What's your new years resolutions?

Post by Archetype694 on Mon Jan 04, 2016 1:51 am

I realize this thread is a tad late but I thought it would be fun to see what everyone was looking forward to or planning in 2016. Smile

If I have overlooked this same idea in another thread please delete or merge.

1) Love More: Of myself and others. Life can be painful.. but it can also be wondrous and amazing. With the risk of pain comes the possibility of discovering new potentially awesome people and things.

2) Open myself to sharing my passions, and with it my vulnerabilities: Be less afraid of rejection. It is ok that some may not care for me, if I search hard and long enough, perhaps I will find others that do like what I have to offer.

3) Give More: Whether that be willing to lend a hand, or finding ways I can be of use to others.

4) Be Bold: Seek adventure, seek knowledge, and look for new skills to learn.

5) Remember to be thankful. The effort and affection of others had a huge part in shaping me into who I am today. I hope in my own way to pay forward the love shown to me.

6) Become stronger: Continue training, and look for opportunities to expand my skill. I wish to be a Kung Fu Panda!

7) Build a Arduino robot!

Re: What's your new years resolutions?

Post by Enail on Mon Jan 04, 2016 2:10 pm

I don't do resolutions per se, but my regular life rhythm does tend work out so that New Year's is right about the time big, busy-making things wrap up and I have a little time to breath and reassess. So in practice, I often land up deciding on big questions or sorting out things I've been wanting to do, and becoming ready to get started on whatever new things I need to get started on right around resolution time. So it kind of works out to the same thing Wink

So this year I'm going to:

-practice short meditation daily
-draw more
-figure out how clear some mental space on a regular basis to work on bigger projects. This one's way too vague to work as a real resolution, but it's something I need to do regardless and damnit, I'm not doing resolutions anyway! Razz
-be better about getting in touch with friends

I was also thinking about using Habitica (used to be Habit RPG, which I found super-buggy, but now seems to work better for me) to track/motivate me. Apparently if you form a party with other people, you can fight monsters together, is anyone interested in making a party and trying that?

I don't know if I'd call it a resolution, per se, but one thing I really want to do in 2016 is take the social justice-y thoughts I've had since some time after viewing DNL Prime (some of which I've shared here, on Prime or on other message boards and social media sites) and do some good with them in meatspace.

Not sure yet what form that good is going to take, and not sure when exactly in this year I'm finally going to do it, but there's got to be a way of doing it, right?

Those seem like pretty good resolutions, OP!

Kinda like Enail, I don't usually do resolutions, but the timing works out so that the breathing room between semesters is as good a time as any to reflect on changes I'd like to make. All I'm aiming for this year: stop being so actively mean to my body and maybe even be kind of nice to it. Like, stop feeding it so much garbage, stop taking out all my stress on it, start making time to use my legs and arms, maybe start running again. (Also probably going to try a tai chi class, which I think is an idea I got from you, OP). At the very least, start taking long walks, because it feels great and does wonders for my headspace. Make time at least once a week to do my favorite 6-mile trail with my dog.

(I'd join your Habitica party, Enail!)

Woo! I've set up an account and am busily putting tasks in!

Werel (and anyone else who wants to join our party), let me know your ID or else start the party yourself and invite me when you're set up! My user ID is: 9b270949-3320-45d5-a816-b587ea0ccb12

Fair warning, not that I think it matters to the party success, most of my tasks will be kind of miniscule, because that's where my life's at right now.

My resolution this year is 1366 x 768, and this laptop is relatively new, so I don't feel the need to amend that.

In all seriousness, to write not just more, but faster too. There's a feeling that all the ideas I have are already written down better by somebody else, and I dub this writer's cockblock. But there's lots of useless writing in the world, so that shouldn't really matter.

Also, to search out turns of phrase before I type them out to see if they haven't been done already, and if so, whether or not I can use it better (writer's cockblock turned up some press-Enter-to-make-poetic coffeeshop slam piece, so I don't feel that guilty).

This year, for the first time ever, my resolutions are completely about looks. They are:
-Keep my hair long/grow it longer.
-Go to the gym every day.
-Diet/lose the baby weight.

Awesome to see others resolutions! Thank you for sharing.

I tend not set resolutions as I rarely stick to them, but this last year has had some major changes to my life and since I seem to be having some success with goals I had laid out previously. Therefore I figured why not go for broke?

I hope not only do others stick to theirs as they best see fit, but choose to share some of their progress. At least for me it can be inspiring seeing other cool people kick ass and take names, metaphorically of course.  Wink

I need to get back into writing as well, I'm not good at it.. but ya know what? So what! I was terribad at many things until I was not. Another goal of mine is to not be afraid of the hard work that is sometimes required when learning a new skill. Besides epic fails can make for humorous stories at social gatherings.

Good Luck with getting past your writers cockblock, Buzzbased. I hope you choose to share some of your writing insights with the rest of us at some point. It helps the newbs among us learn!  cheers

Werel: I'm excited you might check out Tai Chi. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. I also need to eat better, oh why must junk food be so easy to obtain and tasty! I have noticed that exercise, such as going for a walk, does wonders for my mental state. Those endorphins and hormones be strong yo.

