Dorohedoro 2
What the fuck is this anime?
- Spoiler:
- The rain is just runoff from the sorceror's magical experiments and it's harmful to humans because it still has magic in it
- Scrubbing the body bags so the faces are clear
- A talking trash bag that wants to die
- Ebisu's face is just cotton bandages because Caiman bit it off
- Can't figure out how to zip her up
- I was wondering why that guy had the face on the back, he prefers wearing his mask backwards
- That's a monstrous amazon
- She threw forks
- Kicked his fucking eyeball out
What the fuck is this anime?

Continuing 1. Black Clover
C2. My Hero Academia
C3. Gegege no Kitaro (re-added, still have to catch up on a few episodes)
1. Re: Zero Shin (for at least another episode or two, people insist there's crazy plot twists or something)
2. Magia Record Madoka Gaiden
3. Pet
4. Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (I could see myself dropping this too, but I love the '90s JRPG aesthetic)
5. Bofuri: I Don't Want To Get Hurt So I'll Max Out My Defense

7. Dorohedoro

Re: Zero Episode 4
Holy fucking shit, that turned around o_o
Holy fucking shit, that turned around o_o
- Spoiler:
The maids teaching him how to read and write and peel and he's grateful for it, but then Ram kills the shit out of him and suddenly he's super fucked up. He cares for these people but they're killing him and he's afraid that the next time he won't wake up because he only went through three the first time around. He's still afraid of dying and still dies in brutally painful ways that they never gloss over. He finally survives only to find out Ram dies instead (wtf is happening) and that it's not the twins who are the enemy, freaks out and escapes, tries to moralize surviving selfishly just for himself, finally gives up because he does care about the people in the mansion, and jumps off a cliff to kill himself and go back to saving everyone.
God damn. That freaky-ass bullshit where time froze and he was attacked by something for trying to explain what was happening to him. The world-building too with the Dragon, the Witch and his possible connection to the Witch.

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Oh, shit, does that mean I should go back to it?
Also, you only had a list of 10 and you didn't even fill that!? Is it even possible??
Dorohedoro E1 -what the fuck did I just watch? The setting was cool and there's something I really like about the location art, but the character designs are ugly and weird in an unappealing way, and I don't find the characters particularly engaging, and the action had more gruesomeness than actual excitement, so I'm pretty eh on it for the most part.
Somali to Mori no Kamisama E1 - This one's gentle and cute, and I like the magical forest feel, but it also doesn't seem like there's going to be that much going on.

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Episode 3 of re:Zero is really slow but Episode 4 starts filling in more of the setting and starts taking advantage of what his power can accomplish in the setting. I'd say try it again but if episode 4 doesn't do anything for you, it's probably never going to do anything.

Okay, I'm not particularly sold on any of the other ones I've watched besides Pet, so I'll keep giving re:Zero a try till I get to 4 and decide then.

