolo but half of everything in this game is a scam that ends in a fistfight so we'll see
This game is ridiculous

Re: Entertainment Joys
Update: The Lesbian Cabaret Girl texted me to tell me that she was available. I showed up and instead was greeted by my fistfighting rival in drag. Rather than fistfight, we're both playing along with the set-up and having a flirty conversation and discussion about our lives.
Update 2: We ended up fistfighting in the alley afterwards. He was still in drag.

Patrick Stewart's going to be back in Star Trek in a new series about Picard's post-TNG life! Not too optimistic after Discovery, but still, Picard

I'm imagining a grumpy retired Admiral Picard trying to find a quiet nook to read his antiquated books but he keeps randomly bumping into Star Trek characters and he's too polite to tell them to fuck off so he can have some quiet.

That feel when it's 2018 and you're playing Journey and there's still random players playing Journey
Popped a few unexpected multiplayer trophies while Journey'ing with a person (I sat down to meditate and they tried to push me off a ledge too)

Re: Entertainment Joys
This last week of DC TV has been really great. Agent Liberty, Zoom, Thawne, the new Green Arrow's identity, a Smallville Easter Egg potentially making Arrowverse canon (I never saw it but the nerds are going apeshit over it), THE ANTI-MONITOR/CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS REFERENCE
And then next-week we get a kooky crossover where everyone's switched places in their own continuities and it's supposed to lead into an eventual Batwoman TV series.

Into the Spider-verse was fantastic! The way it took elements of comics style and storytelling and turned them into animation felt like suddenly developing new senses or existing in an extra dimension, just an explosion of expression in a form you didn't realize you could feel.

I agree! I saw the flick last week and it was incredible, both visually and in terms of story.
Re: Entertainment Joys
YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS (or Young Justice Season 3, basically) has been excellent. There definitely is an uptick in some of the violence and gore from what Cartoon Network would have let fly in 2013, but it's still nowhere near as graphic as some of the DCU animated movies that hit blu-ray. The kid gloves are off and Greg Weisman and company have really upped their game. The mid-season finale was great and I can't wait for the rest this summer!