Am a noob myself, but what works for me is a truckload of drafts in which I dump links and turns of phrase until there is enough body for a decent blog. So far this has only happened one time and I want a certain order in things so I adhere to my own standards (i.e., the annoyances in online arguments must come first so that none of the annoyances pop up as arguments in the rest), but so far it's greatly pleasing to see how everything's starting to interlock with each other.

I am going to:

1. Clean my goddamned desk - seriously, it looks like a paper bomb went off
2. Not completely break down from stress as the current refugee crisis looks to only get worse
3. Do more yoga, lots more yoga

My resolutions!

1. Conquer a fear (even if it's a small one)
2. Stay consistent with my health plan re: diet and activity levels
3. Get rid of things I no longer need around the house
4. Try to improve my makeup skills (esp. find a foundation)
5. Try to spend more time with friends, socializing
6. Apologize less, thank more. Do neither when neither are needed and feel ok about that too.

My resolutions:

1. Keep going to pilates weekly.
2. Get my A1c (which I've completely said f-it about after hypervigilance to get the go-ahead to conceive, trying to conceive, being pregnant, and to a lesser extent, milk production) back under 7.0.
3. Get back to showering every day instead of every other day.

Everything else is vague, though no less valued to me, like: Make sure my baby is happy, healthy, strong, learning, growing, and knows she's loved.

Wondering

Maybe it sort of undermines the purpose of having "resolutions" to stick to, but I've been signed up with a trainer for the last few months so going to the gym at least twice weekly is no longer really a choice. For those who have the means, motive, and opportunity to divert a few hundred dollars that way each month, I'd recommend it.

(Going a third day each week to catch up on whatever was missed the other two days is something I'm still considering as an optional semi-commitment that nobody is going to hold me to, so maybe that counts.)

I also have to get through at least one season of at least one Battlestar: Galactica, if only to learn what the big deal is.

Re: What's your new years resolutions?

Post by Hirundo Bos on Wed Jan 13, 2016 1:12 pm

I have a mental list of three things I want to work on in 2016... the first two were on my list for 2015 too, but I've done a lot of progress on one, been delayed by external circumstances on the other.

  1. (After progress in 2015) Keep improving my dating life by 1) asking people out when I feel a spark, and 2) meeting more people in contexts where there might be sparks.
  2. (after getting in just this side of New Year's) Be optimisic and open to suggestions in the work program I'm in now, be willing to test my current limits.
  3. (then the new one, and maybe the main one) Work on a thing I haven't quite defined yet, but it has to do with how I spend my time... with finding a balance between procrastination and productive time, with finding a balance between following and shaking up my habits, because habits and procrastination time is necessary to give my brain time to process stuff, but too much makes my days into a blur that feels kind of pleasant but pointless. It's also messing with my sleep patterns, because I procrastinate the most in the evenings when it's time for bed. So, figure out what this is about, find ways to deal with it that doesn't take too much mental energy in themselves, practice those ways.

Those are my resolutions... and I might take a look at that self-reward game, see if I can fit my own kind of complex reward systems into it...

I'm loving it, actually. I was figuring I'd do a post to shill it after I've been using it a bit longer, but since you asked:

The other one I tried, Chore Wars, didn't really do much to motivate me. It levelled you up, but there wasn't much actual benefit to the levels, so it didn't give me that "must get reward" videogame feeling. I only really stuck with it as long as my original willpower kept me on the tasks. Habitica, the levels help you fight and eventually give you skills in-game, which is much more satisfying.

And similarly, the gold you got for fighting in Chore Wars didn't have an in-game effect, you just used it as a tracker for when to reward yourself IRL while Habitica lets you use it to buy in-game beneficial equipment that you can see in your avatar and your stats (or you can use it for RL rewards, or both if you prefer. RL rewards aren't something that works very well for me) It rewards you with extra gold for continuous streaks, and also values tasks you've been putting off more highly, which so far has made sense in how I use it. It feels much more addictive and motivating to me.

It's been a while since I used Chore Wars, so it's possible it's added more functions, but when I used it, it was much less multipurpose than Habitica, which lets you break down big tasks into checklists and lets you set up must-do daily (etc) tasks, "reward/punish every time you do it" habits, and To-Do list items as well. I'm also finding it very motivating having a party to fight with - I've caught myself from skipping daily tasks with a "no, I mustn't let Werel down!"  Laughing We'd love a few more party members for our next quest!

Chore Wars seemed to be designed more around shared tasks for a group, such as chores divided between roommates, rather than individual goals, and I suspect its set-up might be more motivating for that kind of task, resting on friendly competition for rewards chosen by the whole group. But if you're focused on your own habits, I'd definitely give my vote to Habitica. IIRC, they're both pretty easy to get set up, so you could also start out by trying both and see which you like better. I think there are also a few others out there that might be smartphone-only.

Oh, I've also got a neat new water bottle with 8 rubber bands on it (Roy G. Bi...pv). When you finish drinking a bottle and refill it, you can move a rubber band into one of its slots. You're supposed to aim for 4-6 full bottles per day. So far I think my record is like... three. And that's kinda rare. Cold weather in the winter and too much air conditioning at work in the summer makes it hard for me to feel thirsty at all through the day, but that's not the best excuse for something that's probably responsible for most of the relatively few health problems I seem to still have. So... again, this kinda started a few months ago, but I'm still struggling to form good habits around this and so I continue to work on it.