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Pet E3
- Spoiler:
-I was weirdly surprised that the guy with the baseball bat wasn't on rollerblades
-yikes, using mind-controlling to get a random customer to dump her boyfriend on a whim, Hiroki was supposed to be the sympathetic one!
-it's interesting how each person always takes on the same form when they drop into a memory, wonder if it says something about their peak
-Every child/childhood memory we've seen seems to land up getting into some horrible, violent mother that's kind of weirdly sexualized. Plus, so far there's no female characters and the majority of random walk-on women are basically just boobs/vagina (possibly a talking one ), I'm beginning to suspect it's not just the characters that have mother issues or woman issues.
-the girl kicking her dead mother. How is this is in the mafia enforcer guy's memory, unless he's the kid and this is telling us he's trans? I feel like they'd probably be clearer about it if that was the case, and also the first scene we saw the girl in, I thought it was current time and she was Zhou's kid or something, not a memory, so unless I was confused there (which, chances are pretty high, honestly), that doesn't work either.
-Little Tsukasa teaching little Hiroki about the mind stuff (and possibly proposed swapping hairstyles )
-Collecting valleys to hide your peak in??? That's different from what we heard before, aren't valleys supposed to be kept just as secret as peaks?
-at least he feels guilty for having mind-controlled the woman. And kind of freaked out, was it somewhat accidental, then?
-people can themselves project different people onto figures in their own memories to make them what they need them to be to survive
-I guess I was wrong about the kid being in the present, and Inui is trans? Or maybe he wasn't being shown as a girl but just that his mother made him wear girls' clothes, or I just read it as intended to be more feminine than it was actually meant to be? I'm pretty confused here.
-Okay, so now he's been made to think the Zhou guy is both his mother and the man that called him a thief so he'll kill him? And the make-up like his mother wore is a sign his mind's been fucked with? Honestly, this is confusing enough without them changing his hairstyle from scene to scene!
-Hiroki's desperate happiness when Tsukasa comes back, based on the way he mind-controlled that customer and then seemed so upset by it, I'm thinking maybe he never fully learned to control his powers on his own or something and he relies on Tsukasa to keep it in check?
-Oh, this is where the Pet thing comes in. The combo of Tsukasa completely dismissing Hiroki's ability to do things on his own and "I'd do anything for him" seems pretty fucked up, I had thought Tsukasa was possibly meant to be the most sympathetic one, but I think it might just be one of those shows where no one is fully sympathetic.
This one somehow managed to be both slower and way more confusing. Hopefully I just spaced out on something and it's not meant to be this confusing.

Re:Zero 3
Ugh.
Ugh.
- Spoiler:
This was all so incredibly lazy and stock. Not only do Subaru's constant lampshading comments about how it's like a generic dating sim not do anything to help the fact that every moment that's not about the resetting premise (which got like 2 minutes total) is an exceptionally generic, paint-by-numbers dating sim where nothing happens, they've run the joke into the ground so much that it's obnoxious. It just kind of highlights how the cliche emotional points are so automatic that it doesn't matter how unconvincingly or dislikeably any of them act; as long as they pick the right dialogue option at the expected time, the default relationship development happens regardless of whatever they do the rest of the time. It feels like the writers have so much contempt for the idea that characters need to have actual personalities or anything that feels like a spark of life, that they don't even try to make the people in the story act like it's real - which means if you try to suspend disbelief and care about the characters in spite of their lifelessness, most of them come off as unpleasant and annoying. They only work as familiar tropes, not as standalone characters.
I think having the main character be self-aware about being in a dating sim-like world only works in a straight-up comedy or if you actually deconstruct the tropes and play up the interaction between expectations and what complex, genuine people would really be like in that situation. You can't make it fresh just by pointing out it's stale.
Whatever big turn-around next episode does is going to have to be pretty incredible to make it worth sitting through what it seems like everything that's not tightly premise-focused is going to be like. I like time loop stories well enough that that is possible, but it's going to be hard for them to sell at this point.

Oh shit, I somehow missed Pet's 3rd and 4th episodes coming out.
And yeah. Re:Zero Ep 3 almost had me quitting. I do think Ep 4 redeemed some of the groundwork they did lay in that episode.

Dorohedoro 3
- Spoiler:
Caiman had his head levered off by a hammer, but he regrew a new head and then carried the old one around with him until they decided to dissect it.
This all happened during the Hole's "Day of the Dead", an annual event where the magic of the sorcerors gets a little powerful and resurrects all the dead as zombies. They hold a festival/competition to kill the shit out of and purify zombies all night, and they collect iron plates hidden in the zombie bodies and can exchange them for prizes.
Also the big bad so far just acquired a hovercycle that also functions as an electric broom
The fuck is this anime and I love it

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Pet 3
- Spoiler:
- Dragged aluminum bats are one of my favourite sound effects now
- Is it just me or do they sound like Japanese people speaking Chinese? It's kind of weird if I can pick up accents for languages I don't speak
- Using the coin flip as a focus to break up her relationship because he's mad that his boyfriend is doing jobs :nono:
- And he changed her senses so that she sees him looking and sounding meaner than he actually is
- Maybe the second most interesting thing about this show, besides the actual mind-fucking, is watching the regular scenes and wondering if someone's just been mindfucked or not
- Used his waving hat and the sound of the drink being spilled
- The bat in his childhood where he's forced to be a girl.
- Is he kicking her to make sure his mother's dead?
- Getting a bat from a man, his happiest moment
- Collecting other people's valleys to hide his peak. And they can't create their own memories because they're too flooded with other people's emotions?
- And now orange-hair feels guilty because of his mindfuckery
- Oh and he's pretending it's the random guy he saw playing baseball with his son that one day
- Hiroki's the pet
Inui was made to wear girls clothes as a child, he's been a man the entire time. As far as I understood it, Inui's peak of receiving a bat from a father playing baseball with his son was replaced by the yakuza boss somehow reminding him of his mother, and the valley of him being threatened by the dad with the bat for stealing the ball no longer took a tone of him wishing it was his dad but of him realizing this kind of person was his enemy. His hair was long and he was wearing makeup because he was now fine with being a woman like his mother wished (she was his peak now), and then Zhou implying that Inui stole his ball triggered him to kill the shit out of his "enemy."

Apparently the mangaka is a woman

I saw there were already a bunch of episodes of Kuutei Dragons and was just like "I'd never catch up with that" and took it off the list. At least I know my limits?

Re: Zero Shin 05
It's still a slower pace but more interesting, and the hour-long episodes might be better because it they seem to leave off at better parts.
Maybe I'm just getting stockholm syndrome'd into it.

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Pet 04
- Spoiler:
- More Satoru origin story? He still seems to be generally unresponsive to things as a young child (and it looks like he's getting recruited young too)
- So any of these kids with powers get called "Pet"
- Deliveryman sees a hikkikimori watching anime, I bet that's not what's actually happening
- Using delivery guys to pass along information
- Damn, laying down Katsuragi's pattern and telling him stfu to let him handle it instead
- Three days of gaming is even too much for Satoru
- I love the little distractions they use to catch people off guard so they can hypnotize them. Hayashi dropping his bowl.
- He made the delivery man forget about Katsuragi's change because Katsuragi is stringy
- Hiroki might've wanted to open a store because his ability to block out other's feelings is a bit weak and he probably took on that guy's interests from the first/second episode
- Hiroki doesn't know they're being spied on
- Heyyyy, more mommy issues
- "Mr Matasa", the same keyword that Satoru used
- Chinese lookout
- And they've obviously been screwed with, she's trying to feed pizza to a doll

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Pet E4
- Spoiler:
-the grandmother's memory suddenly changing from good son to waving a knife was clumsy, previous changes seemed more skilled and subtle
-ohhh, it's b/c it's Katsuragi doing it, I like that you can tell different people's technique!
-I mostly like the way they dole out info as they go, but I could use a little more info about the pet thing, Satoru's still mostly a mystery, but the other pet we know, Hiroki, seems to have opinions and act based on them and everything but the others talk like pets don't really operate like full people. I'm assuming it's that b/c they're so sensitive to others' emotions, they actually can't function without their handler to keep it in check, but it'd be nice to get some confirmation or other explanation.
-using a random creeper comment on the maid to catch her attention so he can get into her head
-huh, deliveries do returnable bowls?
-Satoru's fine with mind-controlling to make sales
-the old lady with the scissors
-Hiroki can tell that he only wants to run the store b/c his emotions got entwined with Kenji's, but the feeling is still compelling for him.
-weak lock= faster at syncing but more emotionally disrupted by it
-Everyone's been separated from the person who shared their peak, sounds like peak-sharing creates some form of link and even emotional dependence. And Satoru's talking about Tsukasa like he's the same as he and Hiroki, so seems like it's a general thing for crushers, not just pets
-Satoru teaching Hiroki how to use the Company's lookouts secretly, and Hiroki doesn't even know about lookouts to begin with?
-evil moms again. And playing with dolls, another gender norm-related conflict, just with kid and parent positions switched from last episode, this is really getting uncomfortably much like the writer's issues are coming out all over the place
-using Katsuragi to store his usb drive secretly under the Company's nose
-shit, Hiroki told Tsukasa about the lookouts, he's going to figure out it's from Satoru
-how did anyone get Hiroki seeing things when no-one's here but Satoru who's surprised by it? It didn't seem like Tsukasa gave him a trigger word when they talked on the phone. The "just forget about the lookouts" bit could have been a hypnosis instruction, but it's not the kind of phrase that seems likely to be a pre-set trigger for more than that. Maybe Tsukasa's connection Hiroki's allows him to mess with his mind freely, without any touch or specific pre-set hypnosis? Or it's just a cue he's been messed with off-screen.
-feeding pizza to a doll, and there goes a butterfly. So whoever fucked with Hiroki also did the lookouts.
-the ED song is great

Re: Winter Anime 2020
Re:Zero 4
- Spoiler:
-at least he's somewhat investigating.
-still, even now that he's trying to figure it out, instead of, say, trying to get as much info as possible from Beatrice as the one person who knows anything, asks her one relevant question, nothing whatsoever about what she knows about the time repeats or anything else that happened, and spent most of his time with her pissing her off/teasing her. It's like even the characters barely care about the actual plot except when it's actively grabbing them by the throat at that very moment, the rest of the time it's not even in the top 5 of their thoughts.
-oh good, he's actually done at least some preparation
-yay, Rem/Ram (didn't bother learning which is which) is the attacker! At last, someone has a point in the story! (hope this isn't a fakeout!)
-killing him b/c he seems suspicious and maid's law is to punish him, wtf, they better have some explanation that makes that less dumb
-the amount of interactions he's had with the maids really didn't feel like enough for him to care this much about whether they liked him, in all the repetitions, he had like one real conversation total with one of them. And there were, what, three repetitions of four days each, so ~2 weeks total and he's going on like he spent years working hard and learning from them. Even when he's just spilling out all his feelings about the whole time-skip situation to her, which is plausible to be mega-upset about, since they haven't shown a realistic emotional build-up to it throughout the storyline it just feels as random as all the other reactions. This show just turns on the dramatic emotions whenever it thinks there should be some, without having laid the groundwork to earn them.
-It does work how upset he is at the new restart, though
-and the freaky timestop hands of evil coming for him when he tries to tell anyone, we're actually getting some stuff that really feels scary and emotional and compelling (also, it's nice for a character to actually have a reason to not tell someone instead of just not saying anything b/c the writers want more drama and pointless misunderstandings)
-I'm getting so sick of Beatrice's -kashira after every sentence
-trying to jump off the cliff to end it, not knowing if he'd reset again or die, but can't take the step, this bit was a little cool
-"they held my hands once to comfort me, they must be wonderful people even though one murdered me," aand we're back to the sudden emotional back-and-forths, terror and desperation, wait, suddenly I found my courage and I'm cool and flippant, tormented, dramatic emotional declarations of deep love to people he's had a casual-acquaintanceship level of interaction with for two weeks followed by a murder, courageous self-sacrifice to inspiring music, sure, why not, characters are just dolls with test-marketed images and catchphrases who spout an emotion when you pull their string, stories are just slamming the dolls together and declaring kiss kiss now they're in love, all emotions are just chemicals shooting around our brains, nothing matters.
I had a teeeeeeny bit of hope after the last reset halfway through where there was some excitement and he was briefly showing consistent and convincing emotions for what was happening, but nope. I can't deal with these soulless character and almost unbelievable inability to tell a coherent or remotely convincing story on the emotional level, no premise is good enough to make that watchable and even when they do something right I don't trust they'll keep it up long enough to matter. I'm out.

I know what you mean, you'd think life just stops at high school graduation or maaaybe college. Pet I think is probably adults? The main characters are young-ish, but I'd say early 20s, not in school. Mind-fuck mindcontrol, don't know if that's your thing.
